I believe in sacrificial love. I am for making choices that benefit others that don't necessarily benefit me. However, there is a difference between doing this in a healthy way and an unhealthy way. If one person in a relationship is ALWAYS the one compromising, that's not right. That's toxic. A healthy relationship has mutual give and take. God does want us to make choices that benefit others that don't always benefit us, but there's a balance to it. I will never accept that the resurrection power of Jesus, the same power that raised Him from the dead, is inside me, but it doesn't really do anything in every day life. The way some believers talk is that this power improves your character, and that's about it. I don't mean to be rude, but that is unbelief. God's power absolutely improves our character, but I will never limit it to that. The dunamis power of God is miracle power. We see it demonstrated in the life of Jesus, the apostles, and normal believers in Acts. I've seen it demonstrated myself. Don't limit what is possible through God's power. Accusations are intriguing to me. Because they expose how the accuser thinks. Many legalists only serve God and 'love' people to avoid hell. They are really serving themselves. Remove the fear of going to hell from believers by teaching that they are eternally secure, and they see no reason to live for God anymore. That's why they accuse grace teachers of giving people a license to sin. Because for them, the only reason they are resisting sin is to avoid hell. How revealing! The main reason we are to live well is love. Living in sin is hateful. Whether it's lust, pride, covetousness, etc. None of it is loving. None of it considers the good of other people. Paul didn't say the fear of going to hell compelled him to reach the lost. He said the love of Christ compelled him. Love was his motivation for serving God and people. It should be our motivation as well. I know I'm righteous no matter what. But I don't like seeing believers beaten down and enslaved, so I write and teach to help people break free. Because I love people. I also share the gospel with non-Christians, not to avoid hell myself, but because I don't want anyone to suffer that fate by rejecting God. I love people. Under legalism, fear and control motivated me. Under grace, freedom and love motivates me. Salvation is a free gift because of the hell Jesus went through on the cross. He paid the ultimate price to make it easy for anyone to be saved. God wants everyone to be redeemed and reconciled to Him. He has made it easy on purpose. But self-righteous people can't handle this message. So they add on a number of things to make the gospel feed their ego. They add on: - Being fully committed - Promising not to sin - Suffering in some way - Some kind of self-denial These are unauthorised additions to the gospel! The gospel reveals the free gift of righteousness! I personally am committed to serving God, I try not to sin, I have suffered for Jesus in various ways, and I don't want to be selfish, but these things have NOTHING to do with salvation. I am righteous as a free gift, by grace through faith. All someone has to do to be saved forever is simply receive forgiveness by believing in Jesus and trusting He died in their place for their sins and rose from the dead. That's it. No payment. No commitment. No promises. No church membership. No self-righteous nonsense. Just grace - unmerited favour. Let the cross offend people! Let it make them angry! It means we are in line with Paul: 'Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? One of the most interesting phrases in the New Testament is found in Hebrews: 'Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.' — Hebrews 4:11 Labouring to rest doesn't seem to make sense, yet it is true to life. Even in the natural world, it is challenging to set aside time to do nothing except relax. Many people even struggle to sleep! We do need to work hard to make time to rest. Once we believe in Jesus, we enter into the rest of salvation. We are saved and eternally secure in Christ. And there's nothing the devil or anyone else can do about it. However, to enjoy this rest on a daily basis we must persist in faith. We must continue to believe that we are loved and accepted by God, righteous apart from works, new creations in Christ, and heirs of God's blessings. This is the challenging part, and it does require work. It seems the whole world is set up to undermine the gospel. It promotes human effort, self-righteousness, and it gives people an identity based on their works. Then there is the compromised Christian world, where numerous preachers avoid the finished work of Jesus and keep believers under the law. To go a week, or even a day, resting in what Jesus has achieved for us is surprisingly hard work! But it's a worthwhile labour because it leads to fruitfulness and numerous blessings! So keep working on your faith. There is a legalistic culture within certain areas of Christianity that is no different from Mormonism or Jehovah's Witnesses in practise. It's just a bunch of people trying to be good by keeping rules. Christianity is not about keeping rules. It's about gathering around the finished work of Jesus and living by faith in what He achieved for us through His life, death, and resurrection. There is no place whatsoever for boasting in our works. When Jesus' finished work is the focus, our weaknesses remind us of God's love and grace for us, and our strengths lead to praise. Don't get me wrong, goodness flows from living by faith in Jesus. Good works are part of a healthy Christian life. However, when Jesus' finished work is side-lined, Christians become a bunch of insecure people trying to be good to feel good. I cannot improve on my identity in Christ. The greatest titles the world can give, things like, 'Billionaire', 'Most Successful (Fill in the Blank)', 'Celebrity'', and the like, do not hold a candle to being a beloved son of God and a citizen of heaven. While many people are trying to look better, in one form or another, to improve on their sense of identity, believers can rest in their identity in Christ. Christians can go to the gym and improve how they look, but not to improve on our identity. Saints can work hard and become the best they can at something, maybe even winning awards, but not to improve on our identity. How sad that some people who are without Christ get their identity in being famous for 15 minutes, winning a sports competition, or having a lot of money. God has something much better. By simply believing in Christ, we become righteous, holy, favoured, royal, co-heirs with Christ, light in the Lord, temples of the Spirit, immortal citizens of heaven, and on and on. All for free! Hallelujah! Don't be like the messed up world system. Don't work to become someone of value. Live life knowing you already are a person of great value. I can already hear the objections: 'You don't know about my past. You don't know about my current struggles.' I do know about them. They are called the works of the flesh. And since you are a believer, you are no longer IN the flesh. You are IN Christ. But isn't it hypocritical to think of ourselves as pure, even while we are struggling, to varying degrees, with the defiled works of the flesh? Not at all. Because our purity doesn't come from our works. It comes from our Saviour. He provided purification for our sins and washed us in His own blood. We are simply honouring His work: 'After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.' — Hebrews 1:3 'and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood.' — Revelation 1:5 Believers are righteous and holy because of Jesus' finished work. You can't get more pure than being a new creation in Christ! Can our thought life improve? Yes! Can our behaviour and lifestyles become more pure? Absolutely! But we pursue a life of holiness because we are holy people. The mud of sin isn't fitting for us anymore: 'But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints.' — Ephesians 5:3 It is not hypocritical to struggle with sin. However, it is hypocritical to say I believe Jesus made me righteous as a free gift and then act as if my works can undo that. Let's believe what Jesus did for us and learn to walk it out. When it comes to the things I am called to do, I feel like I have too much to work with! I'm not sure how I will be able to express it all in one lifetime. My personality lights up whenever I think of serving God in these ways. There are endless possibilities! However, when it comes to things I am not called to do, my mind goes blank. I have no supply for it. I feel drained even thinking about those things. See, God anoints us for our specific calling. He supplies the oil we need to keep the fire burning, and He knows exactly what we are designed to do and what we'll need to fulfil it. We are not saved by good works. And we do not sustain our salvation by good works. We are righteous as a free gift from first to last. Nevertheless, we are created FOR good works—works that are done freely (see Ephesians 2:10). Have you noticed that the world is generally quite empty? It's because most people aren't doing what they are made for. As a believer, you have been redeemed from the empty way of life and have the opportunity to use your gifts and talents for the reason you were given them—to glorify God, build up believers, and advance the gospel to the world. The life of a believer is not one of keeping rules. We are not meant to wake up in the morning and feel hundreds of commands breathing down our necks, demanding to be satisfied. Did you know that Gnostic cults taught that God predetermines peoples lives and controls every little detail, and He even chooses who will go to heaven and hell before people are born? I know that what happened to me is happening to many new believers: They get saved by grace through faith alone. Then somewhere down the road, someone tells them they have to do more than simply believe to be saved. Now they are working for their salvation. The gift has become a curse. Let me be clear that doing good works BECAUSE you are saved is wonderful and appropriate. But doing good works to MAINTAIN your salvation is self-righteousness and brings a curse. I didn't lose my salvation when I started working to keep myself saved. But I did lose that sense of blessing that I first enjoyed, and in time, my life fell apart. I was exactly like the Galatians who came under law: 'Where then is that sense of blessing you had? For I testify about you that, if possible, you would have torn out your eyes and given them to me.' — Galatians 4:15 NEVER serve God to stay saved unless you want to experience the curse. For many years in my Christian walk, I did not submit to the gift of righteousness. I was, in fact, trying to establish my own righteousness before God based on my works. No one could deny I had a zeal for God. I wanted to serve and obey Him in everything. The problem was, my 'obedience' was actually an attempt to keep myself right with God. Therefore, it was self-righteousness, which is the greatest kind of disobedience because it undermines the gospel! Isaiah calls it 'filthy rags'. Paul calls it 'dung'. Lots of Christians today talk about 'submitting to God'. Yet many are not submitting to the gift of righteousness and are busy trying to establish their own. The most vital submission in the Christian life is submitting to the gift of righteousness, which comes by grace through faith in Jesus. Once a believer is firmly established in the truth that they are righteous apart from works, no matter what, good works can be done from a place of freedom. I still love serving God. But these days, I serve Him because I know He loves and accepts me. I don't serve Him to make Him love or accept me. The difference is vast! If we aren't careful, self-discipline can become an idol. We can take something good, like self-discipline, and make it ultimate. Then it becomes dangerous. How do we know if we've crossed over to "the dark side of discipline"? Two signs are that we are unable to extend grace to others less disciplined that we are, and we are unable to extend grace to ourselves when we fail. In the new covenant, believers don't forgive others in order to be forgiven. We forgive because we have been forgiven by God once and for all. It is proper and appropriate to forgive others of their sins against us, just like God forgave our sins against Him. It's not easy, but it is good for us. Forgiving is always beneficial, but reconciling with the person who hurt us may not be. For years, I made the mistake of trusting people too quickly, in spite of all the red flags, because I thought it was the loving thing to do. It caused me a lot of unnecessary pain. I kept opening my life up to people who kept hurting me. It took me way too long to learn that I didn't have to do that. If someone is going to keep hurting me without repentance, I need to guard myself from them. I can do this by ending the connection or limiting it in some way. I recently heard a popular preacher criticising the doctrine of eternal security. They went on to claim that they maintain their own salvation by reading the Bible every day, praying a lot, trying their best to be good, pursuing God's will for their life, and fasting. In other words, they said their works keep them saved and are the reason they will make it to heaven. So what does Jesus do? In their mind, it seems Jesus merely gives them the opportunity to save themselves by their own works. In their own words, they maintain their own salvation. How scary it is to hear a Christian influencer talk that way! I can sympathise though, because I used to think exactly like this. I was blind to my own self-righteousness. Today I understand that Jesus maintains my salvation because He is my righteousness (see 1 Cor. 1:30). He is my Great High Priest and Advocate. 'But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. If you teach that salvation is a free gift, totally apart from works, and refuse to compromise on it, it will lead to people accusing you of not caring about godliness. They will say you are encouraging people to sin. I would never listen to any teacher who encouraged people to sin. But I also won't listen to preachers who teach that resisting sin is what gets or keeps a person saved. Both teachings are false. The truth is that righteousness is a free gift apart from works, from first to last. The only condition to be saved forever is to believe. "Looking unto Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Hebrews 12:2) The Christian life is a marathon. There will be moments of doubt and weariness. In these times, fix your eyes on Jesus, the source of our strength. Imagine a runner in a gruelling race, legs burning, lungs screaming, the finish line a distant mirage. But then, they see their coach cheering them on – the one who trained them, who believes in them, who knows they can finish. Jesus is our champion, our coach in the race of faith. He has walked the path before us, experiencing every temptation and struggle we face. Hebrews 4:15 says, "For we do not have a high priest unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way...yet without sin." Jesus didn't just experience our struggles; He conquered them. Hebrews highlights the immense joy set before Him – redeeming humanity. Because of this joy, He endured the cross's shame. Yet, He rose again, victorious over sin and death, and now sits at God's right hand, the symbol of power and authority. Fixing our eyes on Jesus reminds us of the price He paid for our salvation. It fuels our determination to keep running, to press on in faith. The gospel of grace reminds us it's not about our own strength, but relying on the One who has already won the race for us. So, the next time you feel discouraged, remember the champion cheering you on. Look to Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith, and draw strength from His unwavering love and sacrifice. I wanted a resource that would help me build my days around Jesus' finished work, my calling, and would help me stay guarded as things became darker in this world. That's why I created The Overflow Planner. Each day asks three questions: 1. How will you move deeper into Jesus' finished work today? I then choose an aspect of Jesus' finished work to meditate upon. 2. How will you move forward in your calling today? I think about where the Spirit has been leading me and plan to make some progress in these areas. 3. Is there anything or anyone that you need to guard your heart against today? On days when I feel hopeless, I set my heart on God's promises. On days when I feel bad about myself, I will remind myself of my new identity, etc. Then I simply take one day at a time and try to make the most of it. How do I put into words the difference between serving to prove I'm saved, and serving because I am 100% sure that I am saved forever, apart from works? One is slavery to fear, the other is liberty to love. One is restless and anxious, the other is full of rest and peace. One makes it all about my works, the other makes it all about Jesus' work. One glorifies my commitment to God, the other glorifies God's commitment to me. One is dead, the other is alive. One produces dead works, the other produces good works. One burdened me like nothing else, the other empowers me like nothing else. One made God feel distant and cruel, the other makes God feel close and kind. One produces self-righteousness, the other is all about the gift of righteousness. One made me look down on struggling believers, the other leads me to love struggling believers. One was full of the spirit of fear, the other is full of the Spirit of God. One leads to serving reluctantly, the other leads to serving freely. One leads to an outward appearance of godliness with no power, the other leads to inward transformation by the power of the Spirit. I have heard many preachers quoting Titus 2:11-12, and hammering the point home that grace teaches us to say no to ungodliness and worldly lusts. They are right, but their conclusion is often wrong. 'See, we are still under the law. We still need to keep rules to be godly.' But that's not what the verse says! It states that GRACE (UNMERITED FAVOUR) teaches us to live godly lives. How? Certainly not through the law. We are not under the law. God's grace teaches us (a process) to live godly lives by showing us who we are in Christ. When we understand that we are new creations, righteous people, dead to sin, free from law, light in the Lord, holy, favoured, and beloved citizens of heaven, it makes sense to live out who we are. In other words, grace teaches us to express our true selves—who we have already become in Christ! Part of this is saying no to ungodliness because that's not fitting for us anymore. Of course, no one is perfect. But we can, through the power of the Spirit, learn to express our new self more and more.
