In February, we partnered with Leach Botanical Garden to provide an educational field trip for a group of students from David Douglas High School. The students conducted a tree point count and searched for native amphibian egg masses in the vernal pond in the Back 5. Planting and removing introduced species along with mulching and trash removal in natural areas increases biodiversity while acting as a buffer for pollution and water runoff for our waterways. Come share in our love for natural areas during the February 14th restoration event in the Back 5 at Leach Botanical Garden. We'll focus on removing weeds to make room for spring flowers. Leach is a great spot for individuals, friends, and organizations to volunteer during the weekday. Wildlife will often visit throughout the event followed by an opportunity to walk through the garden and tree canopy afterwards. The community science programs at JCWC are an opportunity for us to contribute to watershed research through the collaboration of partners and community members. This past weekend, some of the 50 surveyors put on waders and searched one pond in Gresham for amphibian egg masses. This in person training allows time for each volunteer to test their gear and make sure that they are set to head out with their team to one of the multiple ponds we survey in Gresham during February and March. Why are community science programs important to the watershed? We’re able to collect data at a much larger scale! The data is used to guide restoration projects, build data banks, and alert experts to species that may be in our watershed. The JCWC Amphibian Egg Mass Surveys (AEMS) are part of a regional effort that collects data on local amphibian species (Northwestern and Long-toed salamanders; Northern red-legged frog and the Pacific treefrog) that can indicate healthy habitats. The last featured amphibian of our January series is the Northwestern Salamander! This awesome little beast is easy to spot because of its prominent costal ridges that are formed by its ribcage. If you pester it too much, it'll take a defensive pose, secrete poison from its tail and thrash it about! Hey look, it's the Northern red- legged frog! This big friend happens to be the largest native pond- breeding amphibian in the area at 3- 4 inches in size. You can find them throughout the watershed. We're kicking off the new year strong with an amphibian- themed month 🐸 You heard me right: we'll be featuring TWO events and ONE series all based around these neat creatures. 1st: In this month's series, we'll be taking a closer look at Pacific treefrogs, Long-toed salamanders, Northern red-legged frogs and Northwestern salamanders 🦎 2nd: We're teaming up with Katie Holzer, Stormwater Scientist at the City of Gresham, to host a discussion about ongoing amphibian egg mass surveys and the status of amphibian populations in the Portland Metro Area. Integral to many indigenous tribes' sustenance, spirituality and culture in the region, Coho salmon were found along historical Johnson Creek and its tributaries. Today, we witness few Coho in the creek but we know that they're present-- JCWC's eDNA testing tells us that they have left DNA traces in the lower, middle AND upper watershed, wow!
