Wet grass blades are weighed down from the weight of the water, so they don’t stand up straight as dry blades do. If all the blades aren’t standing up straight, you won’t be able to cut them evenly. Once the grass is dry and standing up straight, you will notice the unevenness of your lawn. This will result in having a messier, choppy-looking lawn from torn grass blades and cause you to have to mow again. Fungal diseases thrive in a wet environment, and torn grass blades make your wet lawn more susceptible to these diseases. Common fungal diseases from mowing wet grass include: * Brown patch – Brown grass in irregular circles * Anthracnose – Reddish-brown patches * Leaf spot – Small brown spots with purplish-red or dark brown borders * Red thread – Reddish threads on the tips of grass blades If fungal diseases aren’t caught and treated early, they can spread and cause more damage throughout your lawn. With each mowing, only remove about the top 1/3 of the grass blade. To put it in perspective, a good time to mow lawns is when your grass is about 3 2/3 inches high. While you may think it saves you time, scalping your lawn weakens grass blades and causes them to die. A waterlogged lawn is common this time of year, and here’s what to do!🌱 Usually occurring over winter, heavy rainfall can leave lawns soggy and muddy underfoot. Look for large pools of water or a squelchy feeling as you walk over the grass. If your lawn has fallen victim to waterlogging, avoid walking on it as much as you can and make sure to follow these key action steps. The first thing to do if your lawn is waterlogged is to make sure no one walks over it, as that can churn up the grass and make the problem much worse than it was to begin with. Wait for the majority of the water to evaporate, but if there is any left that won’t go, gently push it toward the borders of your lawn or a drain with a broom or brush. Make sure the soil is moist but not wet before you take any further action on it. There are certain steps you can take that will help you avoid getting a waterlogged lawn, even if the rainfall is particularly heavy. Regular aeration of your lawn is key, as that allows plenty of drainage and air into the deeper levels of the soil. Once the lawn has been aerated, you can re-seed to allow the seeds plenty of opportunity to germinate and create a thicker, more complex set of roots. The high concentration of nitrogen in dog urine is what causes those unsightly brown patches. While nitrogen is a key ingredient in many fertilizers, too much will damage and even kill grass. Most times, the grass subjected to your dog’s urine is beyond recovery. However, it is a good idea to water the area to dilute salts which have accumulated in the soil. There’s a chance enough of the grass will actually recover, but that’s not always the case. Typically, the only recourse is to remove the dead sod and about one-half inch to an inch of soil and reseed. But our furry friends are worth it, right?
