Exactly 20 years ago, my grandfather and father bought a Ford Sierra with a blown head gasket for me for 5,000 SEK in Mellerud. My first car. Not in fantastic condition. Blown head gasket, which meant I had to refill water as often as gasoline. But... It was my car... The car that provided a first year of road trips with friends. The car that made me fall in love with the freedom of being on the road somewhere in a car. The car that gave me a lifelong love of road trips. Since then, I've gone through many cars, old and new. Fast and slow. Pretty and ugly. Since then, there have been road trips in Sweden and Europe. Cars are more than just a means of transport. The right car is like a friend. Those who get it, get it. Today, my son and I took a bus, bus, train, bus, bus from the west coast's archipelago to the outer archipelago of the east coast. Today, I bought an identical car to my first one. Same model year. Same color. Same engine. Same equipment. Same interior. The only difference? This one is rust-free, never winter-driven - in incredible condition. Crazy that this car even exists, in this condition. Temporada 1988 del TC-2000 Ultima fecha: Río Cuarto "Gayraud, tarde pero seguro" Por Néstor Carbia Revista Corsa Nro 1172. Diciembre de 1988 "Cocho" López había dominado entrenamientos y clasificación, pero Mario Gayraud largaba segundo y en "tanques llenos" había almenazado con concretar su tan postergado regreso a la victoria en TC-2000. Así lo hizo, recobrándose de una mala partida para imponerse con autoridad y "salvar sobre la hora" un año adverso no solo para él sino también para Ford, que con Del Río completó aquí un reconfortante 1-2. En ausencia del equipo oficial Renault y con Traverso ya consagrado Campeón, el atractivo principal era la definición del subcampeonato, que quedó en poder de Maldonado, 3ero esta vez El clima de Río Cuarto fue totalmente diferente al de las últimas carreras. La sensación era como si todos estuvieran distendidos y sin presiones de ningún tipo. Si bien el Campeonato estaba definido, lo que se jugaba no era poco. Guillermo Maldonado, Osvaldo "Cocho" López y en mucha menor medida Silvio Oltra, llegaron a la segunda ciudad cordobesa con posibilidades e intenciones de lograr el subcampeonato de la categoría. A pesar de ello todo fue armónico, cordial, podríamos decir que hasta se puede haber sentido la sensación de que habla cierta indiferencia en el ambiente. Como que muchos, quizá, no tenían muchos deseos de ir a Río Cuarto, incluso algunos se atrevieron a confesarlo. Pero preferimos quedarnos con la primera impresión, esa que nos hacía sentir como si estuviéramos en la primera carrera del año y no en la última. “Tired Sierra”. After Monday’s 353, it’s time for something that isn’t a big mystery: we have here a Ford Sierra! First of all, let’s talk about the history of the model. By the arrival of the mid-late 70’s, Ford faced a problem: their once famous and top selling sedans, the Cortina and the Taunus, were becoming outdated, and were bound to be overtaken by the rivals. Ford tried to counterattack this with some light refreshment to the models, but clearly, that wasn’t a permanent solution. Once they decided a new model is needed, they got to work in 1978. During the designing, Ford thought that 70’s conventionally styled sedans were to be replaced in the 80’s by hatchbacks and liftbacks with sleek aerodynamics. To achieve this, they spent a lot of time in wind tunnels to design a practical, drag coefficient body. Compared to this, the interior was conventional, using simple materials. Finally, Ford introduced the Sierra in 1982. It was sold with a 3- or 5-door liftback, a 4-door sedan, a 5-door wagon and a 5-door van body. Every Sierra was front engined with most of the being front-wheel drive, and some versions all-wheel drive. The engine selection was wide, featuring both I4 and V6 engines. The petrol powered ones were: a 1,3 litre I4, a 1,6 litre I4, a 1,8 litre I4, a 2 litre I4 (with a turbocharged version), a 2 litre V6, a 2,3 litre V6, a 2,8 litre V6, a 2,9 litre V6, a 3 litre V6 and a 5 litre V6. The diesel ones were a 1,8 litre turbocharged I4 and a 2,3 litre I4. Paired to these engines, the transmissions to choose from were a 3- or 4-speed automatic, or a 4- or 5-speed manual. Ford only gave one bigger facelift to the Sierra: this happened in 1988, and featured a completely revised outside with slight changes to the inside. In the end, Ford finished the production of the Sierra in 1993. This white example is from 1993, and it lives in Hungary since new, currently with its 5th owner. It has the 1,6 litre engine paired with the 5-speed manual. As you can see, it’s a bit beaten up all round, but I hope it will stay on the roads for a long time to come. #fordsierra
