There’s a good chance this post might trigger a few people. But I really want to start out by saying, I am not trying to take a dump on anyone here. That’s not the purpose of this post. What you see in the first four photos is a refret that was done on a customers guitar. Now to give some perspective, the person who did the refret charged 50% less than what I charge to do the job. I charge $800 AUD Inc GST for a Nickel refret on a Rosewood board without binding and including a new bone nut also cut in the PLEK. The guitar also gets a full PLEK setup as standard (we charge $329 plus strings for that by itself). The person who did the refret charged $400 from what I was told. Sadly the customer wasn’t happy with the refret and ended up going to another two guys to dress the frets to get a better result. Not sure what he paid for their work. The owner is a really nice guy and he decided to bring it to me for a PLEK setup to sort out the fret dress best as possible. The second fret dress was actually pretty good so I just needed to do a little tidying up on the PLEK to get it great. We had a good discussion about things and he pointed out that he’s spent about the same now as what it would have cost to have me refret it in the first place. The last six photos are of some similar jobs I have completed recently for comparison. I’m not saying “I’m the best and everyone else is rubbish!”. I just pointing out that price wise, we are not at the bottom of the market for a reason. A refret is not just a refret like many other things in life. If you know someone who does better work than us for less, then that’s great. I honestly think that’s cool. And I get that people offering highly affordable repairs can be seen as a service that’s good for the budget constrained. On the bench today is another from the student union at St George's university. It's a "Vintage" brand VRS100... the "VRS" is clearly a nod to PRS, whose guitar designs it is based upon! A full service and set up, plus a new selector switch, was needed to get it playing great again. Vintage started out as a low cost budget brand, with accordingly low-spec instruments. However later on they employed the not inconsiderable skills of guitar guru Trev Wilkinson to upgrade the brand's image and appeal. As a result, Vintage guitars are now a strong player in the low to mid range guitar market, and have recently even launched their own Custom Shop, so you can get the exact specs you want! This Searls Guitar was purchased by a customer in pretty bad shape. The previous owner/s had tried to do some fretwork on it and made a bit of a mess. So the current owner asked if I could get it sorted out which I was happy to do. I started by defretting the guitar and replaning the fingerboard in the PLEK. The owner opted for a clean 12” radius on this one. After that I installed some 2.79mm Jescar Stainless Steel frets and put it back in the PLEK for a light fret dress. Fast forward a bunch of hand work and here’s the finished product. This scalloped shredding half Warmoth half Jackson Soloist came in for cavity modification to make room for a switch that “toggles” horizontally when holding the instrument. Instead of moving the mini toggle and drilling to make room, I had the idea of using a box type import switch, but Bryan had a modification to the standard Switchcraft that worked perfectly! With all the lugs on one side of the switch, we achieved the goal without moving components around or drilling and filling. This instrument is getting Plek’d and it’s comfy scallops are gonna shred even more!
I'm super-pleased with how this crack came together! The one next to it was repaired years after it started opening, so grume and gunk got in. This one we closed up in the same 12 month period as it appeared. Step 1: hydrate Step 2: Work in titebond into the crack, and lay a line of beveled cleats beside the old line. Step 3: Scrape down curled up finish, sand a little dip with 2000 grit. Step 4: CA glue fill, and level/polish to a shine. Remember to humidify your instruments in the winter. On the bench today is this early '70s Gibson Les Paul Deluxe, in need of a new nut. But not just that! Removing the old nut revealed some nastiness beneath (caused by both age and work by previous hitherto unknown guitar techs) that needed fettling to create a good seating for the new item, as is often the way with old guitars. Never fear.. this one is now back up to scratch and should sound and play great for many more years to come. The "Deluxe" nomenclature in this case denotes the use of "mini" humbucking pickups, which as the name suggests are smaller in dimension than the more usual pickups you'd find on a Les Paul. Refurbished Höfner Club 50 (66’) with an unusually elaborately decorated headstock. Neck was broken at the heel and control board was jammed and worn out beyond repair. Improved the neck joint using a self-locking action to avoid depending on a flat glue joint as in the original solution. Fret were halfway loose and were fixed with CA and leveled. Changed the ugly white plastic tuner knob, to an old perloid original. A new original Höfner control board plus PU:s, the guitar sounds as good as new.. #hofnerguitars #vintageguitar #guitarrepairshop
