Logan Thomas and Charles Leno Jr. are some of the first dominos to fall for player cuts this offseason. Decent moves. I personally like Logan Thomas and it’s a bit sad to see his time here come to an end, but I understand he’s older and can’t stay healthy. Time to move on. A lot of good memories I will always hold for Thomas. He’s a baller. I’m not sure what this means in terms of drafting or free agency moves, but I know I would not like to go into the season with Cole Turner as the sole starter at TE. Cutting Charles Leno Jr. is a good sign that Adam Peters and Dan Quinn recognize the problems and are ready to work on fixing them. We might just end up seeing a whole new front five by the time training camp comes around. I like the move. Hopefully the first of many when it comes to that O-line. And just like that, it’s over. As much as this season has disappointed me, I still want to thank you, Ron Rivera. You came here and took a job that nobody else wanted and while things didn’t change too much on the field, you did what you could to change things in the locker room. You lead us to one of our very few division titles in the past 20 years with a beat up team and a QB on one leg. You had this team putting up a fight against the goat and a team in a wild card game that would go on to win the Super Bowl with a QB that nobody really knew before that game. I apologize for this post being so late. I had basically no internet where I was staying at for Thanksgiving. Speaking of that, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving outside of watching this game. Lets get into it: While my game preview post always tend to be purposefully optimistic, I don’t think I ever saw us truly coming out of Dallas with a win. We fought hard in the first half, but the wheels were bound to fall off at any moment. Offense had another week where they struggle to get anything going, receivers can barely get open and Sam looks like the only half way decent part of the whole thing. As much blame as their is to go around, it’s not that hard to look at the glaringly obvious as to why this offense is still so inconsistent and it’s the big guys up front. They never had a chance against the defensive front of the Cowboys and that was proven in the second half. I’ll make another post about this side of the ball later in the week. On the defensive side of things it’s just a miserable disgrace watching this unit look like a shell of it’s former self. I could have never predicted this unit being so bad in the offseason. At least they played bad enough to start the process of coaches getting the boot. I think we might have laid hands on Dak a total of 4 times. Corners look lost 95% of the game, linebackers aren’t good for anything but run stopping, dline can’t get to the QB. The only thing I can hope is that it’s truly coaching at fault and with the right HC/DC this defense can get back on track. If I was you guys, I’d start getting ready for the rest of this season to be nothing but hard to watch football for Washington. This team is what it’s gonna be til the offseason. Happy Thanksgiving everybody!🦃 Win or lose today, I hope everyone enjoys this special time with your family and friends. Lets get into todays match up and enjoy some highlights from my favorite thanksgiving game: I think we can all agree that this season is looking incredibly bleak. The only thing I truly look forward to the rest of the way is watching how Howell continues to progress. This game can get ugly very quickly. That being said, if we’re gonna have even a slim chance today, our offense cannot get off to the slow start it has been all year. I need to see a complete game from this unit. From all the fumbles and interceptions last week, I know it’s a tall ask, but it can’t always be a 2 minute warning magic trick to win games. They’re going up against a great defense, this is gonna be a real test for Howell and EB. If this offense can’t get anything going, be prepared for a long thanksgiving dinner. They will be what makes a difference today if they come to play. Lets see if Howell can show up and show out on Thanksgiving like a special QB did 11 years ago… Defensively, I have no idea what it’s gonna look like today. If you can’t stop Tommy DeVito, I don’t see how you’re gonna stop Dak Prescott. I am not looking forward to seeing this match up nightmare and this will probably just be another game to add to the list of reasons JDR needs to go. We’ll see what they come out with, but I do not have high expectations for this unit. Best thing I can think of is to stay out of man coverage, especially with our linebackers. Press zone maybe, but I just don’t think our guys have the speed to go one on one with these Dallas WRs/RBs. Can’t truly put my figure on how this game will go today. We’ve played good twice against an arguably better Eagles team, but Dallas sometimes just seems to have all the answers against us. A lot of talk this week that given a bad game today, some reports even saying that no matter the outcome, this could be Ron Rivera’s last game as the Commanders HC. Personally, I’m not sure if I see this happening. I was listening to Grant and Danny on @1067thefan and Grant and a few people that called into the show made some decent points I’d like to highlight. This ownership group had promised Ron the season to evaluate where he is at with this team and to see if they’d like to continue with him as HC or move on during the ensuing offseason. Given where they are to this point, I think most would understand a mid season firing, but they could be worried about how they might be perceived by potential Head Coaching candidates after essentially pulling the rug out from Rivera after promising him and his staff the season. Another point he made is where they possibly stand with EB. While I think he’s a great candidate for HC, and in Ron’s firing he will most likely be interim HC, they could possibly want to look at other potential candidates in the offseason and don’t want to be essentially locked into promoting EB given he had a great last half of the season at HC. In a way kind of forcing their hand. Or the other side where they could like to give EB a fair chance and being thrusted into HC mid season, without a chance to get the guys to help coach around you and basically just taking Ron’s mess of a team is not a fair chance. Again, these are just points that Grant and a couple of his callers on the show had brought up. I thought they were interesting and kind of another side of things to look at. Personally, if this game goes south I’d like to see him gone. This season is a wash and I’d like to see how this team plays with EB in charge, even if it is on short notice and not the most fair evaluation. Only time will tell what will happen. It doesn’t seem to matter how bad the Giants may be, you can always count on them to have their game of the year vs. Washington. We’ve lost to so many bottom of the league teams, it’s just time to admit that we are no better than they are. On paper, this is a solid team. On the field? Whether you want to blame coaching or personnel, they don’t got it. Howell had what was his second worst outing of the year. He bounced back from his last 3 int game tremendously, so I’m not too worried about it. Just made some bad decisions trying to play hero ball and got burnt. It’s all in the process of learning what he can and can’t do in this league. Still, he needs to play better and clean up the mistakes. The rest of the offense needs to do the same. 4 fumbles 3 lost? Are you kidding me? Every player who put the ball on the ground should do nothing but ball control drills til Thursday. Completely unacceptable. Also, I’m not sure if I was the only one to notice, but that last drive for our offense a Giants DE lined up offsides the entire possession. They only called it on the 4th and short, but he was off the entire drive. It Really made me upset. Defense might have had one of, if not, their best game of the season and that’s not really saying much. 9 sacks, but let Tommy DeVito throw all over the yard. Had him looking like a prime Eli out there. Held Barkley in check for the most part up until the second half. I’ll cut the defense some slack within the fact that they were constantly on the field due to offensive mistakes. Still, they let the 2-8 Giants put 24 points up on them. I did like the way they played in the first half, it’s just hard to hold up when the offense keeps putting you in terrible positions. This game could have been a lot worse if the defense didn’t come through at times. Still not the greatest defensive game, but I liked what a saw at times. I’m really not sure what it is about the Giants that makes our team forget how to play football, but they have our number. This season looks like a total wash. While I’m still unsure what the future holds for this team, there is one thing I’ll always be sure of, I want this team to win. The only real thing I’m looking for the rest of this season is the progression of Sam Howell and this offense. The consistency has been building every week and I just hope to see it really start to come together toward the end of the season. I want to see them play great through a whole game. Get going early and keep their foot on the gas for all 4 quarters. I need to see a complete game today, especially against a struggling opponent. Defensively I’m not sure how it’s gonna go today. For the most part this unit has been nothing but a pushover punching bag for any offense they face. Another tough close game loss. This one hurt. This game is just another reason to add to the list of why Rivera and JDR need to go. The defense, as per usual, gave this game away. I’ll give them credit for holding Seattle to a few field goals in the first half, but it felt like the dam was gonna eventually break and it did. I said it in my preview post, playing single man coverage on Metcalf is gonna hurt us. Well, it ended up costing us the game. BSJ couldn’t cover him one on one and shouldn’t have been asked to in the first place. It was a PI by all means, but why are we playing one on one in that situation to begin with? I just don’t understand the thought process of Ron and Del Rio’s play calling. Also if anyone should have done it, it should have been Fuller, not BSJ. Not that is would have been any different, but I like my chances with Fuller more. On top of the terrible secondary play, another week goes by that our two top players on payroll are completely abysmal. The faults at dline this year has to do with both coaching and personnel, but it just looks like they’re not even trying out there. Allen did record a sack, but other than that they were both non factors. I don’t know what to do about this defense other then get someone in here who knows how to coach them. Offensively we got started strong and then it was a cluster of mistakes for several quarters. The fumble by Howell definitely hurt, but defense bailed us out for once and the offense finally got it together when it mattered. You’d like to see them play good from start to finish, but there are still growing pains and missing pieces on this offense that I’m willing to deal with as the future looks promising for this unit. Sam is slowly but surely molding into the QB I see him becoming. The consistency is coming together both with Sam and EBs play calling. They are the future. I’m excited to watch this offense the rest of the way. I’m not sure how we got to this point where the defense is the problem, but we’re here. Today is gonna be a tough one. Seattle is coming off of what was by far their worst loss of the season, while we just barely scooted past the Patriots. This game is winnable, but we need to play some pretty sound football on both sides of the ball if we’re gonna have a chance. While Howell has made a lot of progression and has looked better week by week, I’d like to see him have a clean game today. If we’re gonna win, we’ll need it. Seahawks are a team we will most likely have to play keep up with and a mistake like an unnecessary INT can prove costly. I’d like to see the run game open up more like it did last week. Feed BRob, wear down the defense and let Howell put it over the top of em when they get tired. This offense will be the deciding factor of this game for us. Defensively, this will be a bigger test then last week without Young and Sweat. We’re gonna see what these guys are truly made of. I think the best plan of action is to try and stay out of man coverage, at least with DK. Our corners are small and lengthy. Don’t put them in a position to get man handled and let them do what they do best, jump routes. I’m excited to see who steps up in replacement on the dline. I’ve heard a lot of people talking this week about whether or not we should be winning games at this point. Mostly after the Young and Sweat trades, a lot of people want to see them tank. Mainly out of fear that if they do some how end up making the playoffs, this new ownership group will keep Ron and company around for another season. In my humble opinion, I don’t see them bringing back this coaching staff (except for EB) for any reason, unless they somehow will their way all the way to an NFC Championship game. I’d like to give the benefit of the doubt to an ownership group, especially Josh Harris, to see how terribly run this operation has been and make the right decision. Josh Harris had Doc Rivers fired after he took the 76ers to the playoffs and were second round exits for the third time. He doesn’t accept short comings. I don’t think his new 6 billion dollar team would be any different. All that being said, I’ll never agree with tanking. It’s a losers mentality. I think the rest of this season fans should be focused on Howell’s development as a young starter and seeing what him and EB have with this offense. It would take so much for them to keep Ron around after all the disorganization over the years, the slow starts, the bad losses to bad teams, Ron not even knowing we were out of the playoff race after a terrible game against the Browns. Even if we make the playoffs, it is just incredibly unlikely that the owners wouldn’t clean house. Some people are asking why Ron and Jack aren’t already gone and thats understandable. The only thing I could think of is that they don’t want to throw away the season at this moment. It probably won’t happen until the offseason, but we’ll see. Bottom line, root for your team. It was a decent win on Sunday. A lot to like, a lot to not like. It’s hard to gauge this team after this game with how bad the Patriots are, but a win is a win. For the most part I like how the offense executed. Pringle had a breakout game, Howell played good for the most part and after the first quarter guys were actually catching the ball. The offensive line looks much improved for the second week in a row. The big thing for me is how many points they kept losing out on due to drives just gassing out at the end. It felt like drives were going great and they were as we dominated TOP, but they would die out toward the end resulting in a punt most times or a field goal. I also am not sure what Howell saw at the end of the half to throw that ball, but that might be worse than any other pick he’s thrown this season. Mistakes like that cannot happen. Basically what I’m saying is, I need to see more then 20 points against a team like the Patriots. Defense came up big when it needed to most. They got ran over most of the first half, but got it together at halftime. Definitely hard to say where they’re at without Montez or Chase when they just played Mac Jones. But then again, this defense can’t get much worse without them anyways. Glad to see Quan Martin finally getting on the field for some meaningful snaps and ended up making the biggest play of the game. This next week will be a bigger test for them, so I love the momentum for this unit going into next week. Also, worst roughing call ever. Overall a good win. Would have loved to seen more of a score gap, but the score doesn’t tell the full story of the game. We controlled the game for the most part. Not sure what the outlook for the season is at this point. I do know that if we’re gonna at least crawl our way to a Wild Card spot, today is a must win. Today will most likely come down to how well the offense plays. If Howell can have a somewhat similar performance today like he did last week, we can run away with it. I need to see Howell have a great performance when he plays a team not named the Eagles. Also, run the damn ball EB. Truth be told, this defense truly can’t get much worse. What an interesting day. We all went in to today assuming one of our DE’s would be traded, I don’t think anybody thought they would both be gone. Here is my thoughts on the day: We got great value for Sweat and while I’ll miss him, I always felt like he was gonna be gone by the deadline. I wish we would have gotten more in return for Chase Young, that’s what I’m most upset with, but I understand why they got rid of both. Josh Harris is getting ready for the rebuild and setting up a lot of nice picks and a decently talented team to start with for the new GM and coaching staff that will be here next year. We have 5 picks in the top 60 for the upcoming draft. I know draft picks are not always gonna work out, but it’s a great start for a new regime. The reality is, we couldn’t pay both. The bigger reality is, they didn’t want to pay Chase Young. They declined his 5th year for $17 mil. I doubt they were ever thinking of paying him 25 mil.+ per year after this season. While Chase is productive this year, he hasn’t been since his rookie year. I have to assume the thought process was sell while he’s doing good and don’t risk losing him for nothing in the offseason. Now while I do feel there was definitely room to keep one of them, the cap space we’ll have for the offseason to sure up the offensive line and focus on other positions like linebacker and/or getting some true corners will be amazing. The season looked like it was gonna be a wash and the new ownership saw a chance to hit the reset button and get ready for the next few years instead of this one very bleak season. If this was a Snyder owned team, I would feel differently, but it’s not. I have to believe Harris has an idea of what he’s doing and this is just the start of a lot of moves to come. Another heart aching loss to the Eagles. I can’t tell what was worse, our defense or the officiating. I wont sit here and blame the entire game on the refs, but an entire AJ Brown touchdown doesn’t happen if these refs weren’t so one sided. To call the Smith play a catch and to turn around and say Dotson dropped it on 3rd down is insane to me. Especially after calling it a catch then reversing it with no look at the play so we had to challenge. Offense played great up until when it mattered. Howell had some mistakes late that really put us in a bad position, but he was the only reason we were in a position to win that game in the first place. The interception was terrible. Especially when you go back and look how wide open Dotson was over the middle. A forced error on Howell on what was otherwise a perfect day for him. EB still boggles my mind on some of the play calling. He seems to be struggling with calling 3rd or 4th and short plays. He looks like he’s over thinking it and tries to be too cute and it’s costing us tremendously. This offense continues to prove how dangerous it is and can be, things just have to be more consistent. Another week where the defense was abysmal. The line looked like they didn’t even want to show up to the game. Hurts could have chilled in the pocket all day if he wanted to. Our only serviceable corner might be Kendall Fuller. Forbes is not ready to start and the fact they put him on AJ again gives me just another reason to add to the list of why Ron and JDR need to go. All around embarrassing performance by the defense. Guys wanna speak up and talk about how they’re tired of things around here, THEN PLAY LIKE IT! Play like you want to win a damn game. I don’t know what it is about this offense, but they play good against the Eagles. I still would like to see them try to open up the run game a bit more here in the second half. It’s worked for the most part, lets not get away from it. As long as the offense keeps it up we could pull this one out. The defense has had good moments, but that last drive worries me for the second half. That dline needs to start getting more pressure more consistently. This is for anyone who’s second guessing Howell or was never on the Howell train to begin with. I just want to prove a point. With a lot of fans right now one minute it’s “let him learn,” “he’s young,” “give him time.” The next it’s “he’s not suitable to be QB1,” “fans are delusional if they think he’s the future,” “sacks are all his fault.” Ima just throw some numbers out there, y’all tell me what you think: after 7 games Sam Howell has a 65.2 comp.% with 256 attempts. He has thrown for 1,749 yards with 9 TDs and 7 INTs. He’s been sacked 40 times. Just for some reference, outside of the sack numbers, his yards and TDs are on pace with guys like Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, his numbers are basically identical to Jalen Hurts, and he’s outplaying Joe Burrow by a wide margin in yards. Now I’m not the biggest numbers guy, but since people wanna throw out the sack numbers to try to spin it like it’s Howell’s fault, I’ll get into some numbers. The truth and the bottom line is, our line is absolutely terrible. Anyone who says otherwise isn’t watching the games. PFF ranks our offensive line ridiculously high. Somewhere in the top 10 I believe. I feel like it’s been a known thing that PFF doesn’t show the whole story of any situation, ever. No one in there right mind would put this line anywhere above the top 25. This line is historically bad. Now I can’t get all the plays I want to show and put them up here, but the film proves everything. Howell has had some problems with holding the ball that he has somewhat improved on, but still needs work. However, this offensive line does him no favors. Constant pressure in his face, guys getting to him immediately after the snap, free rushers. Sam Howell had 2.33 seconds average to throw last week. 2 damn seconds from the time the ball is snapped and for him to get the ball out. Nobody can work in that condition. Now overall he averages 3.05 seconds to throw which is 9th highest in the league, but in other games he’s also putting up 20+ points almost every game. I’m not here to say the kid is playing perfect. I’m here to say he’s learning, growing and developing nicely. The numbers prove that as well.

This might be a bit of an overreaction from Sunday, but what we just witnessed against the Giants is just a build up of how this offense has been run all season. They blitzed for almost three quarters straight. No adjustments. No screens, no quick passes, no run game, nothing. Just sat down and took it. From play calling to guys missing blocking assignments, everything was a mess. I’m really not sure what to make of EB so far as a play caller. On one hand we only have two games this season where the team has scored under twenty points. On the other he runs an insanely pass heavy offense and seems to have a hard time making in game adjustments. We already have adjustment problems on defense, we don’t need it on offense. Our two minute offense is pretty stellar this season, but it’s too much to ask for every game to come down to just a two minute drill where it’s do or die. Sunday proved that. I think we need to get the run game going more. Yes, I believe in Howell, but you’re putting the entire game in his hands every drive. You have to give him some room to breathe and get the ball moving on the ground. There is no reason why the guy should be almost over thirty pass attempts at the end of the first half. It’s like one run attempt fails and Eric completely bails on it. I really don’t understand the mindset. Also, when you get blitzed every play, stop running deep concepts. You call screens and quick passes every other game this season, I’m not sure why this one was any different. I hope we didn’t make a mistake bringing this guy in. I know he’s a lot better then what we’ve seen this past week, but these issues were already there, the Giants just exposed them. This could be why others passed on him. Hopefully he can adjust and bounce back against the Eagles. Where to even start? Another absolutely pathetic performance against a bottom of the barrel team. 1 of 15 on 3rd downs for the game, barely over 50 yards passing while giving up 5 sacks in just the first half. I think it’s time to start admitting that we are just no better then the teams we’re losing to. I don’t wanna see people trying to blame the refs for this game. Were there some bad calls? No question. That’s not what lost us this game. The refs aren’t the reason we were under 100 yards of offense by the end of the half or why we gave up six sacks to a defense that came into that game only having five on the season. The offense was absolutely horrendous. People wanna talk about Howell holding on to the ball too long, Jahan can’t catch, whatever else. Bottom line is, EB called a terrible game. His worst by far. The Giants blitzed almost every snap in the first half and throughout the 3rd quarter with little to no adjustments from EB. What is Howell to do when the guy can barely get the ball in his hands without a rusher in his face immediately after the snap? The lack of in time adjustment and diverse play calling is worrying. I’ve noticed it all season, but this game shined an industrial light on it. Defense held up there side of things. Probably the best performance they’ve had this season. They got all the stops when they needed to, didn’t let up a single point in the second half, and made this game a lot closer then it should have been. The secondary and Linebacker groups are still of pretty good concern, but things do seem to be trending in the right direction. It’s just hard to evaluate whether they are actually making strides or are we just playing bad offenses. I think the ladder definitely is playing a good part in it. I just hope to see the same against Philly like the first time around. This game is fully on the offense. No way around it. Not just one person to blame, but the whole damn unit let us down on Sunday. From bad play calling, horrendous blocking, guys not catching the ball, to stupid costly penalties. They dropped the ball figuratively and literally. Not much else to say other then changes need to be made asap. Onto Philly…

I’m not sure what’s happening with Dotson so far this year, but that is now 3 weeks in a row he’s dropped a crucial catch. Granted, he caught the big one vs Philly but todays drop was completely unacceptable. The game is clearly not all on him, but it came down to him and he couldn’t come through. We all remember what happened in the last match up. Let’s hope it’s not Washington vs. the refs again. Lets get into it: On the offensive side of things, I stress again this week that we need to get the run game going often and early. I like that we’ve given Sam the ability to get comfortable in the passing game with a high volume of attempts, now it’s time to start taking some pressure off of him and the pass game and get the run game going more. Not only will it tire out the defense, but it will set up the pass for Sam especially against a struggling defense. I need to see improvement with guys getting open. That WR room is too talented to have such low numbers. Like I said this is a struggling defense, lets make sure it stays that way. Defensively I need to see improvement on 3rd and long. This game is gonna be close, it always is with the Giants. Getting early stops and being able to get off the field defensively will be key today. I don’t know how else to put it, this defense has been beyond disappointing to this point. Need to continue the momentum from last week and right the ship. This unit is the anchor of this team, it’s time they start playing like it. Even with Jones out, I don’t expect this game to be anything but a tightly contested one. Time to get back over .500. Not pretty by any means, but a win is a win. Lets get into it. Every week I’m more and more impressed with Howell. The offense didn’t perform maybe as well as they have in past weeks, but Howell continues to show growth week in and week out under center. The offense as a unit shows flashes of how dangerous and talented they can be, but are clearly still growing as a young squad and only time will tell if they can put it all together. I’ve personally been more impressed with the oline. I know they are still not great, but as Howell has worked on his internal clock in the pocket, the line has looked somewhat better. Howell has to learn to step up more instead of spinning backwards into defenders. He doesn’t do it all the time, but it is something to work on and I think he knows that. In time he’ll keep learning and understanding these things and I think he’s proven that. I’m happy with the way the offense is trending. Hopefully that continues. Defensively I truly think we got bailed out by a young QB who is still trying to find his footing in this league. In the first half there were a lot of throws that if Ridder connected on instead of over/under throwing it, it would be a completely different game. We’re talking about 30 to 40 yard bombs that he just didn’t hit on. For example, if he doesn’t under throw that ball to London in the endzone, it’s a touchdown. London was basically wide open to any other QB in the league right now. A better placed ball to Robinson on the sideline, that’s at least a 20 yard catch and a first down. The defense definitely played better this week, I’m not denying that. I just think they truly exposed a QB who’s fresh out of college which is exactly what they were suppose to do. I can only hope that they play a little more sound against better competition. This defense has not played up to par until this week, I just need to see it against better competition before I hop back on the bandwagon. Overall, good win. It wasn’t pretty by any means, but not all of them will be. At the end of the day the only thing that matters is the final score. Hopefully we can do the same in New York and have some momentum going into the Philly game.
