“Welcome home, son” The reenacting community really needs to get behind having more chill homefront style events. Being able to portray a “85 points man” demobilizing from the army in summer 1945 was awesome. My second first Mauser. How can that be? Long ago, I started collecting military surplus pieces. I had a Mauser, a Steyr-Kropatschek, a Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk.1, a mismatched Luger, and P.38. I ended up parting with all of these except the P.38 when I moved up north to start a career. Fast forward a few years and I decided that I should rebuilt (and expand) my collection. On this day in 1942, the Salinas Assembly Center was officially opened. Located at the Salinas Race Track and Fair Grounds, this site would reach a peak population of approximately 3,594 inmates. The site was composed of around 142 buildings that were constructed to house the inmates. Amongst those buildings were only 8 bathhouses that the whole population was forced to share. Complaints about the lack of resources and utilities were not rare at the Salinas Detention Facility. These complaints would be made known to the head of the camp, E. A. Rose, through the community government that the prisoners organized. April 27, 1944: Day 1 of Exercise Tiger, a rehearsal for D Day, took place at Slapton Sands in Devon, England. Over 400 Americans were killed in a friendly fire incident on the first day of the exercise. The beach at Slapton Sands was selected for its similarity to Utah Beach in Normandy. General Eisenhower wanted the men of the 4th Infantry Division to get used to artillery fire. He ordered a real naval bombardment of Slapford prior to the landing. He also ordered shore artillery to fire live rounds over the landing ships as they approached the beaches. The people of Slapford were evacuated for their safety prior to the op. Due to a delay caused by late landing craft, US General Don P Moon ordered the exercised pushed from 0730 to 0830. Unfortunately, most of the first wave and the shore batteries did not receive the radio message. The first wave headed for the beach at 0730. The second wave left at 0830, and ran smack into the artillery bombardment from the shore. The battery commander thought he was firing over the second wave, which would have been closer to the beach had it departed right after the first wave. 400-450 American Soldiers and Sailors were killed by thr friendly artillery. The Army immediately clamped down on the incident, threatening court martial for any Soldier who spoke about what happened. The casualties were later folded into the casualties on D Day, and details of Tiger were not released publicly until the 1970's. The trip across the border from Spain to Gibraltar was soooo worth it! This small territory is rich with history and there are plenty of activities to do. We parked in a lot on the Spanish side of the border and walked across to passport control. After a quick trip through customs (since Gibraltar is a British territory be sure to bring your passport) we took a quick public bus ride up the mountain to the bottom of the cable cars. We rode the cable car to the top to check out the views of the port, the Mediterranean Sea, and even across the Straight of Gibraltar to Tangiers, Africa! We hiked the trails to check out old WWII gun batteries, used to protect the straight from German ships and u-boats. Deb braved a suspension bridge, defying her fear of heights and we checked out some of the old WWII tunnels (hence the hard hats). We even got to walk through the remains of a ~14th century Moorish castle. Inside Saint Michael's cave, there were spectacular stalagmites, stalactites, and even a series of both that appear to have formed the shape of the Archangel Michael - see if you can spot it in the photo. And that doesn't even account for all the time we spent watching the apes play. Yes... We FINALLY got to see 🐒 🐒 on one of our trips 😃 These lovely animals deserve a post of their own, so we'll add those photos in a bit. HIGHLY recommend a trip to Gibraltar if you are coming to southern Spain. From Southampton Port all the way to Lyndhurst with our mascots (Wonky, Mauser, and Meadow the Fox in tow). Set off at 9.30, and reached our destination at about 3.30 this afternoon. We had a beautiful, eventful journey through the new forest, and along the way we got to speak to many many people who had connections with Girlguiding and wanted to know what we were up to. #EternalPatrol Honoring Frank Charles Pierard Frank Charles Pierard served with honor and distinction aboard the USS F-4 (SS-23) as a Chief Gunner's Mate during the formative years of submarine service. Tragically, on March 25, 1915, off the coast of Honolulu Harbor, F-4 sank during a routine training exercise. Frank's commitment to duty and sacrifice in the nascent days of submarine warfare will forever be remembered. Rest in peace, Chief Gunner's Mate Pierard. The Rhodesian armed forces: 1890s - 1980 ⬇️⬇️ __ This is for Educational and historical purposes only __ The Rhodesian Security Forces fought against the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA), and the Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) those rebels received weapons and equipment from the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries of the Warsaw Pact, during the 1970s. The conflict was fought alongside the South African Border War, and the Portuguese Colonial Wars (February 4th, 1961 to April 25th, 1974). __ During the Cold War and numerous proxy conflicts fought in Southwest and east Africa - during the 1970s the Rhodesian Security Forces (which consisted of the infantry, special forces, air force - and various personnel affiliated to the Rhodesian Ministry of Internal Affairs), despite the impact of United Nations-implemented economic and diplomatic sanctions, were able to develop and maintain a potent and professional military capability. __ The Rhodesian Air Force used Search & Destroy operations with helicopters bringing infantry, with air support of jets – against insurgency forces (from 1975) which used Mozambique, Zambia and Botswana as bases. __ The Rhodesian Security Forces of November 11th, 1964 to December 1979, had origins in the British South Africa Company which served the British colonial interests in Southern Africa, (today’s Botswana and Zambia), South Africa and Rhodesia. __ The armed forces were originally created during the administration of the British South Africa Company in Rhodesia in the 1890s into the early 20th to 1914, prior to the outbreak of the First World War in Europe on July 28th, 1914. #🇬🇧🇿🇦🇿🇼TheformercountryofRhodesiaItsLegacy #🇿🇼🇿🇦🇬🇧TakingTheGapSouthAfricaAndRhodesia ⬇️⬇️ @raven_military_historian

Russia, I love you 🇷🇺🥰 Россия, люблю тебя 🇷🇺 🥰 Since April 2024, the school at the Embassy of the 🇷🇺 Russian Federation in Berlin bears the name of the Hero of the USSR, Colonel General Nikolai Erastovich Bersarin (Николай Эрастович Берзарин). The school is also celebrating its 70th birthday this year. Even decades later, Berliners still remember Nikolai Bersarin as the head of the city with gratitude. As the first Soviet commander in Berlin after the end of the Second World War, Bersarin, among other things, supplied the population of Berlin with food and medicine, prevented the spread of epidemics, opened schools and kindergartens, organized the removal of rubble and the restoration of city buildings and technical communications and the transport infrastructure. By the end of the war on May 9, 1945, people in Berlin had been starving for weeks. Water supply was destroyed and people drank water from the Spree River, where everything was dumped and disposed of. And there was no electricity at all in Berlin. It is safe to say that without the Soviet troops and Colonel General Berzarin's organizational skills, the city would have simply died out and collapsed and there would have been no Berlin left. Nikolai Berzarin managed to unite all positive forces in a very short time. He gave people the opportunity to show their best side. This had an incredible impact on restoring peaceful life. Unfortunately, after just 54 days of commanding Berlin, Nikolai Berzarin died in a terrible traffic accident. After his tragic death in June 1945, he became one of the few persons who were honored in Berlin with the highest award, “Honorary Citizen of the City”.
