Part 5 of the Swing State Series: Pennsylvania Much like its rustbelt neighbor Michigan, Pennsylvania was a reliably Democrat state for the last 30 years, voting blue in every election following 1988 until 2016, when Donald Trump won it by an incredibly slim margin. In 2020, however, Democrats regained hope as Pennsylvania voted for Joe Biden by 1.2%, and followed that up in 2022 by flipping a red Senate seat blue in addition to flipping the state house blue, and electing Democrat Josh Shapiro to the governorship by double digits. The good news for Donald Trump is that his pseudo-populist platform helps him to outperform establishment Republicans in Pennsylvania, a state with a high population of blue-collar union workers and non-college educated whites. This coalition plays a significant part in Pennsylvania's elections, and shifts within these demographics often reflect trends of the state as a whole. While I think many of these voters will flip back from 2020 and vote for Trump, due in large part to what they see as a floundering economy. Nationwide shifts towards the Democrat Party among suburban voters were less prevalent in Pennsylvania, though they were certainly still present. Ultimately, I believe the suburbs of Philadelphia, in particularly Bucks County, will continue their leftward shift to a degree that counterbalances a rightward shift among working-class voters in Erie County and the Allentown area, allowing Biden to barely hold on to Pennsylvania's 19 electoral votes. Biden also retains enough support from more conservative Democrats because of his everyman persona that he ran on in 2020 to make his margin almost a full point. At this time I predict that the State of Pennsylvania will be won by Joe Biden by a margin of 0.9%. Trump will flip back Erie County, which has been trending right since 2022, but fail to flip Northampton. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has called a video of him doing the rounds on social media, in which he can be seen arguing against the idea of reservations, fake. “A video being circulated on social media says that the Sangh is against reservation. The Sangh offers its full support to all forms of reservations offered by the Constitution. The Sangh reiterates that whoever has been given reservations should continue to have them, as long as societal inequality exists,” Bhagwat said on Sunday (April 29). Without going into the provenance of the video Bhagwat claims in fake, was he right in saying that the Sangh parivar has never stood against reservations? Here’s a list of four times different leaders of the RSS have expressed views contrary to what Bhagwat is now claiming they hold. A user on X, Rahul, first pointed to these instances. 1. Manmohan Vidya, 2017: ‘Reservations should end’ In January 2017, RSS’s the publicity chief Manmohan Vaidya – and currently, according to his X bio, its joint general secretary – said that reservations were introduced in a “different context” and must have “a time limit”. 2. K.N. Govindacharya, 2016: ‘Constitution should not be confined to reservations’ In an interview to The Wire in 2016, RSS ideologue K.N. Govindacharya talked about wanting to create a new framework for the Constitution, specifically saying that while reservation may help to some extent and be important “emotionally”, “we must discuss what more can be done to help people”. 3. M.G. Vaidya, 2015: ‘No need for reservations now’ Speaking to The Hindu in 2015, RSS ideologue M.G. Vaidya said that reservations should be abolished. 4. Modi and home minister Amit Shah are spearheading this false campaign that reservation given to Muslims in Karnataka is religion based and hence unconstitutional and against the social justice values of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. They have also gone to the extent of saying that the Congress party is hell bent on cutting the reservation provided to other OВС and the SC and ST communities and have given it to Muslims. In fact, the reservation given to Muslims in Karnataka or Tamil Nadu or Bihar or Telangana is based on the recommendation of the respective backward class commissions which on careful, empirical and scientific surveys have come to a conclusion that Muslims as a community are socially, economically and educationally backward and hence as a community qualify for the reservations as OBC. This was the considered opinion of the division bench of Karnataka high court in 1979 and also all the backward class commissions including the third backward class commission headed by Justice Chinnappa Reddy. When the decision of the BJP government led by Basavraj Bommai which struck down OBC reservation for Muslims under 2-B category in 2023 was challenged in the Supreme Court Justice B.V. Nagarathna also made it very clear that the reservation for Muslims is not given on the basis of religion but as OBC. The SC bench had also stayed in the Bommai government in order to remove Muslims from the OBC category. The year was 1950. In a newly independent India we were a rowdy bunch of Midnight’s children attending one of the many free Hindi medium primary schools run by missionaries. These schools were still using the text books and guidelines set by the British, and classes were co-educational. Ours housed a few girls and many boys from the local Muslim dominant small town where a few male students from remote rural areas were also visible. They had been sent to stay with relatives and acquire learning and, perchance, some manners for a better future. The children from relatively well-off families like ours came neatly attired in nicer clothes and received a hot lunch in a tiffin carrier brought during the lunch recess by some old family retainer. However, at that point we were all unaware of class and caste and uniformly ill-read and curious to learn about the layered world we lived in. We changed several schools thereafter where the mix remained the same and class room benches always long and few on which we crowded together. One of my bench friends was Mohan, a thin one-eyed boy with pock marks on his face. He had lost his left eye to a pellet as he and his family were running to board the train that saved their lives and brought them from Lahore to Amritsar during the Partition. But why and when did their next door neighbours and families suddenly became a threat to each other and who exactly shot him, this he would not say. His clothes, though old and darned, were clean and his hair well oiled and parted. He was a proud little boy who ate his meagre lunch behind bushes. When he had a bad cough he was given a piece of salted dry roasted ginger to suck. “Does that help ?” we asked sceptically. “Of course,” he replied with conviction and coughed some more. Our classes were predominantly full of poor uncouth first generation learners who wore wrinkled older siblings’ clothes, hoarded their stationary until the pencils and rubbers could be used no more. For the past few years, every time I have travelled overseas, or foreign friends have come calling, they inevitably ask me, “How is it to be Muslim in India?” I, always civil, hesitate. I point out that I am privileged by wealth, position, and generational privilege and cannot speak on behalf of the vast majority who are not. I do not live in a place like Mohammed Akhlaq, where my neighbours would batter in my doors to look for meat in my fridge. I am not a farmer like Pehlu Khan was, to be murdered for transporting cattle on which his livelihood depended. I will never be in the place of Bilkis Bano, to have to plead that her rapists, the murderers of her family, were not deserving of early remission of their sentences because the Gujarat government considered them men of good character. I am not Kashmiri Muslim, to be perpetually denied anything resembling democracy and rights simply because I come from a place where Muslims are a majority community, and this is intolerable to the Indian state. I cannot speak on behalf of these people, cannot appropriate their grievous hurts when I have not suffered as they have. And yet to use that excuse to remain silent is not an option. Even if I am not personally attacked, I see those that are, and it is impossible to ignore the conclusion that this country hates Muslims. What other conclusion can we draw when a man murders and burns alive a construction worker, gets his 14-year-old nephew to shoot a video proudly declaring his actions, and is then considered by a political party as a candidate for national elections? What can we understand from a photographer jumping up and down triumphantly over the corpse of a man shot dead as they dispossessed him from his land? What do we conclude when police officers kick Muslims when they pray, or single them out to murder them in a railway coach? I just finished reading Alex Tunzelmann's Indian Summer about India's journey to independence. It was an eye opener in more ways than one. It cemented some of my views about the origins of India as a country and thoroughly shook some others. While I highlighted several passages as I was reading it, this one pictured below, towards the very end, resonates the most. It seems that the world has come full circle. In a recent election rally in Ghaziabad, Mayawati openly supported the Kshtariya community. Mayawati has, over the years, developed an anti-Thakur image, and between the two upper castes, she gave Brahmins more opportunities in her party. But all that seems to be changing as even the BSP has given five tickets to Thakurs for the elections. After the recent protests by the Rajput – aka Thakur – community on the step-brotherly treatment given to their community by the BJP, many political leaders from Akhilesh Yadav to Mayawati all are embracing the disgruntled community. The reason is quite obvious, as after Muslims and Dalits, the Rajputs are the third largest voter base in western UP. Illustration: Pariplab Chakraborty Ghaziabad, Saharanpur, Meerut, Kairana, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat and Aligarh all have substantial numbers of Rajputs living here, yet Modi has hardly given any tickets to candidates from the community. This miscalculation could very well upset the BJP’s election formula. And if Thakurs turn against the BJP, areas in places ranging from Gujarat to the Bihar-Bengal border could spell trouble for Modi 3.0. There are already reports from Gujarat, Rajasthan and western Uttar Pradesh that Thakurs may become the first chink in Modi’s armour. Constituencies like Allahabad in eastern UP are clearly seeing Thakurs openly supporting a non-Brahmin candidate, as because of the Brahminical hegemony created over the last ten years, little to no development work has been done by the concerned members of parliament. But the Thakurs are not alone. The two other prominent “warrior” classes, the Sikhs and the Jats, both appear to have their own problems with Modi. We begin with Sikhs. Sikhs First of all, Sikhs are spread from Punjab to the Nepal border in UP in concentrated pockets. They have considerable influence economically and a well-oiled social system. In his funeral speech Anthony said that Brutus was a worthy man, whereas other conspirators assassinated Caesar for petty ends, Brutus did so for the common good. The anxiety with which Brutus viewed the popularity of Caesar resonated for times to come. A popular leader can do as he wills to general acclaim and accolades. Institutions are diminished, elected ministers are rendered invisible, and the political public disappears in the shadow of charismatic appeal. What remains is a mob reduced to hysteria by every act of the leader. This was the phenomenon that Shakespeare’s plays are based on writes Stephen Greenblatt in her book Tyrant. Shakespeare’s “plays probe the psychological mechanisms that lead a nation to abandon its ideals and even its self-interest.” Fortunately today, we do not live in ancient Rome where assassination was the only way of removing a leader who is far too popular. We have elections. Elections are significant moments in the biography of democratic nations. Of course democracy is not only about elections. Democracy is of value because it is the only form of government that can secure freedom, equality and justice – the staples of a good society. This is secured by limits placed on power.
