If you are a regular reader of our updates you may well have seen the images we shared of this E-Type as we stripped it down. If you did see the photos the car appeared in fairly good order and was running and driving when brought into us. The owner knew that to get it to the standard he wanted the only way to go was a full nut and bolt restoration. We have now had the bodyshell dipped to remove all paint and filler. Although we were expecting the body to require significant bodywork we have to admit we were surprised by the extent of poor historic repairs which were rather well hidden under the paint. It is quite impressive what can be hidden under seemingly nice bodywork. We will now set about repairing the bodywork as required. The floors, rear wings and sills will all require attention. It is also vital when carrying out this kind of work to attend to the areas that cannot be seen as well as what is on the surface. This photo shows a lovely pair of Jaguar E-Types outside our workshop awaiting collection. They share many similarities at a glance but are actually very different cars. The car in the foreground is a 1966 Series 1 4.2 litre fixedhead coupe. The easiest way to identify it is by its enclosed headlights, the slim indicators mounted above the bumpers and the gently sloping roofline. Notably it features a 4.2 litre straight six XK engine which, although developed somewhat over the years, traces its routes back to the 3.4 litre unit fitted in the XK120. In the background is a Series 3 E-Type 2+2. This was the iteration of the E-Type produced between 1971 and 1974. These are most easily spotted by the open headlights, indicators mounted below the bumpers, flared wheel arches, more upright windscreen and more steeply sloped rear roof line. The Series 3 is actually a bigger car than the Series 1 with significantly longer doors allowing taller drivers to get in and out far more easily. The biggest change was the 5.3 litre V12 engine. The whole character of S3 E-Type is very different to that of the S1. Over the past few updates we have shared photos of a Jaguar E-Type subject to a full nut and bolt restoration on. With the car fully disassembled and the body away to be chemically dipped we are still able to make progress by refurbishing some of the sub-assemblies. The engine has been stripped and is in the process of being machined. As shown in our past two updates, the rear differential has been stripped and rebuilt. We now have all the components back from being powder coated and the differential has been refitted into its housing. Next, the rear subframe will be rebuilt ready to be fitted back into the car. On the bench, in the background, you can see the freshly powder-coated subframe, the half-shafts and the hubs along with other parts for the rear suspension. We undertake all aspects of restoration work on Jaguar XK120s, XK140s, XK150s and E-Type. We offer a range of upgrades and improvements for classic Jaguars most of which are aimed at practicality and reliability. Some of our improvements though are purely aimed at comfort and making your classic as enjoyable to be in as possible. Our audio systems are just such an upgrade. We offer a variety of stereo and audio setups to suit your individual needs and fit bespoke solutions depending on what the driver wants. Our goal is to provide good-quality sound whilst not impacting on the look of the car. As such we are well-practiced at fitting stereo head units and speakers in hidden locations. Pictured here is a set of good-quality component speakers mounted onto the boot flap of an XK140 we are currently restoring. The car is having the head unit hidden behind the dashboard drawer and another set of hidden speakers in the footwell. With the speakers fitted flush to the panel it means that the trim can be run over them leaving the panel looking completely original. In last month's workshop update, we shared a photo of a lovely metallic pastel blue XK120 OTS which is undergoing a full nut and bolt restoration on the ramp having its fluids put in. A month on we have another XK120 OTS at the same point in the restoration process. This car is finished in British Racing Green and is a real contrast to the blue car but no less lovely. We are carrying out a full nut and bolt restoration on this car for a customer who lives in mainland Europe. We do a lot of work for international customers, particularly those living close by in Europe. Being based on the south coast of the UK near Portsmouth we are very easy to get to from the various ferries from Europe and the Channel Islands. Be it for servicing, upgrades or full restoration we are always delighted to have a few left-hand drive cars such as this in the workshop. This XK120 has been built with practicality and reliability in mind. The driver is quite tall so has opted for our extended pedal box conversion. This XK120 OTS or roadster has featured in our posts a few times over the past year. It has been undergoing a full nut and bolt restoration and has been tastefully upgraded along the way. The car now features disc brakes to the front, a five-speed gearbox and rack and pinion steering. Additionally, the car has electric power steering, an alternator upgrade, electronic ignition and an electric cooling fan. The engine has been built to a fast-road specification and the suspension has been upgraded with polyurethane bushes, adjustable shock absorbers and an upgraded anti-roll bar so the handling will match the power delivery. When put together this package of upgrades will make this XK120 reliable and fantastic fun to drive. The XK120 in standard form is a wonderful thing to drive but modified like this they move up to the next level. Pictured here the car is on our four-post ramp being prepared for start-up. All the unions, nuts and bolts will be checked and then fluids will be put into the car. One of the defining features of the XK120 and XK140 dropheads and fixedheads is their stunning walnut-veneered dashboards and door cappings. These give the cars a real feeling of class and quality. If these items are not done well though it can really let a restoration down. Poorly fitted panels with big gaps or switches which do not line up well in the holes really catch the eye in a negative way. You can spend a fortune on the best veneering but if the wood does not fit properly then the finished product will never look right. To ensure every aspect of our cars looks top notch we trial fit and alter the woodwork before veneering. This allows us to get the best possible fit for all parts and avoids the risk of damaging the veneer trying to alter parts later on. We will also build up the dashboard with all the switches and bezels at this point to ensure everything fits properly. As you can see we take every opportunity to ensure our restorations are top class. As many of you will know our ethos is to build cars to be used. We focus on providing practicality and reliability within a stunningly restored car. With the addition of sensible upgrades XKs and E-Types can be enormously enjoyable and reliable to drive whilst retaining their classic character and look. More than this, modern build standards, paintwork and rust protection allow us to build cars which can withstand the elements much better than they did in period. In our last workshop update, we shared a photo of this Jaguar E-Type right at the beginning of being stripped down for restoration. It is an early 3.8 litre Series 1 Coupe which the owner has asked us to fully restore and build him the car of his dreams. It is an honour to be trusted with such a project and to have to opportunity to create the car someone has longed for since childhood. As you will see from the photo the car has now been completely stripped back to the body tub. We are very pleased with the condition of the shell and are confident that there is little rust in it. Despite this in order to carry out a restoration to the very highest standards the body must go back to bare metal and inside ever section of the car needs to be inspected, repaired and treated to prevent future corrosion. With the car now complete stripped, the shell and subframes will have all the oil paint and filler removed before being coated in a rust protector. We could not resist sharing this shot of our fully restored Aluminium Jaguar XK120 OTS. It had just been through the workshop for its winter check-up and was out for an after-dark test drive and just looked stunning all lit up. This car is a very early XK120 manufactured from aluminium over an ash frame before Jaguar moved to steel production. Charmingly it is chassis number 120. Some of you may have seen the car out and about over the past few years. It was used at the Goodwood Revival a few years ago in the Freddie March Spirit of Aviation enclosure to be displayed next to a DC3 aircraft. Goodwood went on to borrow the car to create some of their marketing material for the Revival so whenever you see an XK120 in one of the Revival adverts it is probably this one. More recently we had the car on display at the Motoring Literary and Art Festival. This shot is of the ongoing Jaguar XK140 drophead coupe restoration which we have shared in the past. Much progress has been made and the car is approaching being ready for start-up. We will get the car running and tested mechanically before it goes to be trimmed. That way if we have any issues which require rectification work we do not risk marking or damaging beautiful new trim. Pictured here the windscreen is being fitted. This is a tricky process, especially with the split-screen cars, and is a task which requires both patience and experience. We often receive phone calls from XK owners who have had modern windscreen fitters attempt this task and fail, or worse break the glass. Unfortunately, most modern glass fitters simply are not equipped to fit an XK windscreen any more than we are set up to fit the screen into a modern F-Pace. It is noteworthy when undertaking a restoration that we always have the windows made to measure to ensure they are just the right size for the car. No two XKs are quite the same and a one size fits all approach just doesn’t cut it. We are just getting started on a full nut and bolt restoration of this Jaguar E-Type. It is a 3.8 litre Series 1 though not one of the very early OBL cars. We adore the E-Type Coupe shape, and it is an honour to be trusted with this magnificent car. This is a complete car in fairly good condition but when it was previously restored it was not done to the standards we expect today. We are therefore carefully stripping it down and cataloguing the parts before they are refurbished. The body will be taken back to bare metal and inspected before any necessary repair work is undertaken. The owner of this car has always wanted an E-Type Coupe and has a very clear idea of the specifications required. We have been looking for some time for a suitable project car and although this one is arguably a little too good to be restored there are a number of advantages to buying the best possible restoration project you can. Having a largely complete car is a huge advantage when undertaking a restoration and can be a significant cost saving down the line. This lovely picture was sent to us by a long-standing customer who is enjoying a trip around Spain in their XK140. We fully restored this car a few years back and it is the ideal specification for this kind of touring. It benefits from electric power steering, a five-speed gearbox, front disc brakes, an electric cooling fan and much more. Our intention when we build these kinds of XKs is to create a car which looks every bit a charming 1950s classic but is comfortable and reliable to use in modern driving conditions. We firmly believe that classic cars should be used so do all we can to make them as enjoyable to use as possible. The car is currently taking part in La Rioja & Spanish Laplands Tour organised by Classics on the Road for the XK Club and E-Type Club. This is a trip focused on enjoying the car with great drives, nice hotels, good food and most of all good company with fellow classic Jaguar owners. We have shared photos of this Jaguar XK140 drophead coupe restoration in the past so we thought it was about time for an update. Last time we wrote about this car the engine and gearbox were just being fitted into the chassis. We like to get the chassis fully built-up including fuel and brake lines, suspension and engine and gearbox before refitting the painted body. This minimises the risk of paint damage to the beautiful bodywork when it comes to finishing the car off. In the background you can of the photo you can see the bodyshell which was fitted and set up on the body before being painted. At this point, we fit everything from the hood and windows to the fuel filler flap and bumper irons. We endeavour to drill all holes and make all alterations before the bodyshell is painted. The body can now be lifted up on our two-post lift and the chassis will be rolled underneath. The body is then carefully lowered into place over the chassis allowing the body spacers to be fitted and then everything is bolted down. This lovely pair of scale models were brought in by a customer when he dropped his XK140 in for its annual service. We restored the XK140 in question back in 2012 and have maintained it ever since. It is an utterly delightful car finished in Maroon with a Biscuit interior and has been sympathetically upgraded for modern use. When it first arrived with us though it was in a rather sorry state and the paint was a rather sad and faded shade of red. Fortunately, the car was complete in almost every way which makes a full nut and bolt restoration so much easier. Starting with a full complement of original parts is far preferable to having to source lots of parts and then adapt them to fit. As you can see from the picture, these models are excellent recreations of what the car looked like before and after restoration. The model of the finished car is sublime in its attention to detail and includes the correct number plate and even features the non-standard wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel which is fitted to the real car. It is the ‘before’ model which really steals the show though. The work and attention to detail which have gone into creating this model are incredible. There are always stages of restoration that feel like significant steps forward. Reuniting a car with its engine is certainly one of them. This Jaguar XK140 has been undergoing a full nut and bolt restoration with us and we have recently finished the bodywork and removed the bodyshell from the chassis ready to be painted. We fit the bare metal body to the chassis and then build it up with doors, windows, hood and chromes to ensure everything fits before then removing it again for paint. At this point, we like to fit the engine to the rolling chassis as it avoids having to later lower it into the engine bay of a freshly painted car. The engine pictured here is the original 3.4-litre XK engine belonging to this car. It has been rebuilt to our fast road specification with a focus on low-down torque to ensure the driver can make the most of the engine without having to rev too high. The owner of this car wanted 2-inch SU carburettors fitted along with improved stainless steel exhaust manifolds which will mate to a 2-inch sports exhaust system. Time for a throwback Thursday. This one takes us way back to this pre-war-looking hand-built special. Under that rather vintage-looking body was a full XK140 chassis, engine and running gear. All the original dashboard instruments and switches were even still used and present in the car. A week or two ago we shared a post showing off our new cleaning and blasting machines. Since then, they have been put to good use for any number of projects. Pictured here is the before and after shot of a 2-inch SU carburettor which we recently rebuilt. This carburettor is one of a pair destined to be fitted to a fast road specification engine which we have just rebuilt for an XK140 drophead coupe. The XK140 in question is undergoing a full restoration and we will share more of this car in the coming weeks and months. As can be seen from the photos these carburettors were in a sorry state. They were stripped and then all the components were cleaned in our degreasing tank. After that, they were blasted in our vapour blaster before being cleaned again to ensure there was no media left in the components. With everything clean and looking nearly new, the carburettors were rebuilt using new components where required. The floats and seals have been upgraded to ethanol-resistant materials meaning that modern fuels can be used without any fear of damage. This Jaguar XK120 OTS is currently undergoing full nut and bolt restoration. The owner initially gave us the car to carry out body and chassis repairs with the intention of completing the project himself but was so impressed by our work he entrusted us with more of the rebuild. To date, we have completed the chassis and body repairs, had the body and chassis painted and built up the chassis with a number of upgrades fitted along the way and reunited the body and chassis ready for the next stage of the build. The goal is the create a very usable XK120 so the owner has opted to have our rack and pinion steering upgrade, five-speed gearbox, disc brakes and a few other tweaks made. The next stage for this car will be to start to run in the wiring and fit the chrome. Only 195 right-hand drive XK120 FHCs were produced so this is a very rare car indeed. This chassis belongs to a Jaguar XK120 OTS or “roadster”. We have featured the bodyshell in previous posts where we showed the pedal box being fitted amongst other things. We are assisting the owner with the restoration of the car which he will be completing himself. We will be returning the car to him with the painted bodyshell fitted to the built-up chassis ready for him to do all the final fitting and get running. The chassis has already had all necessary repair work done. It has also been upgraded to take rack and pinion steering and rear telescopic shock absorbers bringing it up to XK140/XK150 specification. These upgrades make such a difference to an XK120 and really modernise the driving experience. It has now been cleaned, treated and painted to offer decades of protection. We believe that classic cars should be used so we ensure that they are protected well enough that you don’t have to live in fear of wet roads. The chassis will now be built up with its suspension ready for the bodyshell to be fitted. After that the rolling project can be delivered back to its owner to be finished off. Pictured here is a Jaguar XK140 drophead coupe which is currently undergoing a full nut and bolt restoration. The bodywork has been completed and we are now setting about fitting the bodyshell up before paint. We fit all the parts to the car ahead of paint to ensure a perfect fit and to allow for any alterations or holes to be drilled ahead of the paintwork being done. This includes fitting the full door mechanisms, windows and hood frame so that we know everything lines up and operates correctly. We also fit the bumper irons and the bumpers. All these parts are stripped back to bare metal before trial fitting and are then sent for chroming after this first fit-up is done. All this work early on ensures a minimum of fettling when we come to finally assemble the car and minimises the risk of damaging new chrome or paintwork. We have a range of excellent XK140s in for sale at the moment including a restoration project. Those of you who follow these posts will recognise this Jaguar E-Type which we have been carrying out a full nut and bolt restoration on for some time now. As you can see the bonnet has now been refitted to the car for the first time which feels like a huge step forward. If you have ever handled an E-Type bonnet you will know that fitting and removing them is not for the faint-hearted. They are extremely heavy and require several people to lift. They are also rather tricky to get shimmed and lined up correctly. The biggest task over the past few weeks has been fitting the five-speed gearbox and making the alterations to suit. With the gearbox finally fitted the new stainless steel exhaust system with long manifolds from our friends and fellow HCVA founding partners at Classic Fabs could be fitted. Next, the wiring to the engine was finalised, fluids added and the engine was ready for start-up. This XK120 is undergoing a full restoration with the owner doing much of the work himself. We are helping along the way in areas he doesn’t want to tackle himself, namely repainting the chassis and bodywork and rebuilding the engine. We will be helping with a number of other stages along the way and are always happy to be flexible and lend a hand when needed. Though perfectly saveable this chassis was in a pretty poor state. The right-hand front side had been completely patched over from the cross member to the front wishbone mount. This allowed the material underneath to continue to rot. This whole section had to be carefully cut out and replaced. Our fabricator has now moved on to repairing the front suspension mounts. We wanted to share an image of this XK120 fixedhead coupe for not reason other than that it is absolutely stunning. We restored this car over ten years ago and it has spent much of its life in Scotland. Despite it living a long way from us, the owner returns it to us for servicing and storage so we still know the car very well. When it was restored, the owner opted for a very impressive specification. The car is fitted with a 3.8-litre engine from an XK150 S. This was rebuilt to a fast road specification and still breaths through its original set to triple 2” SU carburettors. This is mated to a five-speed gearbox and a limited-slip differential. To handle this extra power delivery the car has been upgraded with disc brakes, telescopic shock absorbers all around, polyurethane suspension bushes and an upgraded anti-roll bar. The original steering box has been replaced with our rack and pinion upgrade making the handling sharp and precise. Inside, the battery box behind the seats has been removed allowing the bucket seats to go back much further than the original. The bulkhead has been moved away from the driver and a pedal box has been fitted. Finally, a smaller diameter steering wheel was fitted. It is always a very special day when we are finally able to hand a full restoration over to a customer. This XK150 was all the more special as it had been delayed due to a number of factors stemming from the pandemic. Those of you who follow our updates may well recognise the car from previous posts. Pictured here is General Manager Ian Mills and the cars new owner as they were going through the finer point of the car. We always spend a good hour showing new owners around the cars ensuring they are familiar with the switches, gauges and how to check fluid levels etc. This is all the more important when the car has been upgraded as there are often additional switches and fuse boards. This XK150 drophead coupe looks stunningly finished in Pacific Blue with a blue hood and grey interior. It has been tastefully upgraded for modern use leaving the car looking standard to the casual eye but providing improved performance, reliability and comfort. If you have seen us at a classic car show over the last few years you will most likely have seen the chassis of this XK150 3.8 S restoration. The car is a very rare original UK, right-hand drive drophead couple and as such is one of fewer than 50 such examples built. There is some debate as to the exact production figures but it is believed that it could have been as few as 19 cars were built in this specification. The car was found beautifully preserved, though slightly rotten, some years ago and we started the process of restoring it as a demonstrator. We had such interest in the car as a rolling chassis, and so much other work to be going on with, that it has remained as a chassis for many years now and has been used at countless shows. Finally, after so many years the time has come to reunite the chassis with its now beautifully painted body. The car is finished in its original British Racing Green and in all other respects, we are keeping the car as original as possible. Lowering the body over the fully built-up chassis with the engine and gearbox installed is our preferred method of fitting. This minimises the risk of damaging the bodywork at a later stage. We have looked at this stunning XK140 drophead coupe at various points during its full nut and bolt restoration. We are reaching the end of this project and cannot wait to hand the car over to its owners. There are still many small detailed jobs to do before the car is ready to go. With the trimming completed the next step is to fit the hood chromes. These have already been trial fitted and shaped in bare brass to ensure a perfect fit before being sent off the be chromes. We do this delicate work first as if they have to be bent after chroming the chrome can crack. It is vital that the shape of these chromes is just right otherwise it really lets down the finish of the car. With the chromes back and looking stunning the careful work of finally fitting them without damaging the hood can take place. Great care also has to be taken not to damage the hood or the paintwork. If you have followed our updates for some time, you might recognise this rather striking, Primrose Yellow, Series 1.5 E-Type. This car was with us last year for a partial restoration. The car had been stripped and painted elsewhere and then the project ran into problems. After five years off the road, the car arrived with us with a brief of getting it back on the road on a measured budget. We think the finished car has come together rather well and now after a few hundred shakedown miles the car is back with us to have a pre-tour check-over and to have some improvements, upgrades and adjustments made. The main task on this occasion was to give the car a thorough check though and nut and bolt check. This ensures that anything that has settled since the car was completed is adjusted and tightened up. The ride height was checked and the exhaust adjusted up as the owner had found it occasionally touched speed bumps. This is a common issue with E-Types and although we have done our best to improve this, care will still need to be taken.
