Peep the wooden panel under the sofa. That’s the side of my new walking pad. It takes less than a minute to put it into place under my sit/stand adjustable desk and easily rolls under the sofa for quick storage. Getting in steps while working has never been easier! The scale of furniture in a room is an important detail in ensuring the final look is proportional and balanced. Too large and your room can feel overwhelmed, too small and it can be uncomfortable and sparse. This is one of the many valuable insights @theinteriordesigninstitute taught me. And once you understand this, it becomes obvious in every space you enter. For this office on a budget, these @target chairs were considered a “splurge”. The size and scale of the Vernon Barrel Accent Chairs were perfect for this room and the curved shape added visual interest. But it was the fabric that made me swoon. The light brown velvet introduced a softness that was much needed in a room with textured walls and ceiling, and the color plays off of the shades in the area rug beautifully. 😍 Leave it to @studiomcgee to design a beautiful piece at a great price point for their Target collection. #interiordesign #officedesign #officedecor #designonabudget #designbymarisa
One of the many valuable lessons I learned through @theinteriordesigninstitute was to incorporate textures to add visual interest to a space. Looking back, it seems like a no-brainer, but it really was one of those aha moments for me in my training. Having moved to a State where textured walls are everywhere - inside and out - I’ve been looking at texture through a new lens. I’d love to bring some high gloss, reflective, smooth surfaces to this space. It would balance, the rough textured walls quite nicely. I managed to sneak in a mirror, and a glass door bookshelf. But due to budget constraints, I couldn’t bring in as many smooth surfaces as I would’ve liked. Having said that, I’m in love with how the textures I did bring into the space are working together. It truly does create visual interest and creates a cozy atmosphere in a room. Save vs. Splurge. When clients have a tight budget I still recommend putting out the money for quality items that you want to have last. Everyone’s response to that is different, depending on their season of life, their priorities, where they envision themselves in a decade, their total budget… For us, the dining room table was the priority. I wanted a quality, extendable table that would last. When this one entered my search at 50% off you know I jumped at the opportunity! What's one thing that you invested in that was a disappointment? I'll go first. This sofa from West Elm was a major disappointment. It didn't hold up well, the cushions lost their shape and the fabric was not nearly as durable as we expected. We thought we made a good investment, but boy were we wrong. A space should reflect those who live there. It should feel like you, not some Pinterest image you copied. One simple way to achieve this is to include items that speak to you in your home decor. This book about fashion and style over the years is one of my favourite coffee table books. I displayed it in my living room on an acrylic stand and every so often I'd flip through it and leave it open to a new page. Each time I passed it, I'd smile to myself because the book brings my little heart joy. The electrical panel was an eyesore in this space, so we hid it behind a panel and painted it the wall colour to disguise it a bit. The top shelf above the washing machine provides the perfect spot to tuck away the router and modem, while the lower shelf houses practical items like detergent and fabric softener sheets. I was so excited to get this laundry room finished that I completely forgot to shoot footage for a before/after video! My husband cut a custom counter top to provide a bit of surface area in this laundry room. We used upper cabinetry as lower cabinetry since they're only 15" deep, and the room wasn't spacious enough for traditional 24" lower cupboards. We finished this laundry room just in time to list our house. It's a smaller space, so we utilized stacked upper cabinetry to create loads of pantry storage without taking up too much space. And the pocket door entry with frosted glass allows light to transfer and helps the room feel open and spacious. Using shallow upper cabinetry to create a wall of storage is a simple way to maximize storage space in a small room like we did in this laundry room / pantry. Instead of traditional 24” deep lower cabinets, we used 15” deep uppers and added a custom counter top to provide a small work surface. I enrolled in Interior Design School in the middle of a global pandemic and did much of my studies in my bedroom - the only place I could get a little privacy. 😉 I graduated @theinteriordesigninstitute (you can hear more about that on my YouTube channel linked in my profile), launched my business, and dove into our basement home renovation. All while continuing to work full time. I’m currently not taking any new design clients as our family prepares to embark on an adventure. Marisa Anderson Design is working with its first co-op student this summer! They’re learning everything from a design brief with a client, creating a mood board, sourcing products, purchasing, working with subcontractors, working with trades, staging a room, and managing a budget. By far, the largest project I've ever been involved in so far was this amazing warehouse turned church. The amazing architects, contractors, trades and labourers brought this massive space together and I was thrilled to be a part of it. It’s been 11 months since I started my business and launched this account to act as a portfolio of sorts. The people I have met on this app have delighted and amazed me! More frequently than ever someone new asks where my design studio is located or if they can come see my studio and meet me at my office. Let me introduce the office! A small corner of our basement that houses a small library of design samples and materials, and in place of a spacious worktop to spread things out on, I’ve gone vertical. I have three small shelves that allow me to see the samples together, without using all of my desktop space. When I’m building out a concept I use a large acrylic tray to contain the various options I’m going between to prevent the whole space from being overtaken. The winners stay on the shelf. If I have more rooms to work on, once I’m pleased with the selections, I put (most) of them in a clear bin, labelled with the project name. This allows me to free up one of the shelves AND when I need to work on a specific project again, I can easily grab the project bin and pick up where I left off. So that’s the design studio, guys. 😊 And I quite like it! A former client texted me this picture to show me how the gallery wall is coming along and I was struck by how amazing this living room photographs. It’s a rental unit and we worked together to thrift almost the entire thing. 😍 This client is the Facebook Marketplace queen! We started by creating mood boards to set the tone. Armed with those, she scoured the internet to find the pieces that spoke to her while also creating the relaxed, boho-chic vibe she loves.
