Surefire RC3 suppressor flash. @surefire_llc recommends the open tine flash hider for best flash reduction on the RC3. I tried the closed tine flash hider on my 10.3” rifle first then the open tine. RC3 on top and RC2 on bottom for comparison. Each of these pictures were the first round which had much more flash than the subsequent rounds. This week's tip from the Gunsmith Shop: What do you do if your rifle kicks too much? Our Head Gunsmith, Andrew, says you have lots of options: There are a lot of factors to consider with regards to controlling recoil - caliber, weight of the firearm, grip, shooter position, and the overall design. While there are many options available to mitigate recoil, the most common thing to do is to install a muzzle device. Here is what our Head Gunsmith, Andrew, says about that: "It can be overwhelming to decide between all of the options available for muzzle devices. So, it’s best to think about what your goal for the firearm is, and which type of recoil management you care about most. The muzzle device directs the gases in a desired direction, depending on what your goal is for the firearm. There are flash hiders, muzzle brakes, compensators, and suppressors you can consider. Or maybe a combination of these devices would best suit your needs. A compensator will give you the most recoil reduction, but this option adds a significant amount of muzzle blast, which makes your firearm much louder then normal. However, even though it is louder, the compensator will keep your muzzle down and firearm flat (where some of the other devices may not) so that you can stay on target with minimal muzzle rise in between shots. We can also control where the gases are dispersed by directional ports in the muzzle device. This allows a right/left hand shooter to compensate for the natural muzzle rise or muzzle flip that occurs with their grip. Most muzzle devices cut down felt recoil anywhere from 20-60%, depending on the style and number of ports on the muzzle device. We talked about suppressors earlier in this series, and I'll be diving in to the differences between flash hiders and muzzle brakes later in this series.
