The Fisker Ocean has not had an easy start, and that’s putting things lightly. From quality issues, to not collecting appropriate funds, to being delisted, the little Fisker has made headlines with very little positive notes. 2011-2012 Fisker Karma I recently spotted the new Fisker Ocean, the new model from the newly revived Fisker. Today I bring their first attempt to sell a car, the Fisker Karma. The Fisker Karma is a luxury plug-in hybrid sedan with a short lifespan. The Fisker Karma is powered by a pair of electric motors that produce 161 HP. These motors receive their power from a 20.1-kWh lithium-ion battery. Once the battery is depleted or when disabled manually, the turbocharged 2.0 L Ecotec I4 producing 260 HP powers a generator and send electricity to the electric drive motors. The Karma includes a solar panel in the roof to recharge the 12V battery. The solar roof is capable of generating 0.5 kWh a day. The base model of the Karma features an “eco-friendly interior”, including salvaged/reclaimed lumber. Optional leather seating was available, but it used much more of the cow hide than would customarily be found on luxury vehicles. The EcoChic version featured a natural fabric interior with an ultra-suede dash, as part of Fisker’s ecological “animal-free” offering and with real leaf fossils embedded in door and central console glass inserts. The EPA’s range for the Karma is 32 miles and the total range 230 miles. The EPA’s official rating for combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode is 52 MPG-e while the rating in gasoline-only is 20 MPG. Pricing in the U.S. started at $102,000 USD for the EcoStandard model, $110,000 USD for the EcoSport model and $116,000 USD for the top EcoChic model. Fisker was unable to carry on production of the Fisker Karma in the absence of its sole battery supplier going bankrupt and ended production in 2012. In total around 2,450 units were build. Fisker filed for bankruptcy in November 2013, after their assets were auctioned and sold for $25 million USD. We are seemingly in the midst of witnessing the demise of electric vehicle startup Fisker. Again. Those who pay any amount of attention to the automotive world will know that the Ocean was not Henrik Fisker’s first go at building an EV. The first attempt, Fisker Automotive, was founded in 2007 and from a legal standpoint is entirely separate from the current Fisker Inc. The sole product of that entity was this, the 2012 Fisker Karma. Henrik Fisker penned such modern classics as the BMW Z8 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage, and his talents are evident in this design as well. The Karma looks almost like a garment draped over its two axles, impossibly low and slinky and even a bit cartoonish. However, once we move past the looks, things get less rosy. The Karma is a series plug in-hybrid, with “series” meaning that while there is a 260hp GM 2.0T 4-cylinder under the hood, it never actually drives the car. Its sole purpose is as a generator to charge the batteries, which run a pair of electric motors at the rear wheels. That means that the Karma’s total power output is only that of the electric motors, and though 403hp is a healthy enough number, the Karma is a deceptively big car with lots of batteries, giving it 5,300lbs of total heft to cart around. 0-60 took 5.9 seconds; brisk but markedly slower then either a gas-powered 2012 Audi A8L (5 sec) or the then brand new Tesla Model S (4.6 sec). EV range was an okay 32 miles, but at least you never had to charge unless you wanted to. Plus, the standard solar panel roof helped run the car’s 12v accessories, reducing load on the drivetrain and giving back an estimated average 4-5 miles a week of range. Inside, the Karma’s styling was as chic and unique as the outside, with reclaimed wood and funky color splits. However, the sleek design and constraints of the powertrain meant that the cabin was laughably tight, and fit and finish was mediocre. All these problems might not have doomed a new boutique carmaker -buyers likely expect some teething problems- but controversies around potential fires and the bankruptcy of its battery supplier proved too much. Fewer than 2,500 Karmas were ever built before the company went under.

Elon should have never fired Henrik. This design really deserved the Model S drivetrain. And alas, Henrik is forever the designer. As the Fisker Ocean, another awesome design, struggles due to factors a beautiful design cannot fix. Is there not a single MBA that wants to work at Fisker!? 🤪 . as it happens, I wanted to share my recent reddit comment about PHEVs (of which the Fisker Karma pictured is) -- Here's what ultimately made me switch from PHEV to BEV -- I live in the SF Bay Area mega region. No one thinks a 100 mile drive from the South Bay to the North Bay and back is a big deal (when people think of 'gas for longer trips' I'm guessing they are thinking of a 400 mile trip at least). The PHEV made sense for me if I stuck to my little corner of the mega region and never used it for weekend hiking adventures etc... I found myself driving to local hiking spots to stay on battery and skipping out on places only slightly farther afield. You know, I do feel bad about Fisker and the dilemma they are facing. Who is Henrik Fisker you ask? Have you heard of the @astonmartin DB9 and V8 Vantage? @bmw Z8? Karma? That's Fisker for starters. He further did coach builds, a collaboration with @mauricelacroix for a watch, designed a @benettiyachts yacht, furniture, and started a BEV company to build the Ocean. I'm not sure of the status of VLF Automotive though. I love his designs, and there are maybe only three I dislike..... a moped, the PCH watch, and the Orbit. I actually signed up for an Ocean, but then pulled out of the deal. With that being said, my absolute favorite is the Tramonto, which he turned out during the coach build years. This car was for me, in many ways, a clear signal that someone has "made it!' I never really lusted after super- and hyper cars, and of course I'm biased as a @mercedesbenz guy, but that Tramonto was for me the pinnacle! And in some ways, it still is (try to find one!). That damn convertible really made me dream of California, cruising along the coast on Highway 1, no traffic, top down, 70mph, cruise control, sun above me, people at the beaches and surfers in the water, sharks too, no music needed since the engine, the wind and the ocean are perfectly filling in the space. We've been busy making more upgraded components for the Fisker. This time we're tackling the horrible exhaust issues. We have designed and are manufacturing a center muffler delete kit to eliminate the overpriced rattletraps made by both Stillens and Bosal. It's a fairly simple bolt on (with the exception of the studs in the Catalytic converter that will most certainly break. I may include them proactively in the kit. We have completed prototypes and testing. On to final production. We have sent a few out to customers. First batch should be complete in the next 2 weeks if #fiskerkarma #Fisker we get time. These are made of 100% stainless, fabricated tubing including laser cut flange, and o2 bung all tig welded back purged and brushed finish (lifetime warranty), another bulletproof upgrade. Never hear the exhaust buzzing and rattling again. Keep in mind these are hand made to spec so they're not exactly cheap for us to make but so worth it. Once and done! $1100 incl shipping.

Saw my first #Fisker #Ocean out in Las Vegas earlier this year. Pretty handsome EV crossover in my opinion, but I guess lately most EV designs have been interesting. Maybe not so much in this rental-spec white color, but the strong shoulderline, large tri-spoke wheels, square wheel arches, narrow greenhouse, and even narrower lighting shapes give this car a pretty brawny athletic image. California mode seems interesting, wonder how that feels at speed in a car this size.
