Sometimes in life you just need to take a leap... forget the chasm below and throw yourself full pelt off the precipice through thin air until your tiptoes hang in suspension until the terra firma hits like a bomb beneath them. That's the thinking behind the rite of this leap here in Pembrokeshire. Only 3 people have made it. Participants had to line up on the cliff above the harbour each Good Friday and shout across the gap their heart's desire. If the watching crowds were merciful they would toss money into the gap and the wisher could scramble down the cliff to collect the money and swim to safety. If noone tossed a single coin then it was supposed that the wisher had to jump the gap for their wish to come true. If the wisher made it, the masses were duty bound to toil to achieve the wishers goal. The first jump was in 1826. Llew Matthias, who had wrecked his fishing boat coming round the headland into the harbour jumped the gap to raise funds for a new one. He narrowly made it to the delight of the crowd but the money raised wasn't enough so all the folk scavenged materials and everyone toiled and built him a beautiful boat. After this attempt the event became a largely symbolic affair with an ever growing crowd as the harbour grew. The second leap in 1893 was when Ieuan Evans an orphan farm labourer only thirteen shouted that he wished to go to America and seek his fortune. Ieuan was so well liked and looked after by all they pleaded with him to step back. He took off at such a clip he cleared the gap with space to spare and kept running all the way down to the Quay with the fare to take him to America and left the same day. In 1933 Jenni Lynn became the first lady to sail across the gap. She had pushed herself against the current of bodies at the gap all muttering and clambering for their wishes and screamed she wished to marry who she chose as she left the harbourside cliff. She made it, and everyone eagerly awaited the name of her love... it was Molly Reardon. The local minister declared them wed on the top of the cliff and although the baptist union never recognised it everyone hereabouts did. This is a story...

Castle Rock and Castle Bay, a few pics taken while cycling on this side of Cape Naturaliste on a hire bike a few weeks ago. I’d stuck to roads up until this point but at Castle Rock I decided to go with the route Strava had created and go off-road. I’ve very little bad to say about the map and route planning in Strava. Close to home it’s allowed us to do a massive amount of exploring and find roads and routes we might never have spotted without it. On this occasion however, off-road meant proper carrying your bike up a steep rocky path over a sizeable headland hiker-bike style. Not quite the sedate morning spin I had in mind, but doesn’t that always happen with holiday exploring sooner or later. I guess the moral of the story is also to avoid user error try to read the landscape and don’t just do what the hallowed app tells you to do. I took these pics as I went along, but as I was preoccupied with where is the top of the headland and am I gonna make it, I haven’t really looked at them until now. I saw my first Dugite (snake) on the path at the top, its presence in the open a reminder that this particular path was probably not much disturbed by footsteps (or bike tyres). Castle Rock itself is an impressive rocky spur at the south end of the bay and is a quick, enjoyable scramble onto the top, especially if you approach from the landward end.
