Srinagar Reports 535 Drug Cases, 894 Arrests Since 2019 Over the past five years, Srinagar has seen a significant rise in drug-related cases, with a total of 535 drug cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, leading to the arrest of 894 people. The District Police Headquarters Srinagar disclosed these figures in response to a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by M M Shuja The year-wise report of cases is as follows: 2019 saw the registration of 81 drug-related cases, resulting in the arrest of 126 individuals. The police seized 201 grams of brown sugar, 15.835 kilograms of charas, and 4,455 bottles of psychotropic syrups. In 2020, the number of registered cases increased to 92, with 159 arrests. Seizures included 20.4 grams of brown sugar, 19.614 kilograms of charas, and 8,526 bottles of psychotropic syrups. The Jammu and Kashmir Police have detained an unspecified number of persons in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency which goes to polls on Monday (May 13) – the first major electoral exercise in the Kashmir Valley following the reading down of Article 370. Campaigning for Srinagar parliamentary constituency, which will go to polls on Monday, May 13, took an aggressive turn on the final day with former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti accusing the J&K administration of using the “machinery of government of India” to sabotage the upcoming elections. Speaking with reporters in Srinagar, an angry Mehbooba claimed that the PDP workers, who are involved in upcoming Lok Sabha election in Kashmir, were “selectively called and detained at police stations” in Poonch and Pulwama districts. “If the Election Commission of India wants to repeat the 1987 (assembly) election (in J&K) and set up a party of Ikhawanis here or their proxies whom they (BJP) support, then why are they enacting this drama (of polling)? Gataru Gang Kingpin, Brother Detained Under PSA in JK Two alleged criminals, including the kingpin of ‘Gataru gang’, were detained under stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Samba district on Saturday, police said. Sumit Jandyal alias “Gataru”and his gangster brother Sourav Gupta, both residents of Vijaypur, have been booked under the administrative law that allows detention without charge or trial for up to two years in some cases.“Both the brothers are involved in criminal activities in an organised manner, thus posing a serious threat to public peace and order,” a police spokesperson said, adding that their gang is involved in various cases including attempt to murder, robbery, breach of peace, extortion, cheating and land grabbing.He said they are notorious criminals and multiple cases stand registered against them at different Police Stations in Samba and Jammu districts. “Following their repeated engagement in criminal activities, detention orders were issued by the District Magistrate Samba based on detailed dossiers prepared by SSP Samba.
