Lo sguardo sognante di Papà Carlo e Sebastian, probabilmente dopo una dormita di 12 ore consecutive, è uguale. Senza considerare alcuni tratti caratteriali che pare di rivedere noi stessi nella versione in miniatura. Aiutoooo! Tipo Sebastian e Papà Carlo che con 37 di febbre, con voce mesta e solenne recitano le ultime volontà. O Julian e Papà Christian che cascasse il mondo, tutte le sere alle 21:30 cadono in un sonno profondo anche se si trovano nel mezzo di un Carnevale di Rio. Effettivamente c’è un fondamento scientifico in questa somiglianza. I nostri figli condividono metà del corredino genetico dalla stessa donatrice di ovuli, mentre il restante 50% proviene da ciascuno dei due loro due papà. Ma questa informazione, utile solo a riempire dei moduli ospedalieri in caso di bisogno, non ha nulla a che vedere con l’essere genitore. In un paese che vive l’ossessione del legame biologico come unico termometro per valutare le capacità genitoriali ci piace ricordare che essere padri e madri è soprattutto una scelta. Scelta di esserci ogni giorno, anche dopo un’estenuante giornata di lavoro quando ti ritrovi a leggere la favola dei tre porcellini, intonando un OINK OINK ogni tre parole. Scelta di amarli più di te stesso, anche se ti ritrovi a dormire cinque notti di fila sul divano perché “papà il lettone è più comodo del lettino”. Scelta di costruirgli il miglior futuro possibile, anche se la società ti presenta un conto salato da pagare perché la tua famiglia è diversa dalle altre. La qualità di un legame non si misura da piccole cellule filamentose di DNA che combaciano. I nostri figli non sono un’etichetta DOP da preservare per la conservazione della specie. Before I picked up an Apple Watch for health reasons, I used to wear Swatch. I own lots of them — something I have been collecting since ~1991 (when I was ~15). My dad, who’s a marketing professor, introduced me to Swatch back in 1983 (when I was 7). I didn’t think a lot about it then. But the first thing I bought when I got my first paycheck playing piano for various ballet schools and ballet groups during the summer was a Swatch. From that day on, every time I worked on a new project or client, I would buy a Swatch as a reward or marker to note the completion of something. When I was younger, I would remember the complete project that I worked on just by looking at a watch. Besides as pointers to projects, the Swatch collection additionally serves an important function — they go with specific outfits that I wear. I sometimes would buy a new Swatch to match a new shirt. I know it sounds nuts but that’s why it’s handy that these Swatch does not cost a lot — #crazyisgood! Since 2012, when I eventually switched to a predominantly black (or dark palette), the colorful Swatch served as the accent to my wardrobe. I tried to buy them in my brand colors — cyan, yellow, magenta, and black, aka CYMK. These days, because of health reasons, I had to monitor my heart and other parameters, so I have switched to an Apple Watch. The Swatch collection is still in their protective cases. I haven’t put in new batteries for them for ages. They used to be really loud and I need to put them behind double-layered shelves. It’s not that noticeable when you only have one, but it’s very noticeable when you have as many as I do. Vivian Stringer. • Determined to see these remarkable women get the recognition they deserved, I spoke with a Hall of Fame representative, Josh Sullivan, about the nomination process. This set in motion a five-year journey to ensure that these pioneers were rightfully acknowledged. • After years of persistent advocacy, I’m overjoyed to witness the incredible women of Cheyney State take their place among the greats. Leiden ist ein mächtiges Wort, dessen Bedeutung und Kraft wir oft unterschätzen. Es ist eine Empfindung, die oft behinderten Menschen zugeschrieben wird. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass sie unter ihrer Behinderung leiden, unglücklicher sind und das Leben für weniger lebenswert hält. In Berichten oder Medien liest man auch oft: „XY leidet an der Diagnose.“ Statt „XY hat die Diagnose“. Sprache beeinflusst unser Denken mehr als man denkt. 2 Sätze und zwei unterschiedliche Bedeutungen mit Wirkung. Dabei möchte ich keinesfalls sagen, dass es nur an diesem Satz liegt, dass behinderten Menschen „Leid“ zugesprochen wird. Wir wachsen mit der Sprache auf, nutzen Floskeln, die wir hören und hinterfragen nicht immer die Macht der Sprache. Denn, dass wir von Leiden ausgehen, führt dazu, dass ich von fremden Menschen für meine Behinderung bemitleidet werde. Erfahren sie, dass ich mehr als eine Diagnose habe, folgt auf „Das tut mir leid“ noch ein „Oh, das auch noch!“ Mein Leben ist jedoch nicht schlechter, weniger Wert oder leidvoller als das Leben von nicht-behinderten Menschen. Dabei möchte ich nicht sagen, dass behinderte Menschen nicht leiden. Tatsächlich leide ich unter Diskriminierung und auch den ein oder anderen Tag unter Schmerzen. Aber diese Bewertung steht nur mir zu. Den Leid ist ein (seelischer) Schmerz, den keine Außenstehende Person bewerten oder fühlen kann. Dass wir aber direkt von Leiden ausgehen, schafft ein Bild über Behinderung und eine Bewertung, die uns nicht zusteht. Auch, wenn jede Person das Recht hat zu sagen, dass sie unter einer Diagnose leidet. Wie oft geht man bei Menschen mit Behinderung und Depressionen davon aus, dass das „Leid“ der Behinderung der Auslöser sei. Oder wird in Filmen das „tragische Schicksal“ gezeigt, dessen Erlösung nur der Freitod ist. In der NS-Zeit ging man sogar davon aus, dass es besser wäre, Menschen zu ermorden, die eine Behinderung hatten. Ein sogenannter „guter Tod“ (Euthanasie). Man rechtfertigte die Morde mit der Erlösung der Menschen. Kein Denken, das es noch nicht vorher gab und kein Denken, das es heute nicht mehr gibt. Wir erinnern uns an Potsdam 2021, wo eine Pflegekraft behinderte Menschen ermordete. !B

You really are starting from scratch every day after a brain injury and these are only a few of my daily struggles. Other things I struggled with included using the phone, walking for long periods, cooking, mixing, talking to people in person, social gatherings, inability to watch TV, inability to use a computer, bathing, brushing my teeth, sitting on the ground, vertigo, light, sound, reading, and writing....the list goes on and on and felt never-ending. Luckily, the list has shrunk over the years and I have been given a second chance in many ways. I found it difficult when people couldn't understand why I was absent from parties and events. That was a goal for many people around me, but as you can see, a person with a brain injury has to start at square one and their goals are different. Your goal might be on their long-term goal list and everything they are doing to heal may connect to your goal in the future. I couldn't attend a party when I struggled to peel an egg, peeling those eggs would eventually help my eyes coordinate and lead to reading, which would open a world where I could communicate with others. Every injury is so different and I hope these images reduce comparisons.
