Peperpot, located in Commewijne on the right bank of the Suriname River opposite @visitparamaribo, is one of the oldest plantations in Suriname. It was established in 1692, shortly after a man named Simon van Halewijn came to Suriname. The plantation started cultivating tobacco. However, this was not a success and they switched to cocoa in 1702 which didn't last either. Around 1720, Peperpot switched to coffee and managed to remain in production until 1998. In 2010, the original plantation house and surrounding properties were sold to an entrepreneur who developed it into the popular boutique @hotelpeperpot. The old coffee factory right opposite the main building has a different owner. The huge Commewijne river was full of river dolphins which Brazilians call „botos”. Sadly they were too fast so it was difficult to capture them on a photo - I took dozens of them and this was the best one (but obviously not a good one).
Walking around Nieuw Amsterdam village. The buildings on the last two photos house a small history museum. The most interesting part concerned each group of immigrants which inhabited the village in the past (Hindustani, Indonesian, Chinese, etc.).
A Chinese monument in Nieuw Amsterdam. I don’t remember its purpose, but it attracted my attention as I’m always eager to find out about Chinese presence in far away places.
