Last year this caudiciform stopped growing when it had produced two perfect heart shaped leaves (Slide for more pics) I noticed today they had died off and a new vine had started growing so I snipped off those papery brown leaves to press them for prosperity. 1. This morning I potted the caudiciforms that I was sent by @modern_botanic . Kathleen recommeded a potting mixture that was half compost and half horticultural grit. I’d kept the caudex in a glass with a cm of water to help rehydrate the roots and the leaves are definitely looking a little less limp from the postal journey! So many reasons to love the gram. Firstly I was tagged in a pic by @garden.pilea.ginkgo who had just stumbled across an old post of mine and found the name of this Fockea Edulis (shown left) that they had been looking for. Secondly, this reminded me to check on mine and boy has it grown, but just look at the spiral cactus! . Weirdly the spirals straightened out for a while but are beginning to twist again, anyone know why this is? . Thirdly, it reminded me of the wonderful plant community that exists here. I didn’t know myself what this caudiciform was called and saw one for sale on the @pearspring_shop stall at @greenrooms_market . I asked what its name but they weren’t exactly sure but said one of their customers would know... This turned out to be @modern_botanic so I tagged them in a post and was given the correct name in a comment which made me happy which in turn has made @garden.pilea.ginkgo happy. #whatgoesaroundcomesaround . Really pleased with how this Dioscorea Elephantipes is coming along. I was expecting it to stay dormant for much longer than it did, only a 3/4 weeks. I think I will probably have to extend the copper wire eventually but for now it’s working just fine. . On a personal note, I had a blood test today. I’d woken in a bad mood - walking round with my head in a thick dark cloud. I queued for an hour and when I was called through & greeted by the nurse, she told me I had a wonderful smile and GUESS WHAT I felt immediately better, shallow of me I know! However the dark cloud was gone and I left feeling better than I had for ages. This got me thinking, she didn’t need to say this to me, it cost nothing and yet meant so much. Small gestures like this can make an enormous difference to someone’s day. So I dare you to make someone’s day. . What a difference a week makes. Last Friday I finally got around to cutting back the old leaves of this Dioscorea Elephantipes. (See stories) I was surprised to find a new stem emerging today only a week later. It feels like it’s only been dormant a month. With the leaves slowly starting to fade from around mid June, It wasn’t until the beginning of July that they had completely turned and only last week that I cut back the old, dry, dead stems. . Any now I have to decide what to do to create something for it to climb up... last time it had a stick and grew up but I feel it need more of a ‘trellis’ so I can spread its wings, so to speak.
