Due to the flowering we’re able to offer Chusquea culeou 'Caña Prieta' in 1 and 2 gallon sizes, much smaller and easier to transport than our standard 5 gallon bamboo. The ones we've planted in the ground at the nursery and in our own landscape at home have gained 1-2 feet of height per year. Our fully loaded truck with 30-35' timber bamboos on the other side... to a property in San Francisco. They were unloaded and then brought through the house to the back patio where they were artfully arranged and installed in a very narrow barrier. We also had to install a wire system to keep them upright within the tight space. One of the clumpers we currently have 𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞 is 𝘉𝘢𝘮𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘢 𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘴𝘢 “Buddha’s Belly” (BVE). DESCRIPTION: Bright green culms sometimes develop characteristic internodal swelling when subject to high summer heat. Grows to about 25-30 ft. Cold hardy to 18 degrees. Makes an interesting subject for bonsai. Shoots are quite edible. Will survive with less than ideal conditions. Known for being relatively drought tolerant and salt tolerant, so will do OK in ocean environments and desert climates with warm winters. Grows shorter in arid climates and colder winters. May be grown indoors with bright light or a full day of sun. Causes of the formation of “bellies” is somewhat of a mystery. Factors seems to be high summer heat and moderate water deprivation, coupled with space constrictions. Pot-bound plants seem to do it more, while plants in the open ground often make very few bellies. One can try to force them in a potted plant by giving a measured amount of water, just enough to trickle out the bottom a little, and then giving the same amount of water only after the leaves begin to fold (wilt) a little.
