DESCRIPTION: Bright green culms sometimes develop characteristic internodal swelling when subject to high summer heat. Grows to about 25-30 ft. Cold hardy to 18 degrees. Makes an interesting subject for bonsai. Shoots are quite edible. Will survive with less than ideal conditions. Known for being relatively drought tolerant and salt tolerant, so will do OK in ocean environments and desert climates with warm winters. Grows shorter in arid climates and colder winters. May be grown indoors with bright light or a full day of sun. Causes of the formation of โbelliesโ is somewhat of a mystery. Factors seems to be high summer heat and moderate water deprivation, coupled with space constrictions. Pot-bound plants seem to do it more, while plants in the open ground often make very few bellies. One can try to force them in a potted plant by giving a measured amount of water, just enough to trickle out the bottom a little, and then giving the same amount of water only after the leaves begin to fold (wilt) a little.
