There's some debate about how valid our earliest childhood memories are. And while I'm no sensationalist, I truly believe my earliest memory (and only valid one) from before I was 4 years of age was on our family's first trip to Walt Disney World when I was just shy of 3 years old. While 99% of the trip I could only recall through viewing family home movies, I had one true memory that I still see vividly in my mind today. But the odd thing? I don't remember what was going on around me. Whether we were waiting in line for a ride, to eat a bite of food or see the infamous Mouse & his Mrs. I haven't a clue. What I remember is brief. I was in a stroller, and I must have been taking a nap because #disneytired, when I sleepily looked up from my view in the reclined stroller & saw my mom's face smiling down at me as she stroked my face & whispered, "go back to sleep". My parents spent all that money for me to remember nothing about Disney except.... The love of family. I say all of this to say, whether your kids are too young to remember or too old to think it's cool, take the trip. And I don't mean the expensive trip to Disney or the Bahamas. I just mean the trip together. You'll work hard to pack everyone. You'll have to pre-plan potty breaks & you'll have to put your foot down with your teens to get off the device. You'll have to save and only get starbucks once a week. You'll have to breathe deeply & remember they're tired & over-stimulated. You'll have to fight the urge to say, "well they're too young to remember" or "they're too old to care" so why bother? Bother because a family adventuring together solidifies the bonds that hold you when your kids are grown and wrinkling themselves and popping out their own babies and wishing the time would slow down. You'll wake up one day & your kids will have flown the coop and the time will be gone. But maybe even if they don't remember the details they'll remember the way it felt to be loved & together.
