Sylvia Plath’s ‘Collected Poems’ featured on the TV show ‘Derry Girls’, season 2, episode 2 “Ms De Brún and the Child of Prague”, which aired on 12 March 2019. I am not sure if this edition is a real one because I have never seen it before, not even on Peter K. Steinberg’s website ‘Sylvia Plath Info’, where he had a gallery of all Plath books. But maybe it was a special one printed in Northern Ireland. Who knows? I like this reference because it doesn’t emphasize the well-known cliché of Plath as the madwoman or the patron saint of troubled teen girls. On the contrary, a new cool and unconventional, almost ‘Dead Poets Society’-like English teacher arrives at the Our Lady Immaculate school in Derry, who inspires the main protagonists to write “great poetry, which is raw and real and messy and glorious and ugly” and “dragged from the depths of the soul” and to find their voice to make a mark. In the scene, where you can see the ‘Collected Poems’, it’s the new teacher Ms De Brún, reading the book. In the end, she turns out to be a bit of a phony, but that doesn’t change the fact that here, Plath’s book symbolizes the kind of poetry the teacher talks about. A very rare reference in popular culture, where Plath is rather an object of admiration instead of ridicule! And if you haven’t watched ‘Derry Girls’ yet, I highly recommend it! It’s so incredibly funny and if you grew up in the early nineties, it’s a nice throwback!
