Memphis dazzled me before I ever got there. Certain cities have an allure I can’t explain. Once I visit them, I’m usually even more enamored. It might have a little to do with setting out to have a good time then doing exactly that. It might have a lot to do with the instincts that draw me to places that are for me—places I’m meant to be. Memphis was one of them. I suspected it before I got there, but this city welcomed me with warmth, excitement, surprise, and all-around kindness. Beale Street brought all the feels I’d hoped it would. An evening spent strolling under neon lights and invisible stars. A Cinderella carriage ride home to my hotel. A classic blues soundtrack followed me everywhere. Cajun cooking fed my soul. This is a rare designation in my book, but I’m calling Memphis a two-night minimum destination. When I return, I’ll do my best to spend no less than two precious nights.

I wonder what the South would be like if there had never been a Civil War and if Civil Rights never had to be fought for. Jackson, Mississippi, for one, would be unrecognizable. My time in this capital city will stick with me forever—I learned so much. After touring several plantations in Louisiana days before, Jackson was the fast-forward to the modern-day aftermath that made everything click in my mind.
