The biggest question by far when I've sold cold weather plants this spring is what do you do about all the pests as an organic gardener?! These cold hardy plants like broccoli, cabbage, and greens are a magnet for aphids, slugs, and cabbage moths. The best way I have found to fight these pests is with tulle! I have low tunnel hoops that I cover with tulle and it does wonders for keeping unwanted bugs out. Since all these plants don't require pollination, they are able to stay covered. Tulle is also significantly cheaper than the garden netting you will usually see used. I also sprinkle some diatomaceous earth to help deter rollie pollies. My boys are great at relocating them as well haha. Does this keep every bug away from your plants? No, but a saying I've found most organic gardeners believe is that if something isn't eating your garden, your garden isn't part of the ecosystem. Never mind the bit of damage on one of the leaves, this volunteer lettuce hit the spot last night as a salmon salad. - I always let at least one head of lettuce go to seed, and I’m grateful to my past self for letting this beauty reseed itself. I didn’t have to do anything but wait for it to form a head. - This was grown in shade, but my full sun lettuce is about 60% bolted. No matter; I’ll let a few go to seed again and have a nice crop of lettuce through fall and spring.

Wie sich der Garten im laufe des Lebens Wandelt. Am Anfang sollte es einfach sein. Rasen und noch mehr Rasen wurde angelegt. Ganz schnell haben wir gemerkt es fehlt Farbe. Blumen und Bäume aber günstig muß es sein 😉 Selbstversorgung was ist das? Gemüsegarten muß her. Aber klein am Anfang! Das erst Kind ist da. Entfernen von allem was giftig ist und der Gemüsegarten wurde größer. Zweites und drittes Kind sind gefolgt. Der Nutzgarten wächst und wächst. Mittlerweile haben wir über 20 Obstbäume gepflanzt. Diversen Gemüsebeete in verschiedenen Größen angelegt. Jährlich brüten wir Hühner und Wachteln aus Eiern aus. Nymphensittiche beleben den Garten mit ihrem Gesang. Die Katze hält seit Jahren die Mäuse fern. 6 Bienenvölker produzieren tollen Honig und der Gartenpapa stellt auch Met/Honigwein her. There are two distinct areas in the (now) meadow that have given us an authentic, glorious cover crop of clover. It’s the same areas we cleaned up baler twine over the winter so its kind of a no brainer we are reaping the benefits of feed put in these areas for the pastured animals over the years. Crimson clover started the show, helping the pollinators get going. Now we have Alsike clover, Arrowleaf clover and Hare’s foot clover joining the work force doing their nitrogen fixing thing just as the Crimson clover’s shift is ending. Get a plant ID app and you can pay closer attention too!! Being patient to let them all be what they needed to be and being eager to learn from them has been an immense reward. The visual intoxication of the variety of clovers as they come and go while being hosts to pollinators that are also wide in variety and function is something I wholeheartedly recommend. It’s only a little thing, but I harvested a few spinach leaves from the garden to add to the veggie curry I was making for today. We are having a little family meal today to mark the passing of a wonderful friend, with one of his favourite side dishes: Peshwari Naan, which has become one of Bean’s favourite treats. I also made a veggie curry, which I added the spinach to, and a simple but tasty pilaf. März 2022- Hochbeet und anlegen von Beeten Teil1 Der März, war der Grundstein für die Außengestaltung. Zuerst wurde ein 4x1,5 m großes Hochbeet errichtet und 7.3.22 die Kompletten Beete neu angelegt. Dazu wurden teils neue Pflanzen, aber auch Bestand neu platziert.
