Moment #10: First Student Budget Consultation As Student Vote was transitioning to CIVIX, the main objective was to design new programming to foster democratic engagement between elections. The first new program was the Student Budget Consultation. Every year, governments consult with advisors, stakeholders, and citizens about their needs and priorities in a process called pre-budget consultations. To us at CIVIX, it was obvious that one key voice was missing: youth. Young people were not just future voters but future taxpayers as well, and they too would be affected by the budget. CIVIX decided to give these youth an opportunity to make their voices heard. In March 2012, we launched a pilot version of our Student Budget Consultation program. An interactive website was designed with video tutorials featuring Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan discussing the province's expenditures, revenues, debt and deficit. The website also included an interview with economist Don Drummond, who explained his recommendations for working towards a balanced budget and their relevance to Ontario youth. The Finance critics for the Ontario PC and NDP – Peter Shurman and Michael Prue, respectively – also shared their party’s views. After the learning activities, students completed an online survey to test their knowledge of the budget process and to discover what steps they think Ontario should take to meet its stated goal of a balanced budget by the 2017-2018 fiscal year. In total, 1,367 students participated in the pilot project, and the results were presented to the Government of Ontario. All in all, students agreed that the government should be cutting expenditures, and they emphasized the importance of investing in health care. These results were then shared with then provincial Finance Minister Dwight Duncan for his consideration. CIVIX decided to expand the program the following year, and in 2013 ran its first federal Student Budget Consultation. The program has run annually ever since, with tens of thousands of young Canadians from coast to coast- providing their feedback on federal government spending directly to decision-makers. #CIVIX20

These activities aim to minimize landfill waste and promote sustainable reuse of construction materials. The facility required District and Regional Consents from the Waikato District and Regional Councils for land use and stormwater discharges. The landfill operates in two stages, with permissions secured for the next 13 years, extendable upon expiry. Strict environmental controls, including waste acceptance criteria and monitoring, are in place to manage impacts on the environment. Comprehensive management plans and consent conditions reinforce environmental goals. Since 2021, Green Gorilla has improved operations and environmental performance, earning support from local community groups and iwi.
