Happy 20th anniversary to Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, the long-awaited third installment of the Terminator franchise set nine years after the events of Judgement Day and follows a now-older John Connor (Nick Stahl) who is living off the grid and forced into another plot to prevent Skynet from devastating all human life when a new Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) arrives to protect him and old associate Katharine Brewster (Claire Danes) from a more-advanced machine known as the T-X (Kristana Loken). The pros are the more sophisticated GCI effects work put into the action and Terminators, Arnold's continued commitment as well as the decent performances from Stahl and Danes, and the somber conclusion that I've come to appreciate. However, I dislike the film as whole for feeling like a retread of the Judgement Day formula (which would further be repeated in Genysis and Dark Fate), the overt comedic tone found in situations like the Terminator acquiring his leather clothing from a stripper during a dance number, a primary villain in T-X that should have stood out a little more than being another T-1000, and the cheesy and haphazard writing that disregards the first two films rules with the "judgement day is inevitable" plot thread and no fresh ideas beyond that. It works only because of the action but it was a monumental disappointment for me considering how this came years after a game-changing sequel with a stronger and substantial plot and fully developed characters. It's merely a cash-grab and not an advance of the story if anything.
