TWO TELESCOPES & ONLY ONE WILL WIN THE$1.6 BILLION IN FUNDING - WILL IT BE TMT OR GMT? - FreeHawaii.Info #AoleTMT #ProtectMaunaKea #KuKiaiMauna #FreeHawaii #HawaiianKingdom Science.org - February 28, 2024 U.S. astronomers will have to make do with one giant ground-based telescope rather than the desired two, the National Science Board (NSB) announced yesterday. Meeting last week, the panel of scientists that oversees the National Science Foundation (NSF) capped the budget of the U.S. Extremely Large Telescope Program (US-ELTP) at $1.6 billion, enough for a substantial share in one 30-meter class telescope. But US-ELTP represents the interests of two such projects—the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) in Chile and the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) in Hawaii—which are building components but not fully funded. The board has given NSF until May to come up with a process to choose the lucky winner.... So in 2018 the two projects joined forces as US-ELTP and made a joint offer to NSF: a share in both telescopes that would give U.S. astronomers two complementary giant instruments covering both hemispheres, something that Europe’s Extremely Large Telescope, rapidly taking shape in Chile, could not do. NSF carried out preliminary design reviews on both projects, which the agency approved in early 2023, but the estimated costs continued to balloon. Each telescope now has a price tag approaching $3 billion, which would make just one of them the costliest project NSF had ever undertaken. In an editorial in Science in November 2023, Turner argued that insisting that NSF fund two telescopes put both projects at risk. At its meeting on 22 February, NSB acknowledged the ambition and vision of the US-ELTP proposal but noted it would take up 80% of NSF’s funding for major projects. As NSB could not condone starving other fields, it set the $1.6 billion cap and tasked NSF with setting out a plan for choosing a telescope and its subsequent timeline by the board’s next meeting in May.

John De Fries has made clear his position regarding his support of the building of the Thirty Meter Telescope. Mauna Kea has been galvanizing for those who stand in protection of what is sacred. The movement to protect Mauna Kea has been important in bringing together those who want a new future for Hawai’i rather than the old paradigms and frameworks that are unsustainable. The building of any future telescopes on Mauna Kea is unsustainable and John De Fries, because of his support of astronomy and TMT, on sacred Mauna Kea is not the best choice for Executive Director to lead the Authority’s work. Let O’ahu be the Canary in the coal mine when it comes to making decisions that protect our future. Mauna Kea sits atop 5 aquifer systems that provide water throughout Hawaiʻi island. To date there has been no comprehensive hydrological study of the summits. It is important to put a water protector and advocate in the Executive Director position. There are so many qualified Kanaka Maoli whose position is more aligned with the protection of Mauna Kea. Were there other candidates for this position? Tens of thousands of the Lahui has stood in support of Mauna Kea and 40,000 have marched on Waikiki. This was an act of self-determination - a choice by our people as to the future of Mauna Kea. Next week, UCSC Mauna Kea Protectors and our friends at @aapirc_ucsc will be hosting a documentary screening on the 131st anniversary of the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom by the United States. ‘Onipa’a Kakou, translating to “Standing Firm” or “Standing Resolute” was the motto of Queen Lili'u'okalani, the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Lili’u’okalani was a steadfast advocate for her people, and even after being dispossessed by the United States-sponsored coup against her government, the queen continued to advocate for the Hawaiian people; promoting Hawaiian cultural pride in the face of U.S imperialism, settler-colonialism and racial prejudice. Today, she remains a symbol of Hawaiian resilience in the face of the ongoing U.S occupation, and is a symbol of hope to many that one day, the legitimate Hawaiian government may be restored. Thrilled to announce my new job doing native plant restoration up Mauna Kea! What a rush it is to mālama ‘āina at >9000 ft asl (especially considering I live at only 400 ft asl and I do this drive in less than an hour). If the lack of oxygen doesn't kill me, the beautiful views may just strike me down. ○ Here are a few shots from recent field days. 1. A fenced ‘āhinahina, Mauna Loa in the background. 2. Mauna Kea remains threatened by continued colonial efforts aimed at building the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT). As most of you reading this well know, this development project is strongly opposed by *many* Kānaka ‘Ōiwi and other members of our community. I'm not planting mea kanu to offset impacts: I'm planting mea kanu for our future, for the resiliency of this sacred Mauna. Today, November 28th, marks the celebration of Hawaiian Independence Day, when the Kingdom of Hawaii was formally recognized as a nation by Britain and France. Since 1843, Hawaiian Independence Day, or La’ku’oko’a, has been celebrated as the day when Hawaii became recognized as a nation and successfully fended off two much larger predatory colonial powers. The fight for Hawaiian sovereignty continues both on the islands and at UCSC as we urge the administration to divest from the TMT project. We are incredibly thankful to all of the UCSC students and community members who came out to support us during @ucscsjp’s rally last week and at the @ucsc.climatecoalition conference this past weekend! Thanks to all of you, we were able to fundraise money to provide direct mutual aid to three Hawaiian families affected by the Maui wildfires. Since starting the fundraiser in the beginning of October we have raised a total of $559 for victims of the Lahaina fires and sold over 80 linocut prints. Our fundraiser will continue into 2024, please continue to support @peoplesfundofmaui and @unitedpillarsofaloha, two organizations who are donating directly to community members affected by the fires. Have you ever heard supporters of the TMT claim that the project is possible because constructing the telescope will cause zero environmental damage? Well, the truth is a bit more complicated. To date, Mauna Kea Observatories has generated a wide variety of pollution and chemical spills, with the most recent occurring in January of 2023. Mauna Kea’s water table has never been sufficiently investigated, and scientists are still discovering new sources of fresh water on the island. Hawaiian landscape knowledge from kanaka who have lived on the Big Island for hundreds of years points to Mauna Kea as the main source of life-sustaining water for the entire island. Together, these facts make one thing clear - TMT’s supporters cannot claim in good confidence that the project won’t cause environmental harm, nor can they claim that the pollution generated by Mauna Kea Observatories in the past was benign. If constructed; the TMT will contribute to a decades long history of pollution on Hawaii’s most sacred mountain. Mauna Kea Hui petition to cancel the TMT CDUP extension is going to be before the Board of Land and Natural Resources on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2023 @ 1 pm at on zoom. Challenging Suzanne Case's decision to accept UH's "we already initiated construction so the TMT CDUP is still good" back in 2021. All the contested case parties will be able to argue. 🚨 We have an important update on the status of the Thirty Meter Telescope! 🚨 On October 5th, the director of the National Science Foundation commented on the TMT after a long period of silence, stating that the organization had continued to secure funding to continue the project. In spite of concerns raised about the project dating back to 2014, a mass protest and mobilization of Hawaiian activists that shut down the summit road to Mauna Kea for several months, and countless testimonies by Hawaiians about the pain and environmental harm the TMT will cause, the NSF intends to move forward with the project. As students attending UCSC, we are affiliated with an educational apparatus that continues to support scientific imperialism in Hawaii by directly funding the TMT project.
