For sale at the site! This is a 1979 Yamaha SL-500 Studio Lord electric guitar — very much a nice-grade LP clone. It’s wearing flats at the moment but has plenty of girth and snap and, most importantly it handles like a great Paul, too! This one has had a lot of good work done to it by Micah Plante who does work near Bristol, VT. He’s @planteguitarco if you want to check him out! He routed-out the back of the guitar to give it weight relief and also did a beautiful refret job for the owner. Just finished up doing some modifications to this 1979 Yamaha Les Paul for my friend @shadow_of_eli . I’ve seen plenty of Japanese Les Paul copies from this era but never a Yamaha. I moved the selector switch down by the knobs and added a stutter switch in its place. Swapped the pickups with some @lindyfralin.pickups and of course made a brass nut for it. Did the nuts-and-bolts changes last night. Removed doomed wiring and ceramic bridge/neck pickups, put in double cream overwound #alnico V humbuckers (14k br, 8k neck). Will wire it up this weekend and hope to call it ‘done.’ Oh, also had to replace the jackplate - the old one cracked and the pilot holes were way off. Quickly created my own - cut some #basswood squares and drilled a hole for the 1/4” output. Painted on some wood glue to strengthen it then dipped in #polyeurethane to give it a more finished look. Will need to smooth out the edges with a file. Here is the only picture of my second guitar, pic three here. . Another catalog special, this Les Paul copy came out of the Sears & Roebuck, Wish Book catalog. It was a cherry sunburst and at the time I priced the coveted ‘59 Les Paul for around 6K, so Sears it was. . This guitar quickly met its demise. My first band, where the last pic was taken, practiced in Jim Lee’s barn. We met there on weekends in the middle of winter, circled around a kerosene heater. It was freezing, we could see our breath as we played iron man, purple haze and the usual first band songs. So, the neck ended up warping, I took it out of its case too soon when I got back home. Kaput. . Dan Dimitri was the other guitarists in the band. Dan invited me in after seeing me carting my guitar through the halls of Holicong and also taught me my first power chords. He took the last pic in this series, years later he was tragically hit by a car in Philly and died. Some fine tuning on this Burny Super Grade Les Paul. I recrowned and polished the flattened and worn frets for a smoother feel and better intonation. The overall level was good on these frets but tops were flattened and grooved from years of heavy play. Next I reshaped and polished the nut. This is something I just started doing which doesn’t improve playability but I like to think of it as the cherry on top of a setup. Those little things make a big difference in my eyes even if just for aesthetics. The bridge pickup kept sinking in on this one even though the threads in the screw and baseplate feet were fine. I added a nut and put some heat shrink lined with marine grade glue around the entire thing for a heftier grip on that screw to prevent this from ever happening again.
