Friends, I hesitate to say it aloud for fear I may jinx it, but our contractor installed the last panels today and…OUR KITCHEN IS DONE. 🙌🏽👏🏼🍾🥂😍 WHAT?!? After 10 months it really felt like it would be in-progress forever. 😳 I’m not sure if my contractor or I was more amazed it was over. Click through to see some before and mid-project pics. The tiled countertops and crumbling grout, the unreliable oven, the nearly broken microwave, the one remaining original stove knob, the insufficient track lighting…Oh.My. Tonight I’m celebrating by making a flourless chocolate cake to take to my in-laws for Passover tomorrow, and reveling in the fact I could bake it AND asparagus for dinner, at two temperatures, in this double oven, the smooth counter workspace well-illuminated by a variety of light sources. Amazing. The fireplace wall was brightened up with fresh paint on the brick and beams, a new operable fireplace unit was installed, and the same white oak/wallpaper featured in the pantry area continues through this space. The real star of this area for us are the 3” recessed lights above the dining table. This install was especially challenging when trying to lay out a pattern that didn’t interfere with the ceiling joists. The runway effect of this area set against the rest of the kitchen makes this spot very special. I present to you… “Stave”!!! I made this last semester in my cabinetry class at @tntechcraftcenter It is a liquor cabinet for your most unique liquors… whether it’s an old, antique bottle of whiskey, or just something special you’d like to keep away from others. There are shelves for your double old fashioned glasses (max 4) and you can fit up to 2-3 bottles of liquor on the left hand side. The pullout box can be used for bottle stoppers, or anything small that is used when making drinks! The inspiration for this cabinet came from the idea of coopered (curved) doors. Coopering is cutting a very slight angle and putting the pieces together to create a slight (or heavy) curve. When making barrels (for wine, whiskey, bourbon, etc.), the coopering process is used, and then banded with metal. Each piece of wood with the angles on either side are called staves. That’s how I got the idea to make my original cabinet a liquor one, and also how I named this piece (like Steve, but instead, Stave). I absolutely enjoyed making this cabinet, and learning so many new things! It was also my first time making anything out of white oak, and I love this wood because it’s so beautiful and it really compliments the idea of a modern liquor cabinet!!
