So today I showed up- with all five kids in tow- to the follow-up appointment from my son’s tonsillectomy. Stover was a man who only had an 8th grade education, falsified his birth certificate and enlisted in the military at 14. It was during the Korean War and the military needed the numbers and he looked like a kid, but they took him anyway and he never told anyone his real age. He served 4 years, took that 8th grade education, and got a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering and was a Professional Engineer for 40 years, working with the Philippine Air Force, for Pan-Am, the Saudi Air Force and many more. He dodged anti-American terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka, visited over 50 countries, wrote 6 books, earned a Masters at Vanderbilt University, and then ultimately, secured his rightful place in American history and his legacy when he founded an organization that protected veterans’ benefits and rights for those who had enlisted underage (under the legal age by forging documents), helping them all to sleep better at night, knowing their benefits would now never be stripped away. But for me, he was just my Dad. My friend. I am amazed at the difference it has made simply carrying my planner with me around the house. I have kept on track with recording my notes, journaling, and logs.
