Being back on tour has been cathartic. It’s been familiar and exciting but also strange and uncertain. I feel simultaneously right at home while feeling also out of practice. All of which as been a mostly positive experience as I feel very present lately. A lot has changed, but what hasn’t change a bit is the way touring reintroduces me to how painfully beautiful our world is, how important small moments of enjoying good food, a pretty view, a moment to read, talking to a stranger behind a counter, or enjoying a day off with friends who live away from Phoenix are. It is both easier in some ways and difficult in others to be a friend to yourself while touring, and it’s been good saying hello to this side of myself again. On Sunday we drove to Muir beach with our buds @yikesbutilikes and @arizonabeachhouse who’s company I always love. I drove us southeast down the 10 which follows the border past San Elizario, Fabens, and into Hudspeth County. The sun was almost down behind the mountains when we pulled off for gas at an exit that offered a motel, fuel station, and a restaurant called Angie’s. I met a guy out front of the station named Hank and his dog Paul and took a few photos. An old favorite from 2015 I found on my hard drive yesterday. Same side of the booth❤️. I saw them holding hands in line when we first came in. It’s been a funny thing reflecting on tour lately, something that used to have me tearing up at the thought of it often leaves me numb, as I’ve grown used to missing it. I feel like a broken record to even talk about it. I’ve been home long enough now that the road is a memory, like a locked door in my house to a room that used to be so familiar. It’s right there but I can’t touch it. I don’t even know if I’d want to go in if the door was unlocked. I am at once missing the road and happy to have put it aside for awhile. But then again, a song will come on, I’ll see something in a movie from a city I’ve been to or a stretch of highway I feel like I recognize, a book will mention something about traveling, and I swell up. I know that door won’t open for a long time, and when it does the road will certainly look different than I remember it. But I can deal. I skirted those feelings away as we pulled into a relatively empty Love's station somewhere in central California. The sun was all the way down behind the mountains. I love it most on the interstate at that time - after golden hour, almost too dark to photograph, where you can see planets and bright stars starting to poke through the blue. How the horizon has that slight glow of pink where the sun is disappearing. The guys went inside to use the bathroom and I left the van and meandered away from the station into a large dirt lot that reached out towards crop fields. You could hear the semi trucks hissing and shifting gears up on the highway, that gentle hum of the cars going over the overpass. I stood there looking out towards the highway at the brake lights and headlamps driving by with the mountains and dusk behind them. There was a small breeze and it was cold enough for a light jacket.
