I’m officially a Public Affairs Officer in the United States Navy Reserve! 🇺🇸 ⚓️ 📷 🎤 I’m so grateful to have attended 9 weeks of training at the Defense Information School (DINFOS) in Fort Meade where I met incredible people who I hope to serve with again one day 🤍 I am also proud to announce that even while working my civilian job on top of this demanding course, I graduated with honors from the Public Affairs Communication and Strategy Qualification Course🌟 (last pic is the secret to how I did it 😂) If you would have told little MIDN James her career would end up here, I never would have believed it. After over 7 years as an Active Duty Nurse Corps Officer, I transferred to the reserves in August of 2022. I always thought I would do a 20 year Nurse Corps career so leaving active duty was truly the hardest decision of my life. I was even more terrified to take the leap to PAO, but WOW - I am so glad I did! It was A LOT of changes all at once but God worked it all for good 🙏🏻 If you are feeling called to make a change in your life, just know that you always have skills & passions that can be further explored. Life is too short to spend it doing anything that doesn’t fill your cup and challenge you in the best ways! In October, I embarked on a transformative journey, enrolling in the Defense Information School Public Affairs & Communication Strategy Qualification Course (DINFOS PACS-Q) in Fort Meade MD. This course was not just an educational experience but a career transition for me, marking the end of my era as a ‘CBRN nerd’ and the beginning of my new path as a ‘Paao nerd.’ The course was intense and challenging, especially during the initial weeks, demanding quick adaptation and resilience. It brought together a diverse group of individuals, including civilians, active duty personnel from across the Department of Defense. As the course progressed, I immersed myself in the world of public affairs and communication strategies, a stark but exciting contrast to my background as a CBRN guy. The final week of the course was particularly significant. Receiving my certificate signified not just the completion of a rigorous ten-week program but also the culmination of my transition into a new professional realm. Throughout this journey, I developed meaningful connections with my classmates, each of us sharing and learning from our unique backgrounds. My mom attended the Defense Information School Public Affairs & Communication Strategy Qualification Course this summer in Baltimore, MD. Aka DINFOS PACS-Q. This course brings together civilians and active duty from the “Department of Defense, U.S. government agencies, and selected foreign military professionals”. The course is a RIGOROUS ten weeks, and the intensity is palpable for the first four. I flew out for the last week to watch her accept her certificate! This was no small feat, and you could feel every graduate in the room heave a collective sigh of relief. I met so many of her classmates, and was zero percent surprised to hear from everyone how loved she was as a classmate and a friend. There are many not even pictured here. @aaguilar27 YOU DID IT. You made it happen. There’s the you before DINFOS (B.D), and she was great! But this is the Alicia A.D. and she is a FIERCE competitor with her PA skills honed and sharpened. A few of my snaps from another successful Valley Veterans Ride for Heroes. I’ve now been a member of VFW Post 7814 Thomas-Fields in Staunton for a year, and boy has it been busy. The VFW slogan is “No one does more for veterans,” and that is so true. It’s very humbling as a younger vet to volunteer my time for these events and organizations - to meet, converse and raise money. “Unexpected friendships are the best ones.” I started my day so sad and lonely (and a touch angry) and ended it feeling so exhausted but still laughing so hard I was crying. What’s unique is how the people responsible for my cry-laughter are people I’ve only known for seven weeks. I am aware of how fortunate I am to have people who don’t mind my company, who I can talk to easily, who make me laugh, who I can be unguarded around. Its not easy to find and completely unexpected to find from a group of individuals tossed together. But I don’t believe in coincidences. It’s not like we will be best friends (or maybe we will 🥰) but these people are so appreciated, even if our connections are brief. HIGH ROAD DOES TAKING THE HIGH ROAD MAKE A BETTER PERSON? I feel like being petty gets a bad rep. As humans, we have a lot of emotion and most of it remains pent up if not directed towards the issue at hand. As a result, people convince themselves that shutting down and never speaking up for themselves is the same as being the better person. It stems from a fear of confrontation which is something I struggle with personally. The stronger the emotion, the further back into my heart it goes. It’s the fear of being disliked due to telling people how you feel about a situation or a person. We fail to realize that this just leaves us with regret and guilt in our ledger when things eventually fall apart. The show Lucifer had an interesting perspective on the matter. Hell is not a place to atone for sins, it’s a place made only of your own guilt, forcing you to live out your greatest shames over and over again for eternity. For all the reasons I thought I would go to hell, it’s terrifying to think that the reason would be for clinging to false security induced by an adolescent trauma defense that I’ve aged past, but never outgrew. A meticulous Hell, forged and crafted by nothing further than my own soul. Mass Communication Foundations (MCF) - Visual Documentation students practice uncontrolled action photography in a series of simulated combat scenarios. The exercise is one of several conducted throughout the course to give them experience with fast-paced photography in a moving and dynamic environment.
