Sometimes I wonder why I may have chosen a job at a medical software company. I went to college for retail marketing. What is even happening? Well one thing that I learned quite a bit about at this job was “if, then” statements. Meaning “if this happens, then this will happen”. And this is how I picture soul plans. One giant map, puzzle, choose your own adventure book where each decision brings you to a new destination, leads you to pick up a new piece, turns the page to another chapter. What if you can think of them all as neutral, if not good? Could you connect all the pins? Put all the pieces together? Learn how to get to your favorite chapters? It’s all possible. You just have to save up enough courage to start. What got me thinking about this is many days of peopling (a term I often use to describe anything other than hermiting, which would be the opposite of peopling). I forget somtimes when peopling that I can still do so slowly. I don’t have to go at the pace of anyone else. But it can be hard not to keep speeding up with the pace of life. When hermiting, my animals at home remind me of the universe’s secrets. This morning I really just wanted to lay on the couch and exist but my animals’ fur really needed to be brushed to help them get their winter coats off. While I was brushing Ghost, her movements showed her quiet appreciation as she purred and I matched her energy. When I was done, I began frantically picking up the fur that was now covering the floor as if someone would scold me for it being there. I quickly realized that Ghost was looking at me like “really, Mom? Calm down.” When my heart rate slowed to relax me again I remembered how I got burnt out in the first place. It’s not always about doing the wrong things for you. Sometimes it’s about doing them too long or going too hard. Maybe traffic lights go from red to green, but you don’t have to race off the line. 29 years ago tonight we had a super quaint rehearsal dinner in Lake Tahoe. Dinner for 2 with a view of the lake? Yes please!!! Lake Tahoe was our dream destination and believe me, we had to pinch pennies big time to get there! We used points for the hotel and airline miles for the flight that we both had been saving up! My flowers were a simple, small bouquet. Here Comes the Bride was played on a 90’s boom box. It was perfect!! We were supposed to exchange our vows outdoors on the lake, but Mother Nature had other plans as we woke up to snow on our wedding morning. Plan B brought us indoors to small venue above a 7-11 in a strip mall. But to be honest, It didn’t matter where we got married, how many flowers I carried or if my walk down the aisle was to music playing from a cheesy boom box. We had dreams. Dreams of building a loving partnership that would last a lifetime! OUR song was INXS “Never Tear Us Apart”...and it’s still one of our favorites!
