Ventured out to Westport in search of salmon and rockfish yesterday to fill up the empty and unplugged freezer a little. Slept in the car, launched out at 5:00am, had 2 salmon by 6:30am applying this new to me « mooching » technique. The bite slowed down by 10am, so we went for rockfish, 42 rockfish on deck within an hour! Trolled for some salmon in the afternoon and everyone got home with something. “I have never had the thought “Wow. This is the best photo I’ve ever taken” until I looked at this shot. I’m not sure if it’s truly the best in every aspect, and I’ve taken some I’m pretty stoked about since then, but as soon as I saw it I was speechless and didn’t know what to do with myself. Love at first sight. I never think like that regarding my own work, but something about this one feels special. I didn’t plan this shot, or even know I would be heading out to the beach until I made the last minute decision to hop in my car. But I’m blessed to live only 15 miles from this beach, making these kinds of spontaneous trips possible. On this particular day I had a good feeling about the sunset and thought I should take advantage of it since I haven’t done that nearly enough this summer. I probably spent an hour and a half sitting on the jetty snapping countless photos of the surfers. Around 7:30 I called it and started rock hopping my way back to the main path. I had over a mile to walk back to the car and didn’t want to be out alone in the dark. As evidenced by this photo, that timing just happened to be perfect. Once I vacated the jetty I turned around to see the sun rays perfectly illuminating the silhouettes of fishermen standing amidst the spray of the ocean; a case of being in the right place at the right time. I wouldn’t be able to recreate this photo with any amount of planning. It was so perfect that I barely did anything other than edit the crop and clean up a few tiny details. It really truly looked like this in-person. I think this is a genuine once-in-a-lifetime shot and I’m stoked. I love being able to showcase the beauty of the area I grew up in.” 🧡 @katiejmcgregor

The color is caused by biliverdin, a byproduct of the breakdown of blood, and contributes to the green coloration of bruises as they heal. These oysters, oysters RockaMargie as I have dubbed them, were topped with @porkpanko that Mantry had sent me to try, and parmesan. Then fire roasted on the @burchbarrel. To perfectly roast these I simply placed them on the indirect fire side, lowered the lid and shut it down for about 3-5 minutes. When I lifted the lid, the nectar was bubbling and they had become nicely golden...perfect. When I learned how to make crab cakes from @chef_patricia_wa we used panko, so I told her about the pork panko. Pork panko is gluten free, keto friendly and delicious so I gifted Patricia the rest of my jar. Why am I promoting Washington? Because it's right there. The beach is literally less than 12 hours away.... And so is the "Pot shed." The Pot Shed sells only succulents and flower pots that Mickey has made in the form of huge leaves. While in Westport, if you drive a couple miles south looking for a really great Beach Access, you will see the Pot Shed sign....do yourself a favor and stop in. Mickey family has sole succulents from this property for over 100 years. Her families story and history are amazing and she loves to share her knowledge of the area and her succulents. Westport's fishing history alone is rich, colorful and boisterous. Left my Heart on the Beach before sunrise to get home so I didn't have to drive in the icy white stuff over any passes like my last weekend Snoqualmie event. The grass is trying to come through. Snow right now is always BS. While in Westport, WA cooking Oysters RockaMargie (see what I did there?😉) And Fish Tacos on the @burchbarrel I also smoked up a piece of two day marinated elk backstrap, from my elk two years ago, trying to figure out how to smoke something on this beautiful cooker! If you could taste the wonderful smokiness in these slices you would lick your lips and ask for more! The Burch Barrel can do it all. Charcoal BBQ, Live fire, Smoke, camp beer drinking talk story ring of fire!!..OMG! After having 3 separate "icy stuff" incidents, with in 20 minutes time total, I decided to stay home and do computer work....in a safe atmosphere. AND I wanted to munch on something good without going to the store where there are many cars and ice. Pulled out the backstrap, sliced it, heated it up and made a little meat rose. It sounded good to dip it in some #skipperscocktail sauce, (also made in Washington) so I did!. Everytime I go to Westport I stop at a little store in Grayland, just south, called the Pomagranite. You can access the beach from there and they have the coolest things. The final set... This meal started at @westportwinery when I found some "Spinach, Basil and Garlic ruffled pasta" from @worldofpastabilities.. The wheels started turning... And I decided I needed to forage for some "coastal morels," which I did..that is a whole other story...😳 And make a creamy, garlicky clam sauce. So I did... Get a load of these "green onions" they call them BBQ onions. I am going to bring a bunch or two home. Made some croutons from the bread we used the other day...and it just all fell together. And I ate it...almost all of it. Coming home with a whole new repertoire of appreciation for my coastal #huntfishgathercook life. I love how all of the people that make their living from the sea that we spent time with are mindful of where their livelihood comes from and how to sustain it. That is what it's all about! Full fat cream and lots of butter...nectar of the oysters, some good veggies (red and yellow sweet peppers, walla walla onions, a little garlic and some finely chopped celery) about a dozen Kumamoto oysters that I helped harvest on Monday and some sea salt and white pepper. Topped off with some oyster crackers, duh! And a sprinkle of fresh parsley. Good lord, help me!
