May the Bambarayon flow with you and guide your path 🌾🎉🙏🏻 Here's another tangkong revival design that we're working on to the cap the year off ^_^ John Alman was probably the first to document this particular tangkong pattern that's found in the interior of Sabah. In his article 'Dusun Brasswork' published in 1963, he described the tedious process of traditional brass casting using the 'lost-wax' method. Even by that time, he noted that our traditional dress had already become less popular in the last 15 years and that our metal craft was a "dwindling trade". "A finished ring is generally sold for twenty cents (Straits). The Dusun women thread about sixty-five rings on a length of rattan to string around their waist. As they wear as many as seven strings, the weight is considerable" . Thankfully, he managed to track down a brass caster, Lanog, whose village lay somewhere between Kiulu and Ranau. His valuable documentation, along with this physical artifact (the ring on the right) we acquired from our friend Jacob, guided much of the design of this tangkong cuff. The specimen we have in hand looks to be an alloy of copper , zinc, and silver. The bevels were carefully carved and the ring itself is much smaller than the other tangkong specimens we have. 🔍 Alman also provided sketches and noted the name of this pattern : "Senolutan". We have no idea what it means and have not found other sources yet to confirm the name. 🤔 Our reinterpretation of the senolutan pattern is beveled by hammering a brass rod on an angle and then carefully chiseling in the details. Further shaping was done with a fine file and then polished. Dusun comb / surud study. The piece above is a study of Albert Grubauer's collection during his expedition to Mount Kinabalu here in the early 1900s. There are so many in his collection of different shape and sizes - styling however is distinctively of Dusun make. We first knew about traditional combs after reading John Whitehead's 'Exploration to Mount Kina Balu, North Borneo', that was published in 1893 : "The women use bamboo or wooden hair-combs made by their lovers or husbands, and this is their only toilet article". We suspect that this is the reason for the diverse and unique comb shapes. Perhaps an individual's expression of his love for a particular girl. Much can be read about a person in the care and delicateness of his or her craft. Whitehead has the earliest account of the artefact that we have knowledge of so far. At first, we thought that maybe his one illustration was just an isolated artefact; that perhaps it was not a significant enough object (maybe even foreign) to our community since even Sabah Museum did not have one on display. No one in my family had ever talked about these combs as well. Thankfully, with Grubauers collection, archive data and a surviving artefact we found from Kampung Pinatau, it gave us the confidence to say that these combs are definately a part of our heritage. Wood carving seems to be a rare feature in most Dusunic work these days. While we have come across a lot about them in other journals (ceremonial boat carvings, weapon ornamentation, wooden statues, carved boxes, carved wooden panels, hairpins, grave fences etc) they were mostly in writing and with little illustrations. This piece was a good study in form and technique. We had no idea how delicate and small the comb was until we scaled the photographs to size. We will get in touch with the recommended contacts and keep you updated on the fossil find ^_^ Here is a lovely excerpt related to fossils from the book 'The Religion of Tempasuk Dusuns of North Borneo', 1953, written by anthropologist/ ethnologist/ archaeologist, Ivor Hugh Evans: "Nearly all natives make use of charms, and many will not go on a journey without taking some with them as a protection against any perils which they may encounter. Any object of unusual shape, or one which is at all uncommon, is regarded as a charm. Among those which I have seen in use are quartz crystals, shiny black river pebbles, curiously shaped pieces of wood, rhinoceros teeth, fossil shells, and ancient stone implements. Belts of cloth or string network are frequently made to contain such charms as the owner may wish to wear on his person, and each of these is sewn or netted into a small compartment separate from the others. Stone implements are, among the Dusuns, chiefly used as charms to keep their padi in good condition. We were looking around for people to build pedestals for us because of time constraints and were quoted rm280 per pedestal (unpainted). We didn't have that kind of budget so we had to build them ourselves. Study of a traditional Dusun home. Depending on the dialect, they're called Lamin, Hamin, Walai or Baloi. House building was a community effort and the Dangol/Parang was the chief construction tool. Wasoi (adze/ axes) were also used to fell trees. Before the introduction of iron nails, only rattan cords, hardwood pegs and joinery were used to put everything together. The main frames were typically made out of wood or bamboo. Poring (Gigantochloa Levis) is favoured because it is the biggest and strongest bamboo in #Sabah. A whole house can be made with just this bamboo. River boulders were also utilised as building foundations. In #Tambunan, it was tradition to place skulls beneath the foundations of a new house to protect the home from diseases and attacks. The roofs or 'Taap' in coastal areas were made from Nipah leaves. Rumbia (Sago) was usually used in the interior. #Bamboo slats were used in most parts of Tambunan. Walls and floors were either made of wooden planks, bark or flattened bamboo. These homes were always raised so that the interior floors were free from the ground in case of flooding. The space underneath may be used as storage space or to keep livestock. This arrangement also kept the livestock safe from theft. In the past, our villages consisted of longhouses that offered better security and protection. Whole villages may consist of 2-3 of these longhouses. Tuhawon inspired Sabaat prototype v2. The sabaat backpacks of Tambunan area were used during special occasions like weddings to bring dowries. Unlike baraits (visit @sangtukangschool for reference) which had a rectangular base, these have a much narrower base with only two corners. They were made from mostly rattan and had embroidered cloth stitched around the opening. The piece featured here is a contemporary hybrid of the saabat backpack and patterns found on Tuhawon sunhats. Tuhawon art style is distinct from neighbouring Liwan, and Kwijau tribes in that our woven work tend to feature bold black lines againts rattan/bamboo colour and use plenty of red accents. We're practicing with these polypropelyne plastic strips first before we work on a rattan replica. The antiques we've seen are so much finer and delicate. It's such a joy to weave and to continue on a traditional skill. Tuhawon-inspired Sabaat prototype showcasing a contemporary fusion of the saabat structure and the zig-zag pattern found on Tuhawon(Tambunan) sunhats. This unique backpack, traditionally used for special occasions like weddings, features a narrower base with two corners and is made from rattan with embroidered cloth stitched around the opening. The Tuhawon art style stands out with bold black lines against the natural color of rattan/bamboo and vibrant red accents. We are currently practicing with polypropylene plastic strips before crafting a rattan replica. Tangkong cuff prototype 2. First time working with granules to replicate the look of tangkong belt rings ^_^ Traditionally, kelulut beeswax were used to model the tangkongs. Various tools made from bamboo or animal bone were then used to carefully decorate the surface with lines and raised dots. With the experiment above, small pieces of brass were melted into balls and then fused onto the cuff. Elephant/Godingan cuff - a tribute to Borneo Pygmy Elephants. These will be available today at 12pm via www.saltxpaper.com/collections/sang-tukang ^_^ The species is currently endangered due to habitat loss and human-elephant conflicts. They are found nowhere else outside the island of Borneo. According to lore, Ibans who found themselves in Sabah would later tattoo elephant motifs on the sides of their torso to mark their journey. It is pretty interesting that there are no elephants found in Sarawak territory. Some believe that these elephants couldn't travel further south of the island because of the dense forest and hard belian wood. While there are stories that a sultan of Sulu long ago in the 17th century brought many elephants to Sabah, genetic studies suggests that the Bornean elephant has been on the island 11,000-18,000 years ago when the major islands of Sundaland (Borneo, Java and Sumatra) were connected . This piece, adorned with two meteorite beads, draws inspiration from our traditional creation story. According to our lore, the world was once entirely covered by water. Rangawan, the supreme deity in the Dusun pantheon, then sent down a massive rock. From this monumental rock emerged two beings. Kinorohingan, the male entity and a skilled smith, fashioned the sky. His wife, Suminundu, used her weaver's sword to shape the earth. Once the world became habitable, they proceeded to create all other living beings. The oral history, known as Rinait, comprises recitations of countless verses that have been passed down through generations by our spiritual guides, the Bobolian. In one such Rinait, it is mentioned that the great rock originated from the first sun created by Rangawan. This sun eventually fragmented into numerous rocks, one of which was then dispatched to the earth. Thank you Jacob for these beautiful meteorite beads! This piece features a central diamond-shaped copper with a 'Seed' motif and radiating arrows carved on a brass cuff. We call this piece 'Seed of Life', inspired by our traditional belief of a life force called Bambarayon. This motif can be found on our crafts especially on our sunhats. According to lore, we brought our favourite seeds, especially paddy, to farm wherever we settled. Depending on the area or who you ask, the dots represents seeds and the diamond shapes represent containers. They may also represent a plantation; the grid form of a paddy field for example. We've often asked ourselves, why are these designs passed down and what of their importance? After discussing with some elders during our travels, we have come to a conclusion that it is a form of reminder and respect for nature ; as nature is a source of life. In the context of the paddy seed and Dusunic beliefs, rice symbolises the Bambarayon which is a traditional concept for kind of life force or an energy that flows through nature. In some kampungs, they may also represent patterns found within banana trees. It is said that cutting a small wedge in a banana tree invites prosperity into the home. Mountain & Stars, Decorated with Copper Rivets: The motif showcased on this piece captures the essence of a mountainous valley adorned with stars. The central zig-zag motif represents a river, flanked by majestic mountains. It evokes the sensation of viewing a valley from a high vantage point, like looking through a fisheye lens ^_^ The stars on this piece are accentuated with copper rivets, adding a captivating touch. Additionally, the borders of the motif feature a pattern inspired by the "siling," which are the trimmings found on Tangara (Kadazan) garments. These intricately interwoven triangles, arranged closely together, are not only decorative but also serve as a way to terminate or segment different designs. This style of termination is reminiscent of our heritage textiles and wooden carvings. The main design is followed by zig-zagged mountain range motifs that extend to the edge of the piece, completing the overall composition. Mountain Range. Nuluhon. This copper cuff is inspired by the zig-zagged motifs, also known as kininilong or kinilong, that are found on our beadwork, carvings and weavings. They represent the mountain ranges and valleys in which we inhabit. This style is most prevalent in Tambunan art. According to Bobolian lore, the gender of copper alloys can be determined by the sound it makes when struck. High pitched sound means that it is a 'tambaga tondu' or 'female copper'. A lower dull sound with less ringing means a 'male copper'. Unlike brass which is an alloy of copper and zinc, copper is a reddish pure metal that can be found in nature. Sabah has a lot of minerals like Chalcopyrite in which copper can be extracted. In fact, we had the only copper mine here in Mamut, Ranau back in the 70s - 90s. This bell cuff, is a contemporary take on a traditional design. The bells were previously tied to brass cuffs with strings or wires. They are called Giring-giring in the Dusun language and are also known as Kadazan bells,or lunsing kadazan. These stylised brass bells actually originated in China where they are known as "Tiger Bells". We decided to keep this design as an homage to the heritage and the hundreds of years Borneo has been trading with them. Brass bells were considered an amulet and children were given bells to wear to ward off evil spirits. According to lore, if an evil spirit or a bunian saw one wearing it, it meant that the person has an "owner" and cannot be taken to the spirit realm. This belief perhaps has its roots during a time when headhunting, pirate attacks and slave trade was rampant in this region - bells might have been used as a kind of alarm or deterrent. Interestingly, the Chinese word for Tiger, 'hoo', sounds similar to the word for "protection" which might have also led the belief. Bells were also sewn onto garments and worn to make a pleasing sound during dances. Men also sometimes tied bells onto their swords, perhaps a mark of bravery in combat or to instill fear in their enemies. The bells we have found in Sabah so far have come from China and also from Phillipines-specifically from the T'boli people. There are also some made from silver american coins that were probably made locally by Bruneians or Irranuns that we found at the tamu. We have not found hard evidence of Dusun made bells yet but there are some interesting antique artifacts we acquired.
