Drift Into Darkness - Ohio Pass, Gunnison National Forest Colorado. I love this image, it’s one of my favorite autumn images hands down. I heard a great quote once, “Landscape imagery is not about what’s in the frame, it’s about what you leave out.” Over the years I’ve noticed my level of attention to detail increase…being able to hone in on the perfect composition. I love the depth in this image, how your eyes are immediately drawn to the clean and aesthetic aspens, but soon move to the juxtaposition of the towering granite walls in the background graced with groves of distant aspens and pine. Your eye moves around the image, bottom to top, left to right, that’s what you want. Hiking only two miles in, luckily these aspens weren’t too far off trail, and when I noticed this canopy opening of clean aesthetic trunks, I knew there was a way to frame it. It almost appears as if the aspens are glowing doesn’t it…well that’s because these trunks are facing west, therefore absorbing the last bit of twilight light. With a multi-second exposure, the camera is able to soak up that soft blue hour light, a stunning contrast if you know where to look before darkness sets in. Middle bridge at Blue Mesa Reservoir back in 2022 when travel was much easier. 📸: Nikon L35AF 🎞️: Kodak Ektar 100 “The unexpected closure of the bridge, which links Montrose and Gunnison, left people stranded on either side of the closure, including a group of school kids whose only options to join their classmates in Gunnison were to face the rolling caps of Colorado’s largest reservoir or take a seven-hour journey to school one-way over precarious mountain passes. “It is very cold in the morning — 20-something degrees, and so everyone was in their snowsuits with a lifejacket on,” said Kendal Rota, a mother of three who used to drive about a dozen students who live near Sapinero and Cimarron to school on a minibus before the crack was discovered.” @thecoloradosun “Travel is opening up on a dirt county road that circumnavigates the damaged U.S. 50 bridge at Blue Mesa Reservoir, cutting detour times by several hours. So far, traffic on County Road 26, referred to locally as the Lake City Cutoff, is limited to “local, essential travel” for certain hours of the day. Travel on that dirt road is open for half-hour periods and led by a pilot car, according to a press release from the Colorado Department of Transportation.” @coloradopublicradio “Gunnison Valley Health (GVH) receives a good deal of its medical supplies from the west, said Marketing and Communications Director Joelle Ashley. Mariah transitioned to life in heaven in 2021 but her legacy of positivity and kindness lives on. 🌎🌍🌏Happy Earth Day🌎🌏🌍 A day late… but hey, everyday is Earthday! Here are a couple of snaps from the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River from our trips there in 2023. If you are into geology, there’s a lot to see here! Over the last 15 million years the Gunnison River has been carving the Black Canyon out of the various sediments, different rocks, and layers that had built up over nearly 2 billion years. Some of the exposed rocks in the canyon are estimated to be over 1.7 billion years old… some of the oldest exposed formations on the planet!! Not to mention the “painted wall” is the tallest sheer cliff in Colorado! And some other history in the last slide. As we stopped for lunch on the lower float we were able to take a short hike to check out the “Eagle Rock Shelter” Some of the findings from archaeologists show that inhabitants lived in the area over 13,000 years ago. They estimate the paintings to date back to 7000 B.C. Earth is a pretty cool place to live! Take care of her! 🌲❤️🌎 Come with us to the Gunnison this August. Following the closure of Highway 50 between Gunnison and Montrose closely. This action severs a route that is vital to the economy and safety of communities in SD5, particularly in Gunnison and Hinsdale counties, and highlights the need for increased funds for infrastructure in rural Colorado. On one day in 2018 there were over 4,600 trips made along this route. Unfortunately, situations like this one are all too common in rural Colorado. Highway 133 near Somerset was shut down for several weeks last year, I-70 through Glenwood Canyon continues to be a challenge. These closures put community health, safety, and economic vitality at risk, and it is time we address the problem. The bipartisan infrastructure bill is an important national step and I hope to see dollars from it to help address this problem.
