211 South Federal Highway 1926 Federal Market Jorge Reyes Since 1935, this structure has been used as the longest continually running market in Palm Beach County. The building was owned by William Morris and called the Morris Cash Grocery. The name intended to let one know that the establishment could not offer to extend credit during those financially difficult periods. It served as a local market for all the surrounding workers’ cottages when there weren’t many stores in the area, and supplied special quality bread for the large Finnish population. In later years, it became a meeting place for local beach goers, residents and tourists alike. Some older customers gladly give an oral history of the area and a glimpse into simpler times. Jorge bought the market from Morris in 2016 promising it would remain as is which he was content to do. The little store with two aisles carrying a wide selection of goods has distinctive tin embossed ceilings and original wooden floors that have always existed with no sub-floor. The structure withstood the historic 1928 hurricane and each one thereafter. The building, with its sunny yellow clapboard siding and double porch is said to be so solidly built that workers strain trying to drill a screw into the front doors or window frames. There is an apartment above where the original owner most likely lived and another to the side of the store. Jorge’s preference for older things and his friendly, easygoing manner make him the perfect successor to this historically unique neighborhood gathering spot. One of our main goals for the storefront area of the house was to give it a New York city loft vibe. And you can’t do loft without an exposed brick wall! We looked at all sorts of different options for adding one in. First thought was to do real brick, but realized we needed additional foundational support so the wall didn’t collapse. We debated picking up some free brick off of craigslist and cutting it in half, but thousands of cuts and then installation was a bit daunting. Then we ordered some real thin brick veneer samples, but cost wise it was prohibitive. Next was some foam brick panels, but they didn’t look that realistic and cost just as much as the veneers. We found a product at Home Depot that was only $28 a sheet and that was the winner! Super easy to install, all we needed was a Brad nailer. Now comes the creative part, aging and distressing the brick to make it look real. We are currently finishing grouting between the panels, we ended up cutting them so that they had interconnecting tiles because we were having trouble trying to get it level across an uneven wall. Tomorrow morning we are having the hardwood floors in the main room refinished! 🛠 Mr. Anthonie also helped at our Shoreline home - he’s fantastic and definitely recommend. At one point the floors were covered up with linoleum and can’t wait to see them brought back to life. Tyler also finished installing faux brick wall panels, we just need to finish grouting and distressing them. Having fun digging into more historical research on our home. 🏠 The previous owner had a few historical photos framed so I knew they existed, but she didn’t leave them behind. I got in touch with Puget Sound archives at @bellevuecollege and they were able to locate three photos in their files. Greenwood & 85th in the late 1920s was the official Seattle city limit, with an active streetcar line. Small mom and pop grocery stores were often located just a few blocks off the streetcar so commuters could grab supplies on their way home, pre-big box grocery store days. My grandfather had a dental business in the Holmes Build building on 85th and Greenwood (above the Chase Bank) from the 1930s-1970s and my family has a historical photo of the streetcar at that intersection as well. Over Christmas my Aunt Val, who is the unofficial family historian, gave us a wood cafe chair that was used in restroom in the building at that time. In the first photo you can see the grocery store was called Wade’s Grocery, and we plan on replicating the logo somewhere in the house. I’ve been staring at the first photo a lot, and just noticed that you can see a guy’s face in the window in the right.
