If, like me, you're done with the wet and cold, particularly the muddy dog walks, here's a reminder (& some advice for photographing in the summer) that we did actually have some really lovely hot weather last year - Spring and Summer are not far away now. Here's some photos of a family shoot I took in the heatwave, remember that?! Photographing in boiling weather is not without its challenges! Elsa & Freddie (1st photo) were unphased by the heat as they live in Australia & I was commissioned by their grandmother to photograph their cherished visit. Hard to remember the heat we had then, but here's some advice after many years of photographing in steamy Charleston SC, where I photographed many lovely families. This was before I had my children and globetrotting for work had to be put on hold. All change now again as both boys at uni, so feel free to ask me to globetrot again! My tips: ☀️Photograph in early morning or evening. ☀️Find pretty, shady spots. ☀️Use hats, they are fun & frame faces. The Emmy’s tonight has me thinking about storytelling. I lived and worked in LA for years. My eye was educated in the film business. I brought that discipline with me when I became a full time photographer. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When my photos really work, they are stories without words. A story in a single frame. I actually don’t even know I’m doing it. For years, I watched as directors and directors of photography would enter an ordinary room and make it interesting. A TEAR…SHEET. You tear a page out of a magazine. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Them: Oh. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ [So I showed some of my collected pages and I got this follow up:] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Them: Wow, so you photographed Jerry Seinfeld’s family? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Me: No. Annie Leibovitz photographed them for Vogue and I TORE IT out as an inspiration photo. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Them: Oh… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s as simple as it sounds: a sheet torn from a magazine, a newspaper, a book - a piece of inspiration you want to keep for yourself. I’ve got boxes of tearsheets in my office. I’m from a pre-Pinterest world and although I use Pinterest and love it, I prefer my box of collected tears. I like holding them and arranging them on a table. It gets in my head the way digital just doesn’t. If we’ve ever had a session together, you might see me bring a handful with me. The way Rachel orchestrates everything is phenomenal, she’s there - but she’s not there. On the occasion of welcoming Lucy, @dougvaug newest canine addition to his family, I dug these out of my archive. One of my first jobs as a paid photographer and to this day one of my favorites. All film. All black and white. This was back in the day where I photographed the job, dropped film at the lab and went to dinner. Those were the days!!! 🎞 Maybe at my most creative - I was willing to try everything. Really going for it and embracing imperfections and lucky accidents. Loving the totally blurry one. Weimaraner’s are sometimes called Grey Ghosts and I thought this image really expressed that. All about a feeling. 🎞 The square image - I originally thought it was a fail but then I fell in love with it. That’s not a fake filter. 120mm film and the camera flares are real. You can see the film info through emulsion in the image. 🎞 The one shot through the other dogs legs? Just unafraid to experiment.
