Throwback circa 2016 From 4 years ago to today A LOT has happened in the black community. I wrote this song as the soundtrack for my screenplay Concrete. A drama about a female rapper whose journey takes her from cognitive dissension to conscious rapper. I don’t know if I would have written this the same way but this is what I felt through my frustrations. I wrote the script, then came the songs. This is the first video of many. Much to my surprise he finished the entire season on his own and was too cool to watch it again with me because his younger brother wanted in on it. What inspires you as a writer??? Today I was moved in the cinema when I took my kids to watch @angrybirdsmovie but before that came on a #shortfilm called #hairlove witch was amazing and tugged hard on my heartstrings. I love that as I sat in a predominately white audience they could watch images of families that look like me, overcoming relatable issues such as hair problems but of a different texture and portraying black men as determined loving fathers. Homeboy had a tattoo sleeve and dreads. Not the prim proper, shirt tucked in, low hair cut, conservative looking dad ( that white people are more comfortable with and love to love) I loved every moment of this!!! 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾That is the strength that writing has. The power to change our world and introduce new worlds to the people that we share it with. This is why I love to write💕💕💕 Speaking of power, this poem is from the book that inspired the movie or vice versa because Antwone Fisher wrote over 40 drafts of his script before 20th Century Fox bought it. His story was moving enough and they were patient enough to wait for it and had enough faith to let him write it himself. This film opened up my world to a world of child abuse and trauma I had never known before.
