Mahalo to our intern Hāweoʻula from @nawahiokalaniopuu for creating this post on this significant day of Hoʻokāhuli Aupuni. ʻO kēia lā ka piha makahiki 131 o ka hoʻokahuli ʻia o Hawaiʻi. Ma kēia lā e hoʻomaopopo ai kākou i ka poʻe i paio no ke kūʻokoʻa a i kūpaʻa no ka pono o ka lāhui. E like hoʻi me kēia ʻōlelo kaulana a ka mōʻī wahine ʻo Liliʻuokalani, ka mōʻī hope i lula i ke aupuni o Hawaiʻi, “Never cease to act because you fear you might fail.” Eia mai nā hua mele no ke mele ʻo “Hawaiʻi Aloha” i haku ʻia e Makua Laiana (Lorenzo Lyons). E aloha Hawaiʻi kākou! #ALOHALAHUI #EMAUKEEA #HAWAIIMAU Today marks the 131st anniversary of the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian nation. On this day, we remember those that fought for independence and stood strong with the Hawaiian people. Just like the words of Queen Liliʻuokalani, the last ruler of the Hawaiian Kingdom, “Never cease to act because you fear you might fail.” Here are the lyrics to the song “Hawaiʻi Aloha” written by Makua Laiana (Lorenzo Lyons). E aloha Hawaiʻi kākou!

Celebrating Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea (Sovereignty Restoration Day)! On July 31, 1843, King Kamehameha III-Kauikeaouli established this as a national holiday celebrating the rightful return of sovereign government to Hawaiʻi by the United Kingdom, after an illegal seizure by one of their representatives. Kauikeaouli proclaimed, “Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono”, the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness. #lahoihoiea #emaukeea #07311843 #nationalholiday #hawaiiankingdom #hawaiianhistory

Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea, celebrated on July 31, is Sovereignty Restoration Day in Hawai‘i. It signifies a profound intersectional opportunity for climate and peace: restoration of sovereignty plays a critical role in truth-telling, resolving trauma, and rebalancing power and authority throughout the islands. Being an organization founded in Hawai‘i means we must be an active participant in the restoration and upholding of Native Hawaiian rights. By amplifying the narratives of Indigenous innovation, collaboration, and partnership, ICP strives to create a world where intersectional climate and peace values thrive, bringing about positive and transformative change for the wellbeing of all. The Institute for Climate and Peace pays tribute to the Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) who have persevered with courage for self-determination and justice in their own homeland. At ICP, we honor the survival and wisdom of Kānaka Maoli communities in reclaiming their ancestral lands, traditions, and culture, which will thrive for infinitely more generations. #lahoihoiea2023 #emaukeea

Sovereignty Restoration Day or Lā Ho’iho’i Eā was established as a Hawaiian Kingdom holiday in 1843, and re-established by Hawaiian patriot, Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell in 1985. This renewed observance of Lā Hoʻihoʻi Eā was cultivated into a unique space for independence dialogue and education on critical Hawaiian issues, serving as a platform to facilitate civil action. In recent years, the observance of Lā Hoʻi has expanded into a month-long celebration. LĀ HANA MA KANIAKAPŪPŪ (7/2, 9 AM-1 PM) In preparation for our lā hana at Kaniakapūpū, lets take a look at one of the most celebrated and well-attended Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea Celebrations! On July 31, 1847, on the fourth anniversary of Restoration Day, citizens from across the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi were invited to a pāʻina ʻaha aina at His Majesty King Kamehameha IIIʻs summer residence in Nuʻuanu, Kaniakapūpū. Subjects of all classes came to celebrate and remember the rightful restoration of Sovereignty to the Kingdom in 1843. Recollections of this celebration can be found in Ka Hoa, Volume V, Number XV, Page 117 on August 12, 1847, and Thrums Annual from 1930. “Many people came to the Summer palace to celebrate, by foot and by horseback. One man hired to count them, commenced early in the day and made out 3,600, going up and 4,600 down—another 1,637 following the King, and 362 straggling.” Nearly 10,000 people gathered to celebrate at the Summer Palace. A massive feast was prepared, and “271 hogs, 482 large calabashes of poi, 602 chickens, 3 oxen, 2 barrels salt pork, 2 of bread, 3,125 salt fish, 1,820 fresh do., 12 1-2 barrels luau and cabbage, 4 do. onions, 18 bunches bananas, 55 pine apples, 10 barrels potatoes, 55 ducks, 82 Turkeys, 2,245 coconuts, 4,000 heads of kalo, 180 squid, Grapes and other etcetera, sufficient to feast 12,000 people.” Kaniakapūpū has been a significant place in Hawaiian history, especially Ka Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea, and we hope to see you all there this Sunday to celebrate once more. E mau ana ke ea o ka lāhui Hawaiʻi! #emaukeea #lahoihoiea2023
