Stilwell, MO 1948-? For a quarter, visitors to Stilwell could have their likeness carved into a wooden figure and placed in the miniature town of Whisper Falls. A roadside attraction, Whisper Falls was the creation of local farmer, Benjamin Fewkes. Mourning the loss of his wife of 57 years, Ben set out to create a town where no one ever grows old and dies. The impossibly detailed 10’x10’ roadside diorama garnered the attention of local newspapers and travelers of Route 66. The exact number isn’t known but it’s speculated that some 85 people paid to become honorary residents of Whisper Falls, but their residency didn’t end when they left the attraction. Nearly all visitors who signed the guest book and paid to have their likeness live in the tiny town began to experience strange dreams. The complaints were all the same; they dreamt every night of that tiny model town. In the dream they found themselves stuck in the same pose and place as their carved figure. Some interviews confessed to a dark menacing presence in their dream; a god-like being lurking over the town and moving its frozen dreaming residents around the diorama. Many sent Ben letters pleading to have their figures removed from the town, but all requests were met with silence. On July 15, 1958 Jared Stolan made the trek from Fresno, CA to Stilwell in hopes of personally reclaiming his figure. To his horror, the roadside display was gone and the farmhouse abandoned. #56WeeksWithNancyDrew Week 16, Book 12 (Someone has fallen a little farther behind that she had thought! 🤦🏼♀️) Originally published in 1935, The Message in the Hollow Oak was written by Mildred A. Wirt Benson under the name Carolyn Keene. Pictured above is the 1972 revised text edition with 20 chapters and 181 pages. Grace Grote is credited as “revising” this one, but just about the only thing this book has in common with the original is a title. I wish I knew the reasoning behind the decision to completely scrap Wirt Benson’s lovely book. Not that I would ever understand it. The plot is insanely boring. There is way too much boy drama. The version of Nancy we are subjected to in this one is a shell of the Nancy in the original. Can you say lobotomy? Oh, and the original text was set in Canada, but the revised text is set in Illinois. This was the one Nancy Drew book set in Canada and I have to say, the Canadian setting was a whole lot more thrilling! I’m sure Illinois is a lovely place both to live and to set a book, but this book did a disservice to the state by making it seem incredibly dull. April Reading Wrap Up The three star reads had to find me eventually.... Before April I had three 3 star reads, but this month alone I had that same amount! From reviews I already posted on here, you know I loved Four-Alarm Homicide and really liked Truth Truth Lie. You can also guess I enjoyed Coffee, Tea, Or Murder? That means the bottom three are: If Something Happens To Me, Kill Or Bee Killed, and The Berry Pickers. If Something Happens To Me has super short chapters that should make reading it a breeze, but it felt like it could have been shorter. You can read my full review on Goodreads, but let's just say this thriller didn't thrill me. Kill Or Bee Killed should have been the highlight of the month. The colors on the cover are adorable and a bee theme is meant for me. Unfortunately some of the detecting felt like a game, and the romance was not my thing. Also, the second half dragged. The supporting characters were the best part. The Berry Pickers. Ah what a disappointment. After a strongish first half, the second petered out. The characters grew to be unlikable, and an opportunity for a strong, emotional impact was wasted. I'm still reading The Murder At The Vicarage and should finish today, so my final book for April will be a winner at least. I can't wait to find out if my idea is correct. It's probably not lol. Les heures lointaines est un roman dense qui aborde beaucoup comme la littérature, l'écriture, la construction de soi, la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la folie, ... Cependant, la lecture est longue et tortueuse, même si la plume est agréable et pousse à tourner les pages. Les intrigues, nombreuse, se mêlent et se démêlent telles un serpent parcourant les pièces de ce château maudit. Mais que cache-t-il, justement ? Des fantômes ? Des rêveries ? Ou des crimes ? J'ai beaucoup aimé l'âme du roman, retrouvant avec plaisir les charmes de Daphné du Maurier et des romans neo-gothiques anglais. Mais ce vieux château et ses secrets tortueux ne m'a pas convaincue. Le roman pèse plus de 800 pages dans la version poche, avec beaucoup de longueurs (propres au style, certes). This is the most “plotting” I’ve done in a long time 🤣 (plus three more pages of scattered, unorganized notes) And I can’t do anymore 🤷♀️ it’s time to start writing today. I am not a plotter. Plotting gives me anxiety. It makes me feel restrained. Having said that! Writing mysteries starring a private detective has really made me appreciate the need to have some sort of plan going into a book 🥴🥴 No One Left, the second book in the Pinter P.I. Series, the one that just went off to my editor, taught me a painful lesson. Sometimes even us “pantsers ” or discovery writers - whichever term you prefer - still need a plan 🫠 That was the most pantsing I’ve ever pantsed and I don’t think I’ll ever do that again 🤣 Editing is painful enough as it is. But for that book, it was BRUTAL. So, lesson learned? I guess we’ll see 😏 But as far as book three in the Pinter P.I. Series goes? Yes. I have a much more solid roadmap.
