Kapu Moe! “The first thing you will hear is the sound of the drums, distant at first, then louder. You will sense a foul and musky odor in the air — the smell of something that has died — and then see a long line of torch lights that grow larger and brighter. The night marchers give you fair warning to get out of their way.” In the days of ancient Hawai'i, the highest ranking chiefs traveled by procession with warriors marching ahead to warn their people that their ali'i were coming. The sound of pa'u, the blowing of the pu, the call to "Kapu Moe," to lay prostrate and do not look if you couldn't get out of the way, these were the warnings that the procession was coming. These ali'i were considered so sacred that commoners could not look upon them for fear of death. Indeed, if the shadow of one so sacred were to fall upon someone unsuspecting, his life is forfeit. Because of this, the ni'au pio, the highest born chiefs and chiefesses, often traveled by night to avoid undue interruption of daily life. It is in this tradition that the most common legend of the night marchers falls. These are the ghosts of the warriors and ali'i continuing in death as they did in life. HAUNTED MORGAN'S CORNER A group of teenagers jump in their cars and drive out to this spot in order to feel that "thrill of the haunt." They take a right turn off the Pali Highway and follow the road through the old neighborhood. Soon, the houses thin out and the road becomes dark and winding. The street lights set a hundred feet apart are not enough to push the night back and the branches of the trees take spooky shapes as the car's headlights move past. Just after the hairpin turn, the group comes to a stop on the side of the road, just before a small bridge. They turn off the engine. Everyone is quiet for a few seconds and then the silence is broken by nervous laughter. They're here to see if the place is really haunted. Royal advisor to the Kamehameha dynasty, John Papa ‘I‘i, describes Loku as a place where men and women of every kind gathered in the evenings to enjoy themselves, and such places were known from the distant past. There were two loku much frequented at the time ‘I‘i was at court, one at the corner of King and Nuuanu Streets and the other at Kauanono‘ula, located at Merchant and Alakea Streets. Some of the amusements indulged in there were hula, chants, the recitation of narratives in chant form, and the telling of legends. The ghosts of earlier participants are said to congregate in these places every evening from seven o’clock until midnight. Even the legendary night marchers are said to pass through these spaces. The Faceless Woman of Wai'alae Drive-In. In May of 1959, an article appeared on page 13 of the Honolulu Advertiser describing what witnesses say was the ghost of a woman with no face in the ladies' restroom of the Waialae Drive-In Theatre. According to Bob Krauss, author of the column, "In One Ear," in which the tale of the faceless ghost appeared, the movies playing the night of the first witness's account were "Love Slaves of the Amazons" and "Monolith Monsters."
