Wax - Vol 2 Issue 3 (1997) This issue of Wax features the governor DJ Hype on the cover. Fresh off the back of cleaning up the Hardcore Dance Awards, he shares his thoughts whilst driving between gigs. "A suit? I don't wear suits! I don't even own a suit. The last time I wore a suit was in 1989, when I was in court...yeah...no, I nicked it from Burberry's. It cost a grand and I sold it to my mate Roland for £80 and a telly." In the beamer on the way to 5000 punters at United Dance it's another day at the office for Hype. "United Dance is always a good party, so it's alright. But to be honest, the big events are no big deal to me anymore. It's not that I'm complacent, but when you've played as many as I have, you know that people aren't going to respond anymore than they have done already, so you lose perspective a bit. When I first played Jungle Fever, I got four rewinds on my first record, and that was a massive confidence boost. So I don't really worry about the size of the venue." He goes into detail on the 'Fugees or Not' remix. Sony got wind of Zinc's bootleg and threatened Hype with legal action, as it was only on dubplate they got away with it. Sony intended to release it if The Fugees liked it as a lot of big hip hop tracks had official jungle remixes at the time. In the meantime the track got bootlegged by someone who put Hype's name on it, Hype rang Sony to explain it wasn't him but it was too late and the deal got dropped. There's also an interview with the DJ's DJ Jeff Mills. He talks about how he got his unique 'chuck em in, chuck em out' style from the old radio days in Detroit. After the producer told him the show was being cut by 30 minutes, Mills decided to play the same amount of records but only the best bits, chopping in sections and speeding them up. "Your ears hear less change, it's also an old radio trick to make yourself sound peppier than another station."  He's got a reputation for attracting trainspotters but much prefers an open crowd.
