“Drop that stereo before I blow your goddamn nuts off, asshole.”-Released 40 years ago today, ‘Police Academy’ is one of my favorite comedies from the 80’s and it’s very special to me as I would watch it, the sequels and the crappy TV series from the late 90’s with my grandfather. It was a great bonding time because he didn’t know English but could easily follow based on the actions happening on screen and that alone would make him laugh. I think about those moments anytime this movie or any of their sequels comes up and instantly smile. The movie centers around a group of good-hearted, but incompetent misfits who enter the police academy, but the instructors there are not going to put up with their pranks. The movie was written/directed by Hugh Wilson, who knew how to provide stupid/silly situations and great one liners that actually offer some great laughs. The movie has an abundance of great gags that are quite hilarious, but my favorite has to be the one including the gay leather bar Blue Oyster, and the song kills me every time it comes on. It’s one that appeared in a handful of the sequels and it always delivers. I could hear that song in any other movie or show and instantly think of things. . . Steven Gutenberg is so charismatic as Mahoney, bringing some excellent man child energy that’s perfect for this movie that prides itself in juvenile humor that works. He’s believable as a leader and you can see why the misfits of the academy are drawn to him. Michael Winslow as the human beat box Larvell Jones is a scene stealer. There’s so many moments that one can highlight, such as using his voice to pretend play a video game, doing multiple gun impressions and scaring the crap out of people among a few others. David Graf as the trigger happy Tackleberry kills me, pretty much any outburst he has is gold, because at times it feels like he might too dangerous to be a cop, but is also like you definitely want him in the force backing you up. Bubba Smith as the imposing Hightower provides some subtle elite comedy such as when he has fears of driving, and Mahoney has to teach him. It’s a great overall scene. . CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS

Positive representation of African Americans in the media has always been little to none, and more specifically, Black women are highly misrepresented in the media. Oftentimes we are put in boxes such as the sassy best friend trope in which Black female characters are the “side-kick” of the white main character. In cases where Black women are the main characters, they are usually battling with hardships in which they are trying their very best to survive. When I was a young girl, I remember reading the “American Girl” novels.
