BLOG! When the subfloor was down, I moved onto the window trim. I really wanted drywall returns for some of the windows. A drywall return is a technique used in construction to finish the edge of a window opening where the drywall or plaster meets the window frame. Instead of using timber casings which are somewhat decorative, a drywall return is used to create a smooth and seamless transition between the two materials. Timber window trim costs more than drywall, but is easier to install and more durable, however, for a few of the windows, it's just not an option. The big window in our office is one example. It was meant to bridge the brick of the original house with the wood siding of the extension. Some designers believe that it is important to keep the integrity of the original house and create an extension that looks like it was there all along. Most of the time, I would agree, but this house wasn’t a stellar design to begin with. We were challenged to design an extension that was fresh and modern without it being too obvious where the old house stops and the new begins. Window sills!! 🤎 A couple weeks ago, after lots of searching, we scored this epic white oak long enough to span the huge window in the living room—worth the wait to find the right piece. Our friends John and Roscoe came over and planed it for us while Mike was on bed rest, and Jim and Tim installed all the sills throughout the house today (and did so with extreme care and attention to detail.) In my humble opinion, drywall returns around windows look best when covered with wallpaper. Although time consuming, this installation technique results in a streamlined finish that will wear better over time. The small window in this powder room is a perfect example - notice how the wallpaper print appears to flawlessly wrap the outside corners. This installation featured wallpaper by @farrowandball. ‘Tourbillon’ has an elegant Art Deco appeal that is full of dynamic energy. Warm beige segmented circles burst with movement across a matte black background. This modern print is available in nine different colours.

Getting the window returns ready for the tapers! We are cutting in a small groove where a corner bead will be inserted to give us a drywall return finish, but also have no mud on the top of the window trim incase any moisture happened to occur and potentially crack or lift the mud. This will much more durable than a typical drywall return since we have wood all around the window and the drywall/taping will all be done to the face of the window trim.
