L'ultimo (trionfale) urlo delle 500cc 2 tempi al Monte Guia. La 30^ edizione del Gran Premio motociclistico di Macau svoltasi nel 1996 tuttora viene espressamente ricordata proprio per questa ragione. Lo specialista Phillip McCallen, all'epoca già 8 volte vincitore al TT, mise a segno una dominante affermazione in sella ad una Yamaha YZR 500 schierata dal Team Millar, regolando due Kawasaki ZX-7R nei 15 giri di gara. Distanziato di 13 secondi concluse Roger Bennett, a 17" classificato terzo un Michael Rutter che di Macau GP ne vincerà successivamente 9, ma in quella circostanza celebrò il suo primo podio alla sua terza visita alla Las Vegas d'Oriente. "The Blade" si ritrovò persino in testa nelle battute iniziali, con la leadership successivamente rilevata da Bennett e, per l'appunto, ad un McCallen vincitore al personale ottavo gettone di presenza all'evento. Un Gran Premio motociclistico che rappresentò il canto del cigno per le 500cc, con una potenziale doppietta vanificata dagli errori di Mike Edwards. Con la ROC-Yamaha 500cc schierata direttamente da ROC Competition e vestita con l'inconfondibile blu GAULOISES scattò dalla pole, salvo finire lungo alla Curva do Hotel Lisboa all'avvio. Ripartì ultimissimo per poi siglare il nuovo record dell'epoca in 2’33”073 a 143,86 km/h di media avvicinando il terzo posto, salvo poi finire contro le protezioni in seguito ad un errore al sesto giro in piena Moorish Hill. Il compianto Mike Trimby sarà il primo non-pilota ad esser insignito del riconoscimento di "MotoGP Legend". Un tributo nei confronti di chi, da fondatore dell'IRTA, ha modernizzato il circus del Motomondiale, in virtù del suo inesauribile apporto per la crescita del "Continental Circus". Mr. Trimby entrerà a far parte della Hall of Fame da "non-rider", ma proprio da ex-pilota, in altri contesti, ha potuto crescere a dismisura il suo bagaglio di competenze. Affermandosi come portabandiera di alcuni eventi storici del motociclismo che devono tanto (tutto) a lui. Il Gran Premio motociclistico di Macau, ad esempio. Fino al 2011, Trimby presenziò a ben 27 edizioni di una manifestazione che, proprio lui, ha reso così grande. Con una genesi particolare. Da buon pilota di livello nazionale con partecipazioni al TT, nel 1978 incontrò Fred Merrill, per conto dell'Hong Kong Automobile Association a caccia di motociclisti stranieri proprio per il GP di Macao. Già "agente" e procacciatore di piloti e sponsor, Mike offrì la sua disponibilità, ad una condizione: tra i motociclisti in gara, ci sarebbe dovuto essere anche lui! Si arrivò così al Macau GP 1978 e, a sorpresa, concluse 3°, preceduto dal vincitore Sadao Asami e da Steve Parrish. Gli organizzatori, soddisfatti del podio conseguito e del lavoro compiuto da agente, lo invitarono anche per il 1979 (concluse 7°), per poi continuare a collaborare con la HKAA fino al 1983. Quando il Governo di Macau rilevò la gestione diretta delle iscrizioni dei motociclisti stranieri, offrì proprio a Trimby un contratto per occuparsene. Mike accettò con dedizione e professionalità questa carica, riuscendo nel corso degli anni ad invitare al Circuito da Guia stelle del motociclismo del calibro di Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Gardner, Carl Fogarty, Ron Haslam, Joey Dunlop e James Whitham. Il Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix oggi non sarebbe uno degli eventi più attesi del panorama internazionale senza Mike Trimby. Nella contemporaneità la vittoria del Gran Premio motociclistico di Macau è un affare, salvo rare eccezioni, dei piloti d'oltremanica. In origine, tuttavia, non fu propriamente così. Addirittura si dovette attendere il 1976 per registrare la prima effettiva vittoria di un motociclista non asiatico. Accadde nell'edizione del decimo anniversario del Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix svoltasi il 14 novembre 1976 con l'affermazione, in sella alla propria Yamaha TZ 750 numero 4, del britannico Chas Mortimer. Vice-Campione del Mondo 125cc nel 1972 con 7 Gran Premi mondiali vinti in carriera, riuscì a spuntarla sul giapponese Akira Terui (con una Yamaha TZ 350) e sul malese Sonny Soh, a sua volta ai comandi di una TZ 750 vestita con i colori CAMEL. L'originario del Surrey si ritrovò con strada libera verso la vittoria in seguito all'uscita di scena di Hideo Kanaya, detentore del trofeo ed al via con una delle prime Yamaha YZR 500, finito fuori alla Police Bend dopo esser scappato via nelle battute iniziali della contesa. Un successo in ogni caso memorabile per Mortimer, conseguito nel primo Gran Premio di Macao con le competizioni a quattro ruote sotto l'egida della FIA. La tradizione del motociclismo finlandese 🇫🇮 ci ha ammaliati con il Gran Premio di Imatra e, nel corso degli anni, fatto conoscere ed apprezzare "Flying Finn" affermatisi come vere e proprie leggende. Nell'offroad, per fare qualche nome, Tommi Ahvala, Juha Salminen, Mika Ahola, Eero Remes e Mauno Hermunen. Nella velocità, ovviamente, spicca su tutti Jarno Saarinen. Una scuola del motociclismo finlandese arrivata fino ai giorni nostri con, su pista, Mika Kallio e Niki Tuuli, seguendo con un occhio di riguardo per il futuro una giovane promessa come Rico Salmela. Un movimento caratterizzato da una curiosa coincidenza. Inspiegabile o forse no, considerando che si parla di "road races". A 17 ore di volo da Imatra, al Monte Guia di Macau 🇲🇴 due piloti finlandesi sono entrati nella storia del Gran Premio motociclistico. L'un l'altro a distanza di 37 anni. Nell'edizione 1985 Eero Hyvarinen, 29 Gran Premi disputati nel Motomondiale e già Campione Europeo 500cc, concluse 3°, primo inseguitore della scatenata coppia Honda Benelux formata da Ron Haslam e Didier de Radigues. Trascorsi 33 anni, nel 2018 un finlandese tornò a correre al Circuito cittadino del Monte Guia: la rivelazione dell'IRRC Erno Kostamo, 17° in quell'edizione, classificatosi poi 9° nel 2019 per quanto, suo malgrado, coinvolto nella carambola del secondo via. Superato il biennio di cancellazioni dovute all'emergenza pandemica, nel 2022 dominò la scena: primo in tutti i turni di prove (libere, qualifiche 1 e 2, nei due Warm Up), aggiudicandosi la vittoria con la BMW S 1000 RR di Penz13 con annesso giro più veloce nell'unica gara disputata in 2'27"493 a 149.3 km/h di media. Un successo storico per Erno Kostamo, nel frattempo affermatosi come apprezzato newcomer tra TT e North West 200, riportando d'attualità il movimento dei "Flying Finn" a Macau. C'era un tempo in cui, al Gran Premio motociclistico di 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐮, correvano le 500cc ufficiali del Motomondiale. Come nella 38esima edizione svoltasi nel 𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟏, ricordata con un sorriso dagli appassionati. Reduce da una stagione nel mondiale 500cc da compagno di squadra di Kevin Schwantz, 𝐃𝐢𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞 𝐑𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬 corse al Circuito del Monte Guia con la medesima RGV 500 ufficiale vestita con i colori LUCKY STRIKE Suzuki, centrando la vittoria in quella che sarà la sua ultima gara in carriera. Alla terza visita a Macau dopo i secondi posti conquistati nel 1985 e 1986, arpionò la vittoria regolando nella prima Heat uno scatenato Eddie Laycock (Yamaha YZR 500 del Team Millar), involandosi da indiscusso dominatore verso il successo nella seconda manche. Al termine del Gran Premio, DDR appenderà il casco al chiodo nel motociclismo, tornando successivamente alle competizioni sì, ma a 4 ruote, disputando persino insieme a Wayne Gardner la 24 ore di Le Mans del 1998. Non prima, su indicazione dei suoi stessi colleghi, di svolgere dal 1992 il ruolo di responsabile dei piloti impegnati nel Motomondiale con la International Motorcycle Riders Association. Tornando a quel Macau GP 1991, deluse a dir poco in quella circostanza Steve Hislop, ai margini della Top-10 in entrambe le heat con la Honda Britain ex-Fogarty, lasciando il podio alla RC30 condotta da Phillip McCallen, terzo di un soffio a scapito di Robert Dunlop. Vincere nello stesso anno la 24 ore di Le Mans motociclistica, il Bol d'Or, il titolo Mondiale Endurance, rendersi artefice del memorabile confronto con Steve Hislop al Senior TT con annesso record sul giro del Mountain (resistito per 7 lunghi anni), ma anche ben figurare nelle prime apparizioni di livello nel Mondiale Superbike. Già che c'era, per non farsi mancare nulla, mettere a segno una sensazionale affermazione al Gran Premio motociclistico di Macau. Di questo si rese protagonista 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐲 in un memorabile 1992. Ancor prima di diventare '𝐾𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝐶𝑎𝑟𝑙', centrò in una singola stagione questa serie di successi, oltretutto cambiando di volta in volta moto e squadre. Addirittura, in quel successo al 𝐌𝐚𝐜𝐚𝐮 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐱 𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟐, correndo con una Harris Yamaha 500cc preparata da Padgett's, indossando tuttavia la tuta... Ducati Moto Cinelli del Mondiale Superbike! Per suggellare quell'incredibile 1992, al Circuito da Guia '𝐹𝑜𝑔𝑔𝑦' dovette battere nell'aggregata delle due heat il giapponese Toshihiko Honma (Yamaha YZR 500 semi-Factory) e James Whitham, suo compagno di squadra per l'occasione. Senza farsi mancare la conquista della pole position e, al tredicesimo giro della prima manche, in 2'33"94 a 143,01 km/h il nuovo record sul giro, primo in assoluto ad infrangere il muro del 2'34". Nella prima Heat Fogarty riuscì a distanziare Honma e Whitham di oltre 10" dopo un deciso sorpasso sul giapponese alla Mandarin Oriental Bend nel corso del dodicesimo giro, mentre nella seconda si dovette accontentare del terzo posto, preceduto nell'ordine proprio da Honma e Whitham. La somma dei tempi delle due manche consegnò a Fogarty il successo del Gran Premio e l'opportunità di coronare un magico 1992. Following a brief Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period, the race resumed, and #11 Luke continued to extend his lead. However, drama unfolded as the 2nd-place #8 Dino BEGANOVIC made contact with the wall at the same corner. The battle for the lead intensified after the green flag waved. With 8 laps remaining, #10 Paul ARON experienced a crash, prompting a red flag and necessitating extensive track cleaning and repairs. #6 Charlie WURZ narrowly avoided a collision with the spinning car but suffered a lockup and gearbox damage, forcing him out of the race. Simultaneously, #15 Josep MARTI [5] endured a damaged front wing and a deflated front right tire. Upon the race restart with 4 laps to go, #11 Luke BROWNING displayed outstanding defensive driving. #27 Dennis HAUGER [2] seized the opportunity to overtake #9 Gabriele MINI [3] at Mandarin, and nearly taking the lead at Lisboa. However, the race kicked off with an impressive start from pole position holder #48 R.MARCIELLO, leading the pack in his yellow AMG. The early laps witnessed a fierce battle for the third spot, featuring #40 E. MORTARA [3] and #32 S. VAN DER LINDE [7]. On lap 7, #41 C. HASAE gained 2 positions in his R8, capitalising on an incident between the 2 Porsches in front of him, #27 K. ESTRE and #22 E. BAMBER, as they battled into Lisboa. Following from behind, #52 W. CHEN understeered into the tire wall, prompting a 2-lap safety car period. Race resumed with 7 laps to go, a twist of fate saw 2nd place #77 M. ENGEL [4] encountered mechanical issues, allowing 1st place #48 R.MARCIELLO to secure a 2s lead on the rest of the field. With 5 laps to go, #32 S. VAN DER LINDE peeled off into the pit lane in the midst of defending his 3rd position, rejoining after a brief stop at the back [5]. In the final laps, the top front pack remained unchanged. Observing the GT cars, each over 2 meters wide, threading through the narrow Macau Guia Circuit was a heart-pounding spectacle. The high-speed action, particularly through the hilly sections with mere inches between the cars and the walls, provided an exhilarating experience.
