This is Britta born 1914, no 4 in the family in Åmål, Sweden. Se was only 16 when she lost her mom and felt she had to do something to conquer grief. In 1931 she bravely chose a career in food service management ( storhushåll). To plan for healthy nourishment is important in hospitals, schools, military and private sector. She tried them all before entering the Vocational school for home economics in Uppsala in 1938. After graduation she became an appreciated manager in a hospital in Soederhamn. In 1941 Britta continued in the Infantry regiment in Gotland, the strategic island off the southeastern coast of Sweden. One night she and her colleagues saw German warships heading north. With the war being fought on the other side of the Baltic sea, this was an unforgettable, scary moment. She worried about her grandfather's family and all her cousins who lived in Borgå close to the Russian border. Pic 2 Britta in military uniform visits Åmål. Here she salutes my mom and me on a bike in the family garden, 1941. After the war Britta moved to the Eksjoe regiment where the soldiers who had served from north to south gave her flowers and a letter dated November 1945 expressing their appreciation for her tasty, nourishing food (Pic 3 letter). Here she met her future husband, married and moved up north to Oestersund in 1948, now with a baby daughter. Britta was a professional through life. With seeming ease she also gave us food and fun in our frequent family reunions. Pic 4: Britta in the midst of sisters Karin, Anna-Lisa and Inga-Maja. My aunt Britta played her admirable part and is indeed remembered as the Lady of the family. Historically food service or catering reminds us of the Bible where Jesus fed 5000 people with two fish and five loaves of bread, to royal castles with servants and guests and to monasteries where pilgrims made stopovers.
