The smiley is undoubtedly one of the most iconic logos in the world. The original version was created in 1963 in Worcester, Massachusetts by Harvey Ross Ball, an American graphic artist and ad man. Today, we know it as the unmistakable symbol of raving but Over the years, it’s been an advertising logo, a hippy fad, a mode of communication and a nightlife brand. We can say with certainty that the first person to use the smiley in club culture was Danny Rampling. In the September of ’87, Rampling had gone to Ibiza to celebrate Paul Oakenfold’s birthday and fell in love with the music and the atmosphere on the dancefloor of Amnesia. Returning to London, he decided to try to recreate the vibe of Amnesia at his own night, Shoom, mixing up Balearic vibes with the new house imports coming from Chicago and New York. The Roland TR-808 and TR-909 are two of the most iconic drum machines in music history. Each machine is responsible for creating the rhythmic and sonic backbone of 3 of the most influential genres of music in the last 40 years: house and techno (909) and hip-hop (808). In the early ‘80s dance music as we know it didn’t exist. Of course, there had been disco and some uptempo soul records would definitely get you moving, but the ‘lights-out, heads-down’ vibe of house and techno was nowhere to be seen or heard. This was especially true in Osaka, Japan, where a team of engineers at Roland Corporation began working on the successor to the TR-808, unaware of the impact it would have on electronic music and culture. Launched in 1983 for $1300, the Roland TR-909 was only produced for a year—with just 10,000 units made.
