“I was in Washington in the conservation lab at the National Gallery,” said artist Wayne Thiebaud in 2019, “and they asked me if I had any tools that I used while painting. I asked for an example, and they brought out a strip from a Venetian blind that was covered with paint marks and told me that Dick Diebenkorn used it to paint with. It was both a straightedge and something he could manipulate to help draw circles or ovals. Dick liked to cut out forms in cardboard and pin them on a painting or print to figure out shapes. But he also loved to create lines in his works, all kinds of lines, all the way from rapid, threadlike thrusts to the most precise lines and thick tracks. @jillberelowitz returns to the gallery this year with a collection of new pieces. My favourite is her 'Pomegranate Tree' 🌳 cast in bronze from the moulds taken from actual branches and fruit and then assembled by Jill. It is a remarkable piece, so delicate, the burnished pomegranates reflecting the sunshine. The pomegranate is a hugely potent symbol in art and literature, first immortalised by Persephone. Lured into eating six pomegranate seeds by Hades, she was violated and condemned forever to living for six months a year in the underworld. A potent symbol of fertility, it is powerful in its duality: it embodies the light and the dark, death and blood and destruction, but also germination, the miracle of life, the tenderness of love, and the magical possibility of renewal. Trees crop up regularly in Jill's work, including a piece commissioned for Shakespeare's New Place called 'His Mind's Eye'. Another work 'Tree of Life' was displayed in the gallery last year. Trees indicate themes of life and nature's ability to persevere and renew. The pomegranate demonstrates Jill's reflections on the cyclicality of life and the miraculous healing power of nature. Taking a moment to refocus has been incredibly centering for me. Some peaceful days, nature, podcasts, and audiobooks that spark inspiration have been uplifting. Getting my hands dirty in the garden has also brought joy, reminding me of life's beautiful simplicity. Reconnecting with my art has felt equally refreshing. I've been using this time to explore new sources of inspiration and ways of doing things — I even completed a beautiful charcoal piece yesterday. I've realized how vital it is to stick to my routines, like my slow mornings and walks in nature. They're my anchors when life gets hectic. He developed a keen interest in photography and the ‘exotic' there. His travel photographs from Turkey, Spain, Palestine, Egypt, Morocco, China and India drew considerable public interest. By 1911, Courtellemont had opened the Palais de Autochromie, at 167 Boulevard Montmartre (Paris). It housed an installation workshop, a laboratory, an exhibition hall and a 250-seat room where he would often host his popular ‘projected’ lectures. He later worked with the National Geographic which published many of his autochromes and has 15 000 of his plates. In these autochromes of India by Jules Gervais-Courtellemont, you will notice the soft, muted colours that heighten the ‘exotic’ and ‘vintage’ AUTOCHROMES WERE MADE BY COATING A GLASS PLATE WITH A STICKY VARNISH AND DUSTING IT WITH A LAYER OF COLOUR DYED, TRANSLUCENT POTATO-STARCH GRAINS. THE PLATES WERE NEXT COATED WITH A LIGHT-SENSITIVE EMULSION. WHEN THE PLATE WAS INSERTED INTO A CAMERA, THE LIGHT FROM THE LENS PASSED THROUGH THE DYED STARCH GRAINS, WHICH ACTED AS COLOR FILTERS BEFORE REACHING THE EMULSION.
