In the following excerpt from our recent podcast discussion, Ayya Yeshe discusses how vipassana meditation is not a kind of panacea which magically solves all of life’s problems, but rather something which must be applied to inform our ongoing interactions with the outside world. “People are drowning in the complications of modern life, and they're pursuing their own desires. As the Buddha said, ‘This generation is entangled in a tangle.’ They're overwhelmed by their own suffering; so, they don't have the mental space or time to comprehend something that's not right in front of them. But someone who goes deeper into their practice, sees the web of inter-being: Where do my clothes come from? Where does my food come from? Who went before me to advocate so that I would have the vote as a woman? So that I would have universal health care? So that the poor would have a minimum wage or an unemployment benefit or a single parent benefit? Or social housing? Or a limit of work hours per week? As time goes on, a lot of these things are kind of going backwards, in terms of human rights. We need to see the web that we that we exist in, and how others’ oppression sometimes leads to our comfort. To be more conscious in how we're living, more simple in how we're living, to redirect our resources so that there is a more even distribution of resources to care for the planet and to care for each other. I do believe we could make a difference. Imagine if everybody stopped buying things from unethical corporations. Imagine if governments divested from fossil fuels. Imagine if we stopped investing in finance companies that are selling arms, and so forth. It's just about awareness. Sometimes that awareness is lacking, because people are self-absorbed, and they can't see themselves in the greater whole; they can't see themselves in the bigger picture. One would hope that spiritual practice would make you more aware of your sacred relationship with all of life. But unfortunately, some people tend to use spiritual practice as a place to hide rather than as a place to grow and to open up..."

When the bullets fly, the doctors are there. When the Third Wave of COVID hit, underground medical volunteers risked their lives, to save lives. Whenever protesters fear an imminent clash with security forces, nurses set up emergency medical tents to care for the casualties coming. Doctors have played an integral part in this resistance movement. The White Coats Strike on the part of medical professionals has been credited at launching the Civil Disobedience Movement, and their courage and sacrifice has continued to stand out. But how do things look from the doctors' point of view? For this, we were treated to an extensive conversation with Dr. Troy, who details his involvement from the first days of the movement. “At what point do we send someone to the hospital? That decision alone is extremely scary, because we don't know what the hospital is going to look like, and we don't know what they'll do. And then you're sort of public, and you're also exposed to what's happening around you, and seeing dead bodies, which is what people were telling us we would experience.” Michaela describes the nightmare situation in Myanmar, with people having to face "Coup-vid" this year, a hellish combination between the Third Wave of COVID, and the ongoing humanitarian crisis that is the military takeover. No quote more than this one illustrates the impossible decisions that people are now faced with there. When Michaela and her roommate came down with COVID, they have to choose between self-recovery at home with very little medical care available, or going to the hospital and having little idea what could be in store. Some patients worsen by going to Burmese hospitals, where the risk of infection can be compounded and military authorities may swoop in to take a closer look at those seeking care. One consistent remark that several recent guests have made on the podcast is noting the quality of resilience among Burmese people, and this year has tested that trait like no other time. It is hard to imagine another people enduring the burden of suffering that their military has heaped on them, as they continue to fight for their democracy and human rights. I just looked through 'Insight Myanmar' page and read some articles, listened to some podcasts. I'm just writing to share know my thoughts about what have been happening within my mind these days and somewhat that my family encountered and found out over the period of Kāyika Dhukkha (bodily sufferings). When my wife and I were first touched, we got distressed and depressed quite often. Our thoughts were running away and we were so emotional. We often lost our emotions and easily shed tears whatever someone talked to us, or whatever we talked, and whenever we spoke about something. I especially felt depressed. This was because we had no medical consultants at that time (couldn't think of and find any medical doctor to consult with), we couldn't buy sufficient supplements and vitamins as required, we even didn't know what medicine we should take, and the worst was to know about the scarce oxygen (both cylinders and gas). Every items of medicine got more expensive than previous and ever. The prices of oxygen cylinders got increased and it was scarce to find or get a cylinder even when we decided to buy one at last. We even didn't know where to get a cylinder and fill it with gas after running out. (Here, thanks to my eldest brother who lives in Monywa and who has been away from home, and his friends who carried a cylinder and searched medicine around the city for my father.) Especially, when I was sick, I couldn't get even a single cylinder when I was hard of breathing. One morning that I was having breath problem, a call from my niece rang my phone nearby and my mom picked it up to answer.

Part 1: Urgent COVID relief needed A devastating third wave of the coronavirus in Myanmar is causing thousands of preventable deaths. Driven by a contagious new variant, a lack of hospital beds and essential medical supplies, daily new positive cases and deaths have reached catastrophic levels. A serious shortage of oxygen in particular is a problem. Family members of covid patients have to queue for hours to buy oxygen or refill oxygen tanks, and sometimes their loved ones die in the meantime. And the inherent challenges with the country’s medical infrastructure are being exacerbated by the military junta; for example, doctors are being detained simply because they are helping civilians. On July 23rd, 2021, Myanmar recorded 6701 new positive cases (38% test positivity rate), and 319 deaths, and 1,300 dead bodies were waiting to be cremated at cemeteries in Yangon alone. The 7-day average of new positive cases is officially 5,600. Due to limited testing capacity, the actual number of people infected and dying from covid is estimated to be 10 times higher than official government statistics. Please join our efforts to save lives in Myanmar. As part of our relief efforts, we will now be purchasing and shipping Canta oxygen concentrators. The oxygen concentrators have been tested to work well, and meet the quality standards of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia. Along with the concentrators, we will be purchasing other essential equipment, such as oxygen flow meters, oxygen masks, nasal oxygen cannulas, and pulse oximeters. Backup generators to run the oxygen concentrators are also necessary as the electricity supply in Myanmar is very unreliable. Teams of underground volunteer-physicians in Myanmar are prioritizing the needs of patients and delivering care accordingly. Our goal is to help save as many lives in Myanmar as possible. By donating to this fundraiser, you can help us save lives. We have a plan to move this lifesaving equipment into Myanmar within 2-3 weeks. Part 1: Urgent COVID relief needed A devastating third wave of the coronavirus in Myanmar is causing thousands of preventable deaths. Driven by a contagious new variant, a lack of hospital beds and essential medical supplies, daily new positive cases and deaths have reached catastrophic levels. A serious shortage of oxygen in particular is a problem. Family members of covid patients have to queue for hours to buy oxygen or refill oxygen tanks, and sometimes their loved ones die in the meantime. And the inherent challenges with the country’s medical infrastructure are being exacerbated by the military junta; for example, doctors are being detained simply because they are helping civilians. On July 23rd, 2021, Myanmar recorded 6701 new positive cases (38% test positivity rate), and 319 deaths, and 1,300 dead bodies were waiting to be cremated at cemeteries in Yangon alone. The 7-day average of new positive cases is officially 5,600. Due to limited testing capacity, the actual number of people infected and dying from covid is estimated to be 10 times higher than official government statistics. The oxygen concentrators have been tested to work well, and meet the quality standards of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia. Along with the concentrators, we will be purchasing other essential equipment, such as oxygen flow meters, oxygen masks, nasal oxygen cannulas, and pulse oximeters. Backup generators to run the oxygen concentrators are also necessary as the electricity supply in Myanmar is very unreliable. Teams of underground volunteer-physicians in Myanmar are prioritizing the needs of patients and delivering care accordingly. Our goal is to help save as many lives in Myanmar as possible.
