Once you've found one black mk1 gti left to rot in someone's front yard, you don't expect to find another. Yet here we are. Nearly a year after a found a very poorly looking example of what many consider to be the the original hot hatch in an unassuming Cardiff bay cul-de-sac, I stumble on a similar scene across the Severn in bath. Whereas my Cardiff spot was the result of furious Google streetview searching, however, this pocket rocket was found completely by chance, making it all the more of a spectacle when I laid my eyes upon it for the first time. Well, it's not joined by an equally forlorn corrado, it's not buried in 6 inches of unkept grass and its original stripes are nowhere to be seen, but it still took me back to find such a desirable example of what the volkswagen audi group does best when they really put their minds to it. There's nothing I haven't already said about the mk1 golf gti which makes this caption a difficult write. I could easily go off on a tangent about it's various mot gremlins as there's plenty of them but I'm sure plenty of you will have made a bee line to reg check the moment you memorised the plate. I will commend it's mileage, however, as 173k must be bloody good going for what was essentially the automotive equivalent of a firework display. Exciting but disposable. This old git has been enjoying a much deserved retirement for 6 years now although it's difficult to know if it can still be found doing the rounds or not due to its mot exempt status, the open bonnet may suggest an eventual resurrection regardless. I can see the exemption tool get taken full advantage of to keep what is far from the most pristine golf on the road for as long as possible. Bollocks to corrosion, what the dvla doesn't know won't hurt them. That's about all I've got for this one. Are the photos a bit crap thanks to my phone dying almost the moment I found it? Naturally.
